be prepared to hear about this birth for months!

Some people might not know, these pandas are on loan (at a fee, of course) to Japan and any offspring born to pandas on loan become the property of China. They are usually returned to China at the age of around 4 years old and are then put into the breeding population there. Up to now, about 11 pandas have been born overseas and returned to China.

I heard on the news that they need to return the baby panda in around 2 years. I hope China will let us keep him/her for a while longer.

marcellito: He'd definitely give up a Chinese baby born to two human parents though! haha.
Seriously... glad the panda seems okay, and mother too, and hope they bring a lot of pleasure to people until the baby is returned.

It's quite the business...zoos must pay the Chinese government $1,000,000 rent annually for each panda (plus a one-time $600,000 "baby tax" if a cub born, the return of which can be demanded by China after 2 years). All the pandas always remain the property of the Chinese government. Of course, pandas generate a lot of money for the zoos concerned, but some in the US have complained they are losing money on the deal.

Aha! El osito panda! We had baby pandas in Mexico City being born left and right! Even with the horrible smog, etc..so my guess if Mexico can do it, these pandas in Ueno can do it too!

What a lovely piece of news to wake up to this morning. Happy birthday !

It is said that the new panda will be shown to the public in about six months. Can't wait to see it. Saw its parents, and they were the biggest pandas I have ever seen ... thus the name "giant". It is hoped that the mama & papa will be producing another cub in a year or two. Like the zoo in Wakayama Prefecture, where 12 pandas have been born since about 2000, hope the pair at Ueno will be just as active ... er, productive.

By the way, there are people inside of China who will be angry if you call these pandas Chinese, because they say, they are from TIBET, and the good people of occupied Tibet think it is a TIBETAN panda, not Chinese, but those who are making all the $$$$ from these pandas, is BEIJING and not Tibet.

DISTRIBUTION Pandas are found only in western China, along the eastern edge of the Tibetan plateau. Although they were once more widespread, today they are limited to six small areas in Sichuan, Gansu, and Shaanxi provinces, totaling only 14,000 square kilometers (5,400 square miles).

What is the attraction of these animals? Even pandas are so bored with pandas that they can't be bothered to breed with any regularity.
