About 3.85 million people studied Japanese at a record 18,604 institutions overseas in fiscal 2018, with the number of institutions soaring in Asia, according to a survey released this week.

I wonder if all 18,604 institutions have "native" and "qualified" JTL's assisting the foreign "JTEs" in their classrooms?

When many people are learning your language and you make little effort to learn theirs, you are at a disadvantage.

No. of Japanese language institutions soars in Asia: survey

the number of people studying Japanese dropped in South Korea and Taiwan.

Really, whole asia?

The number of Japanese language institutions jumped 3.7-fold to 818 in Vietnam from the previous survey in fiscal 2015 and nearly tripled to 400 in Myanmar, said the survey by the Japan Foundation, a government-backed organization conducting international cultural exchange programs.

But they just don't mention what are driven factors for this, it's not because people just becoming attracted to Japan without any reason. By seeing countries where sudden increase happen, it's more because new labor working visa category that introduced last year.

Very good news indeed. Although that official did NOT mention anything about the S.Korea-Japan tensions as one of the reasons why Japanese language learning is going down in S.Korea. Of course, we all know the reason why that is, unfortunately.

This is how JGov will get around imigration, "they are not imigrants they are students."

The appeal of learning 1 $/hr in their home Country vs 10 $/hr in Japan would at first sight seem attractive, until the actual cost of living here is taken into account which somewhat nixes that, unless you're under the influence of some Criminal organisation.
