A 36-year-old man, his 36-year-old wife and their six-month-old son were killed after their car crashed into a garbage truck in Hanno, Saitama Prefecture, police said Sunday.

According to police, the accident occurred at around 4:50 p.m. on Saturday.  Police said the driver of the car, Ryo Shiono, his wife Mariko and their infant son Ryu were killed in the crash. The 43-year-old driver of the garbage truck suffered a neck injury.

Police said street surveillance camera footage showed the car drift across the center line into the path of the garbage truck.

Police said visibility was good at the time and added they are trying to determine why the car crossed the center line.

I live nearby where this happened. They were in a k car and the car was so smashed up! Window smashed in. Heart wrenching! Mother and baby in the back seat. My husband said she was probably holding the baby either feeding or sleeping. Maybe in a car seat the baby would have survived. The Japanese news did not mention a car seat or not tho. The truck was pretty smashed up too. I can only hope mom and baby were asleep and didn’t feel anything. I drove a k car for 10 years. I was on the highway for work 3 days a week doing 90kms a day. My friends begged me to use a safer car, which I have been doing since 2005.

There's nothing in the brief article to say they would have survived the crash if they were in a more substantial car. However, K-cars are death traps in an accident. There are many possible scenarios as to why the car crossed the center line. It could be something as simple as dozing off or it may be something more sinister like murder/suicide. I'd probably speculate the driver was distracted by his phone. We will most likely never know for sure.

Perhaps the driver fell asleep

Car seat? I'm guessing distraction caused them to swerve into the wrong lane.

I am wondering what car were they in? was it a K car? or was it a bit more substantial like a full size saloon? it seams odd that the lorry drive only has a sprained neck, yet they were all sadly killed.

What a tragedy! I don't know about the rest of Japan but here in Kobe the garbage truck drive like loons, could be a contributing factor, rip.
