No bonuses for TEPCO employees this year

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) said Thursday it cannot afford to pay employees their bonus this year because of strict cost reductions. The company raised electricity rates costs for large businesses this month and says it may need to do the same for households in the near future.

TEPCO additionally asked employees not directly involved in clean-up of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to take a 20% pay cut.

Give em all a bucketfull of debris and tell em to take it home and have a bbq, in lieu of the bonus.

But, seriously, "asked" them to take a 20% pay cut??? What if they said "No! Shove it where it hurts! Sort out this mess yerselves. we're off!"

Don't employees have mortgages to pay, family to support, mouths to feed?

Meanwhile, generals they sat, as the lines on the map moved from side to side...

Um, they actually can't afford to pay anyone... Thanks taxpayers for paying for everything!

Spread the pain, eh? Tepco employees who had nothing whatsoever to do with Fukushima get hit by this as well. We should think of that before we put up our "screw them all" posts.

1 ( +3 / -3 )

how about putting a few jerks in jail as a bonus!

OH & tepco my winter bills are UP around 40% from the past, jumped from Y9-10,000/mth to around Y14,000 & change, so come clean, rates are already up !

1 ( +1 / -1 )

Was this even considered? Do they have even the basic conception of what is wrong and right? It is an exceedingly valid question. Are we supposed to thank them now for their "sensibility"? God, Tepco understands nothing! They don't even deserve to be paid by tax payers, a company should stand on it's own merits or fall, instead of leeching off of social welfare.

And seeing how Fukushima was not the only coastal nuclear power plant that was hit by the tsunami, but indeed the only one that was lacking in basic safety measures that directly caused nuclear disaster: Yes they should pay for everything out of their own hides for their substandard feodalism and transparent greed. Privatize wins but socialize losses, eh? Tepco, your business models are live and "well" in North Korea, you should return there!

No bonuses for TEPCO employees this year

Ya' think?!!

2 ( +2 / -1 )

How about tepco takes back the bonuses it paid to former executives & CEO's as punishment for their sloppy performance and obstinate attitude towards implementing the safety measures that were recommended.

Then slap the lot of them in prison.

How about tepco pays out on the claims for compensation and damages it has caused, how about nobody pays tepocs planned price increases, how about the govt arrest these former execs & ceo's. How about tepco gets plugged ?

No bonuses for TEPCO?

While my catarrh gently weeps................ Do you guys hear that? I think I hear some cheesy soap-opera violins in the background?

Let's give whatever talent is left a good reason to leave and make it harder for the government to ever see any of it's "investment".

@almostthat "But, seriously, "asked" them to take a 20% pay cut??? What if they said "No! Shove it where it hurts! Sort out this mess yerselves. we're off!""

Yeah, you'd think wouldn't you, but this is JAPAN, and they'll say 'Hai. Wakarimashita', no matter what they really feel, roughtly translating as, 'I've bent over backwards to do my best for the company all these years, of course I'm now willing to bend over forwards for you too, as long as you aren't too inconvenienced'

"Don't employees have mortgages to pay, family to support, mouths to feed?"

Come, come now...where's your kizuna? Share the pain!

No bonuses - obviously that is a given....Asahi TV on one of their programs the other day showed average TEPCO employee salary after the cuts - for a high school graduate employee ( not Uni educated ) - 40 year old earns around 5 million yen a year , 50 year old 7 - 8 million yen and just before retirement their average salary was quoted just over 10 million ...WTF - are we still living in a bubble era?...and the TEPCO boss has the nerve to argue that they have cut their salary expenses as much as they can...Sounds like there is lots more fat that should be cut from TEPCO before the govt . signs off on giving them more of our taxes....wonder what the younger generation Japanese working on hakken contract conditions think about this...

Dont forget the japanese guys on the ground who r sacrificing their own life to stabilize the nuclear reactors, I think they deserve bonuses and more..

That's what I said before and got slammed and thumbed down. Apparently, these guys aren't brave, but made to work there by the mafia...so everybody told me.

DAHHH, the bonuses of all the Tepco bosses should go to the people effeceted and those poor guy's still working at the plant

Maybe Noda et al can donate.

Bonuses? They should all be in prison!

So the ordinary workers are forced to suffer because upper management cut corners and as a result caused this monumental screw up we all now have to deal with. Maybe upper management should take a pay cut instead....

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Upper management should be working for a nominal 100 yen coin..

Spread the pain, eh? Tepco employees who had nothing whatsoever to do with Fukushima get hit by this as well. Actually, I would disagree with that. I am sure plenty of average Joe workers knew that their company was taking short cuts when it came to safety and whatnot and continued to work there anyway.

Dont forget the japanese guys on the ground who r sacrificing their own life to stabilize the nuclear reactors, I think they deserve bonuses and more.. Do you mean the day labourers that were hired by yaks from places like Osaka to do the dirty work because many average TEPCO workers refused or quit? They aren't TEPCO employees. They are hired by dispatch - and wouldn't get bonuses anyway.

Yes, there are some average workers who are getting "screwed" but hey, aren't bonuses supposed to be given for excellent work and when the company is doing well? Don't "boo hoo" me about this when they have clearly been overpaid, overcharging and have ruined the country's food supply and land.

While I understand everyone's sympathy and saying "Yeah good thing, tepco should pay". Mind you the workers at TEPCO, not the management but the people who are working everyday to keep the plant stable (even if things got messed up) are giving their lives working in radioactive conditions to keep the plant safe. While the management (probably) is playing golf somewhere. And you think its OK for the employees not to receive any compensation for their dangerous work? I find that a bit unfair.

management too? stockholders too?

They should all get a 10 pack of vinyl tape.

They should all get a 10 pack of vinyl tape.

Beat me to it. Good one.

Can just see the memo informing everyone of the no raises due to a blow out in TEPCO's stationary budget in particular tape and plastic bags....

My home electric bill went down ¥1700 from last bill to the one I got last week. If I can do it, so can you.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I don't want to hear a thing about employees being punished with so much as a slap on the wrist until the actual people responsible for this mess, those who cut corners and ignored relevant earthquake and tsunami data, are warming the commode in a jail cell!

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Elsewhere it was reported that exec will take a mere 25 per cent pay cut. I guess they will just have to keep driving their BMW from last year this year too. How embarrassing! Might also have to cut golf trips from the 8 planned this year to 6. Bummer!

I'm glad somebody else noticed this. My bills are up about 40% already on last year, and that's with the house empty in daylight hours. Something's been sneaked through already, before the "official" price hike.

And you think its OK for the employees not to receive any compensation for their dangerous work? I find that a bit unfair.

They're getting a pay check. That is more than what some others can say who lost their job due to TEPCO. Look, not all the guys knew what was going on but in many cases, the average Joe was well aware that safety standards were not being met - and looked the other way while getting their salary and bonuses from years before. If they didn't know, they had no business being in certain jobs. Indeed, I feel for some of them but based on the postings of salaries and lack of qualifications, I don't feel that sorry.

What about danger money ?
