Pair sustain minor injuries after tumble down Ginza subway escalator

Two people bumped into each other while on an escalator at Tokyo Metro's Ginza station on Tuesday night, causing them both to tumble down and sustain minor injuries.

The accident happened at around 8 p.m. when a 51-year-old man lost his balance while on an escalator heading down toward the Hibiya line platform. He bumped into a 42-year-old woman in front of him, and they both tumbled down the stairs, tripping two women on the way. The pair sustained minor injuries to their face and back, while the other two women were uninjured.

Police said the man who tripped may have been inebriated.

Bonus season bingo!!! Watch out for the sidewalk pizza, too.

This isn't really news as I see this kind of poor behaviour every day - i.e. people not paying attention to others around them while walking.

LOLOLOLOL!! This whole story is news? And the keystones can anly speculate that the man who tripped, "MAY" have been drunk? Wow, they can't even figure that out...amazing!!

Japanese people seem to have no spacial awareness, people bump into one another so much.

The police don't even know if the guy was drunk??? And they give these guys guns.

Ugh, drunk people. Sigh.

slow news day, huh?

Japanese people seem to have no spacial awareness,

I totally agree. I was in Osaka once when some inebriated person threw up all over the pavement. I was shell shocked when people were walking through the regurgitated matter, they did not see it!! I lost my cool and burst out laughing when one well dressed young man fell smack dab in the middle of it lol

Although this may not be news, I have never seen anybody actually fall down an escalator...

Good thing there weren't so much people behind him. Or else you would see people toppling down like dominos!

Um, where I live now (overseas), people here walk like headless chickens too, it's not just a Japan thing.

Neither do they stand to one side on escalators or move aside in elevators...

He was probably concentrating on his cell phone. Yesterday I saw a girl on the street trip and fall flat on her face. She got back on her feet and continued walking, never taking her eyes off the phone.

There you go, we all know the keystones are always shameless and useless.

Wouldn't 'crashed into' be more apt than 'bumped'?

Anyway, that the guy was probably drunk doesn't surprise me in the least.

Police said the man who tripped may have been inebriated. Means pizzed! Hard up for news? Or what! JT?

Oh my! This is terrible news. They need to start putting these drunk salary men in jail and throw away the key. How much more of this are we supposed to take!

Someone fell down from escalator...got hurt and this is news? I slipped on the pathway yesterday, should have called reporters I guess!

Why don't they know for sure?

must have been a slow news day yesterday - and my first thoughts after reading the headline was someone must have been drunk...

good job the escalators down to the hibiya line at ginza are short or he might have taken more out.

You know, when I was 16 I could understand the teens who were falling down drunk or throwing up from too much alcohol. But in Japan you get 50 year old senior managers in Armani suits conducting the same behavior.

And yet how often do you hear the world "alcoholic" used to describe these people? Japan's alcohol culture is dreadful.

He would have been drunk and beat up if it'd been me he made tumble!

Drunk man rushing for a train runs over women - is this news? You can see this every night at any large station.

Heh ... reminds me of the drunk salariman I saw at Meguro station last week. He looked very weary as, head down, he walked UP the down escalator. In the 5 minutes I was waiting for the train, he managed to keep a geo-stationary position about halfway up (or maybe down) the escalator. For all I know, he's still there ...

No guns, sex, violence, politics, runaway vehicles, or drugs.

A drunk on an escalator. Is this minimalism?

I echo the other posters: this is news?

A few years ago, some imbecile sprinting up a stairwell on the wrong side came barrelling up around a blind corner and ran straight into me, throwing me to the ground and breaking my ankle. Not only did I not make the newspapers, but the train officials wouldn't even look at security cameras or station someone in that spot to try to find the guy. And I was left on crutches for 8 weeks!

How did these two manage to get media attention, anyway?

I can think of some tube stations in London (Gloucester Road for example) where had this happened we would be reading about fatalities but this? This just isn’t news. Maybe it’s just put up to generate some Japan bashing, stupid drunk, stupid police, poor woman. Minimalist ingredients needed for showing how silly the Japanese can be without reference to any other country as that would be off topic. Granted this might make the real news a few months from now should the woman decide to sue the drunk and JR for her injuries, but then she’s Japanese so probably not.

A drunk guy falls down the stairs and it's national news?

This is like America's funniest home videos, only in newspaper format. Slow news day?

There, but for the grace of God, go I.

thats why you shouldn't walk on the escalator, hold on to the handrail and just stand!! Escalators were never designed to be walked up and down on, hence the large steps. Most escalators actually have signs on them to tell you not to walk on them. In fact your not even supposed to stand on one side of the escalator, you should always stand dead centre becuase of balance issues. Ever thought about how much manufacturing precision & technology needs to go into these escalators when you just know one side of the it might need to handle a few tons on weight imbalance. Imagine an aeroplane with everyone seated on one side...
