Although the honor of being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom is late in coming, I am thrilled to hear that Minoru Yasui will finally gain some much deserved recognition.
Like the article mentions the timing is ironic given rhetoric by certain political candidates about Syrian refugees and America's Muslim population that is very reminiscent of rhetoric/actions in America during refugee crisis before WWII and the internment of Japanese Americans.
Anyway, congratulations to the Yasui family. Here is a link to a segment profiling Minoru Yasui produced in 1983: https://vimeo.com/38271249
Also, his daughter's name is Laurie Yasui, not "Laupie" Yasui as indicated in the photo caption.

Sadly this matter is not the same as with WWII with the same concerns.
My grandfather too was interned. That is of another matter.
The issue is terrorism where the enemy is not easily identifiable and not a war where the enemy is identified.
The problem is that today, with advancement in technology, communication, transportation and otherwise everything we can think of, the "threat" is far, far greater than one can imagine and could have imagined during WWII.
The biggest threat is the psychology of the US population itself, now fanned by religious and racial prejudice along with economic, safety and security issues.

Regarding 11% where japanese will defend their country, i believe japanese american are more patriotic to america and put more efforts to protect allies. Its how their culture exposed during americanisation. Sadly muslims in american does not shown any sign of patriotism since 9/11 unlike japanese american.

Are you kidding? There are thousands and thousands and thousands of American Muslims in the American military.
Where did you ever come up with the ridiculous comment above? Are you living in the Republican bubble or something?

In 6 yrs, I only knew 2 american muslims in the US military. . . and worked actively with all four branches.
Those are words dont seem to interact well- muslims,US Military, in . . . And it makes me cringe when I think about that "muslim" army major (fort Hood, TX) who killed 13 and wounded about 30 others.
. . . Guess he slipped the background checks. And he left all his religious secrets out of his "then" current Sevice Record Book.

In my six years in the navy, I only met a few followers of Islam as well. The difference is that I don't think my experience represents the national average in the military.
So are you saying one nut's actions justifies denying an entire class of refugees from admittance? How is this way of thinking different from what happened to Japanese Americans back in WWII? Just last year there was ANOTHER mass shooting at Fort Hood. Four dead including the shooter (self-inflicted gunshot) and 14 others wounded. The shooter was Catholic so we need to bar all Catholics from the country, right?
