A restaurant at the Tokyo Prince Hotel in Minato Ward has been ordered closed from Friday to Sunday by health officials after an outbreak of norovirus caused by food poisoning.
According to TV Asahi, 76 members of a tour group that stayed at the hotel on Dec 12 and 13, became ill after eating at the Porto buffet restaurant. The tourists suffered vomiting and diarrhea.
Meanwhile, Tokyo government health officials said there were 12 cases of food poisoning in restaurants in December.

It's a buffet ....it might not have even been the food. The staff weren't reported to have been sick, could have been someone who handled a utensil that was carrying this virus. Someone who may have not even worked at this Hotel and was a paying customer ....

Not necessarily. You can be infected and infectious before any symptoms show.
Sympathies to all those affected. A very nasty start to the New Year.

according to : http://www.cdc.gov/features/norovirus/
"You may hear norovirus illness called "food poisoning" or "stomach flu." It is true that food poisoning can be caused by noroviruses. But, other germs and chemicals can also cause food poisoning. Norovirus illness is not related to the flu (influenza), which is a respiratory illness caused by influenza virus."

That hotel seriously needs to be brought into the 21st century--Prince Hotels built a luxurious, modern tower just a few blocks away but has allowed this former flagship to languish, and it shows in the facilities and the food service practices.

Minato ward?? If this Noro virus can hit in Minato we are screwed! Then it is only a matter of time before all hell breaks loose here in Tokyo!!

A former colleague came over to do a job here about 10 or 11 years ago and got food poisoning at that place. He also experienced a typhoon and a sizeable earthquake during the week he was here. He was never keen to come back again.

I wouldnt call the noro virus "food poisoning" None the less someone must have forced themselves to go to work dispite vomiting and dia-leea.

Norovirus is not food poisoning.
