The Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectural governments said Sunday that more than 34.12 million yen was collected from Mount Fuji climbers between July 25 and Aug 3.
The 1,000-yen voluntary donation system was implemented this year for 10 days on a trial basis. It is expected to go into effect next year for the whole climbing season from July 1 to Aug 31.
The money is to be used to help preserve the area’s natural beauty. The 3,776-meter mountain has become increasingly popular with climbers since it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in June.
Officials of the two prefectural governments said donations were collected from 34,327 climbers, Fuji TV reported. Collection boxes were set up at four trails on the iconic mountain.

With how famous the mountain is and the short time frame of the climbing season it's not that suprising that this amount was collected in just ten days.

Yea, remember that and not spend the money on a bridge to no where.

More money to line the pockets of politicians. Next year, I think I'll head out there just to see if anything has really improved.

Now, just where is that money going? I want to know.

That's pretty impressive. Hope they use it wisely to pick up all of the rubbish people throw on the mountain.

Note to author: More than Y34.12 mil yen..., not "over Y34.12 mil yen."

207 people did not pay ;) And 3500 people a day? Even less tempted to climb now.

I wouldn't give them jack! But then again, I wouldn't be climbing up an active volcano either so...

Wow guys! Unlike the US this money actually goes to what it is intended for. Jaapnese people are very specific in their plans and usually don't waste anything.

@jason wow you clearly dont know much about Japan, just reseach how much money has been diverted from the Tsunami/earthquake funding and what it was used for and ill think youll change your mind.

The Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectural governments should not step on the same rut with the government making sure there is transparency by all means how the money will be spent.

Hope it's actually used there. From what I hear the lodge there is no picnic.

In my opinion people should learn to pick up their own trash (at least that's the way I was brought up...)

It's quiet facinating how they can coolect money that way, but the questions is are they realy going to use them for nature preservance, althogh what can be made to make it more greater then now? I want to know youre opinion.
