Newborn girl left at Chiba nursery

Police said Thursday that a staff member at a children’s nursery in Futtsu, Chiba Prefecture, found an abandoned newborn girl on the nursery’s front steps.

The girl was found at about 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. She appears to be about 10 days old and was wrapped in a towel, according to media reports. Diapers and a handwritten note were left beside the child.

The note read, “I can’t raise this child. I’d like to come and take her back some day," TV Asahi reported.

Well, it is a good decision, when the only alternative is killing her... It happens from time to time all over Europe. Japan is reach enough to take good care of such orphaned kids...

Elbuda Mexicano, your post is pure speculation. You have absolutely no idea what happened other than this girl leaving her baby at a nursery.

I'm glad she decided to do this rather than throwing her baby into the garbage or toilet like we read so many mornings here on JT. I hope she can get to a point in her life where she's ready to raise a kid properly and go back and get her baby.

What a totally non-selfish and noble act. So many times we read about parents who make the wrong decision, it's nice to read about a parent that made the right one.

I'm glad to see a baby-related story that has hope "attached".

I hope this baby girl gets the love and care all children need, and one day, mother and daughter will reunite...

what a sad day it is when I read a headline saying a baby has been abandoned at a nursery, safe and warm and wrapped up in towels with nappies beside her and think "WONDERFUL NEWS!!! FINALLY!!!! A RELUCTANT PARENT WITH A CONSCIENCE!!!! THANK YOU GOD!!!!"

I hope both mother and baby get the love and support they need and can eventually be reunited.

Very sad story but "One" life saved.

May God bless her with abundance of love, hope and future.

In California mothers may take their babies to a fire or police station and leave them safely and anonymously. There are more than enough couples who would like to adopt. Cannot mothers in Japan do the same?

The Jikei Hospital in Kumamoto has a baby hatch こうのとりのゆりかご (storks'cradle). Mothers can bring their babies and leave them anonymously there. It consists of a door or flap in an outside wall which opens to reveal a soft bed, heated or at least insulated. Sensors in the bed alert carers when a baby has been put in it so that they can come and take care of the child.

As much as it is good news, it is also quite sad! I hope this parent/s can deal with his/her/their grief.

Me too.

Best choice for the baby though.

Can't raise a baby. Don't have a baby.. easy

"I can’t raise this child. I’d like to come and take her back some day,”

Ouch. I hope so too.

I'm just echoing above comments, but at least the parent didn't do the baby any harm.

Though I think Japan does need to better educate people on contraceptives, accidents do happen. It's unfair to judge the mother of this girl without knowing all the facts.

After reading this article, I think the mother actually loves this child. I never heard anyone wanting to get their child back after an abandonment. Maybe there is hope in situation.

Adotion in Japan is very difficult and uncommon, so no.

this is good news, better then having it murdered right? poor mother T.T

Glad it was a nursery and not a coin locker. Thank you, mom, for being considerate enough to leave the child alive despite feeling hopeless about raising it.

After the terrible news of a homeless couple in Seoul who simply hit their onto the ground and killed her, or the news on Yahoo!US about the abandoned baby in a trash can, this is really nice news.

I don't know what has happened to this mother not to be able to raise her child, but it must been really heartbreaking for her.Maybe the Richard she was dating impregnated her and ran away(very probably!!)

And really, Japan has maybe one of the crappiest systems of (total lack of) support for pregnant and mothers in the whole world. It can compete with North Korea and Somalia, seriously!

“I can’t raise this child. I’d like to come and take her back some day,”

Thats going to be the kids decision...not yours

Just glad to hear she took a big step in acknowledging she couldn't care for the child. She did a brave thing considering the alternatives we've read about lately. Now we demonize her for parental rights and her methods for leaving the child. Just glad the child is safe and hopefully the child can forgive her if she comes back into its life.

The 33 comments above reflect love and understanding - so different from the past JT stories about a like situation. Thank you God.

Show me a single person who has said as such. What I HAVE seen people say is that they are thankful the person was considerate enough to have left the baby in a place it can be properly (one would hope) cared for. Would you rather this be yet another 'baby found in toilet' or 'baby found in dumpster' article? Of COURSE it would be better if the mother and father of the baby could keep and care for it, but I'd rather see the end result being this thread than the aforementioned abandonment resulting in a corpse. And I too hope they are reunited some day, and the mother can make amends if and when the time is right. Sad she gave her up, but yes, we can be thankful she gave her up to proper care and not death.

