The beach shown in the photo, Tumon, is inside a barrier reef. In spite of what the photo show, the water is silty and stagnant and devoid of sea life. The hotels are poorly run, there are nothing but bad American and Japanese restaurants and there are frequent brownouts. Other than that, Guam is glorious!

I'm more scared to be in Japan than Guam when it comes to missile strikes from NK. We're a hell of a lot closer and a much larger target.

Also Guam isn't necessarily an easy target to hit. It's pretty far and NK hasn't proven long distance pinpoint precision yet.

I was just there last year, and took loads of photos of beautiful fish swimming around right off the beach near the Westin. The water was beautiful.

Japanese taxpayers should get a free trip to Guam, considering the $1 million per person they’re paying to move some marines from Japan to Guam.

You don’t see anyone frolicking in the water because it’s usually off limits from the pollution alerts.

I really disliked it when I went there once. Worst ripoff by hotels, shops, restaurants and golf courses - lousy service at exorbitant prices. I vowed to never return. I wouldn’t even go if someone paid me. No wonder the US military people don’t want to be moved there from Japan.

Yes, Guam has steadily become a bit of a dump.  And younger Japanese tourists becoming more adventurous.  Hence the drop in visitors.

Love Guam, don't think it's a dump at all, however I do agree the prices overall were totally outrageous and they could draw more tourists to the island if they would lower their prices, as of now travel to Guam is pretty reasonable, love the food, you can get flights for about $500 at the lower end. If you want to relax, Guam is a great place to do so, if you want to shop then Hawaii would be better, depends on what you like.

Have add a couple wonderful holidays with the family in Guam. It's not an A-level destination by any measure but it serves its purpose. Good luck to all of Micronesia through this tough time.

I would have no qualm about visiting Guam. People are too sensitive/fearful these days. Geez.

I stayed a few days there, and it was nothing like you describe. A very pleasant beach, if a bit pebbly.

Silly not to go because of NK fears, especially considering Japan is also on the target list. There may be other reasons. Every time I consider going to Guam, the prices are simply too high for what they offer. I can go to a number of great Southeast Asian resorts for less. Hawaii isn't even that much more. The one advantage Guam has is that it's close and easy, with decent weather and beaches. Good enough, but the package tour prices are ridiculously high.

Those people that are saying it’s too expensive? Well I guess you either bought your ticket/tour packages from a rip-off agent or living under a rock!

The tour packages of course fluctuates depending on the season.

I guess a typical 4-day trip to Guam that costs ¥30,000–¥40,000 which includes airfares and hotel accommodations to you people that’s whining is either getting paid less than minimum wage or simply DO NOT KNOW how to shop around? SMH

My sister lived in Guam for several years and I visited her often. She lived in a house that was part of Leo Palace Resort. While the food is so-so and expensive (thanks to the Jones Act), the people are nice, golf amazing, and the diving fabulous. I find it hard to believe that Mr. Kim will (or would) target Guam, despite his inflammatory statements. Guam is the largest military base in the Pacific, I would assume that it is protected with a THAAD system, whether we know it or not. Any attack on Guam would evoke an overwhelming response from the USA. I would go on holiday in Guam tomorrow (especially to escape the freezing cold of NYC)!

Japanese are more often than not incredibly fickle when it comes to perceived dangers, unless they are at home. Japan is in FAR more danger from NK than Guam. Same happens if a bomb goes off somewhere or there's a natural disaster, you see tours cancelled like cancelling were going out of style even though the chances of them running into the same thing are the same or higher at home (maybe not bombs, but definitely disasters).

In any case, hope they choose to go somewhere with a bit more culture instead. No offense, but going somewhere just to shop duty free or where there are other Japanese is no different than going to Okinawa or another beach place come summer.