“I can’t raise this child. I’d like to come and take her back some day,” TV Asahi reported."

This means she wants her back when the child is housebroken and smiling politely all the time, just like the little pet children on TV. Many young women, and men, for that matter, have an extremely unrealistic understanding of what it takes to raise a child. They want children because they're cute. Particularly in cultures where families have few children, they have no memory of a baby in the house, no experience looking after a very young child. In Japan, they have only the television, which portrays children as intelligent pets.

Glad she did not kill her. But she lets a baby like she'd bring a brand bag at the pawn shop, in order to get it back later if she gets more cash ? She opposes to adoption in the message. I hope it's legally possible to strip her of parental rights for abandon and give a chance of quick adoption to that baby. There exist ways to let your child in temporary care, but that requires a minimum of formalities : entering the social worker's office, filling one or two forms, showing an ID, giving an address to receive news of the kid. Too much work for her ?

I don't believe for a minute that no-one knows who the mother is.

Surely a hospital knows she had a kid, that 30 women had a kid about 10 days ago, and it's one in 2000 hospitals of Japan... They don't know which one abandoned her baby. The acquaintances that saw her pregnant, she can tell them she had a miscarriage or lost the baby at birth, or that she moves to another town and the baby is at her mother's house, nobody will investigate about it.

Letter shows how much that mother loves her baby... Poor mother and baby... I hope one day they will reunite (Sooner rather than later)...

I like most of the comments also... All these comments shows "Hope is a good thing... May be best of things..." (Copied from some film, I m not sure about the name, 'Shawshank Redemption', may be). (^_^)

Good to see at least the parent made the RIGHT decision instead of dumping the child somewhere to die. Glad to see some of these abandoned children are being put in a place where they can at least be taken care of.

Sorry to say but I agree with Warner. Yes, thank God she didn't hurt or kill the baby but to say, "I want to come take it back"? So when it's all grown up and not crying, puking, crapping you want to come take it back after it's been stuck in the system for how many years, put in homes and moved from one place to the next. Sure they are going to be pleased to see Mummy after that.

This baby was also born 10 days ago. I don't believe for a minute that no-one knows who the mother is. She went through 9 months of pregnancy (agreed some women don't show) gave birth without medical assistance(?) and "looked after" the baby for well over a week. No grandparents, husband/boyfriend/, friends, neighbours? I don't believe it.

sau133: "I don't believe for a minute that no-one knows who the mother is. "

I don't know... you hear some pretty weird cases here about how the mother who killed a baby by leaving her in the toilet was not known, at all by anyone who knew her, to be pregnant.

ELBUDA... Funny how you listed "Poor" countries like Peru and Cambodia... I guess you forgot to add Mexico to that list .... You have NO idea of the circumstances at all... How do you know the guy is scum?... He could be looking for his baby right now!

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

We don't know the circumstances surrounding the mother or parents of this little baby girl. They put her somewhere in plain view, at a busy time where she would be found with a handwritten note. They may be sat somewhere now totally heartbroken and wondering why Fate dealt them these cards. Not everyone's life works out how they plan it.

It would be wonderful if the parent(s) felt that the support they needed to give this little one a nice life was obtainable and they were reunited.

I do not want to sound so negative here right before Christmas and right after Chanukah but if these fools here in Japan and everywhere around the world decided to use CONDOMS, the PILL etc..we could avoid bringing UNWANTED BABIES into this world, but maybe this young lady was raped?? OK, so then go and GET AN ABORTION!! When will people start behaving like real human beings and not like wild animals??

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

For the life of me, I can not understand these stupid people who get pregnant, do not care about using contraceptives, go and have a little baby, bring them into this world, and do?? Dump them at a local nursery. At least she did not hurt or try to kill her baby, I am just guessing it was the mother who felt hopeless and decided to take her baby to this nursery, she may not even have any idea who go her pregnant, and the scum who got her pregnant is out screwing around like a wild animal ready to sweet talk the next stupid girl and then the next unwanted pregnancy! For gods sake, Japan is not some poor country like Peru, Cambodia etc..condoms are sold at any local 7-11!!
