Police said Friday that a 39-year-old man sustained serious injuries after he jumped out the window of a train on the Odakyu Odawara line in Kawasaki, Kanagawa prefecture, on Thursday night.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 9 p.m. while the train was between Ikuta and Mukogaoka-yuen stations. NTV reported that other passengers saw the man open a window and jump out. He was found collapsed in the car park of an apartment block about 50 meters away.

Police said the man was taken to hospital with severe injuries to his head and other parts of his body.

Odakyuu Odawara train line officials said the incident caused services to be suspended for 30 minutes.

Police said a woman commuter told them she yelled at the man for touching her and that they plan to question him as soon as he recovers from his injuries.

Equating dating with molestation, as has been happening on this thread, reflects an immature or unhealthy attitude to women.

Discussing pickup tactics when the article is about a man who jumped out of a window after allegedly groping a woman reflects an immature or unhealthy attitude to women.

Trying to connect 2 things which are unconnected reflects an immature or unhealthy attitude to women. because normal, healthy men do not think it's ok to touch a woman they do not know.

Having a sex drive is not an excuse for this behaviour, and it is simply appalling to even suggest the excuse that men are "driven" to molest a stranger because they feel horny and are single.

Find a hobby (preferably an active one where you expend physical energy), join a club, observe normal social behaviour and learn from it. Try to start up and maintain a healthy non-aggressive relationship with someone you like and get on with. If it becomes physical, great, but until such time, your hand is your friend - keep it to yourself, and do not reach out to strangers.

Sexual harassment and molestation is repellent and inexcusable behaviour.

Let's just agree this guy is an idiot. A ピ-マン person, a guy with nothing in his head.

Strangerland, if the choice is to run through ticket gates and out of a busy station or to jump out of the window of a moving train and potentially die I'd choose the first option.

Well, he either wanted to commit suicide, or he thought he wasn't going to die.

I've never seen a train in Japan with windows you can open.

There are lots of them, usually the window is a small one at the top though. But if you get out of the big city, even the big windows will sometimes open.

If what everyone is suggesting is correct, that he perved up some bird and got busted, why didn't the bloke just wait until the next station and run?

Where? Past all the cameras at the ticket gates and on the platform? The risk is still big. And he may have just panicked. Or he may be guilty. Unfortunately it's hard to know the difference because of the biased system.

Getting a number is one thing. So is getting one date. Getting all the way is quite another.

This is the same with meeting girls anywhere, not just on trains.

And you don't see very many guys trying pick up on the train because it overwhelmingly does not work

This also is the same for anywhere.

Pickups on the train can and do happen.

Getting a number is one thing. So is getting one date. Getting all the way is quite another. Its a desperate world for a reason. Meeting women is never easy except for a small set of guys with exceptional talents. And that is why women get molested on the train. You don't find guys with girls to spare doing this. And you don't see very many guys trying pick up on the train because it overwhelmingly does not work, not for first base and even more if you have any intention of getting to second base.

Pickups on the train can and do happen. But, you have to be willing to be shot down, because it can and will happen more often than success, and you also have to have a good game, or you won't have any success. But if you are the type of guy that can talk to girls in other locations and get their number or arrange a date, you will find success on the train as well. If you are not that type of guy, you'd be better off avoiding train pickups.

OBVIOUSLY you two never bothered asking a girl if she would like to go have a drink. It WORKS. TRY it sometime.

WA4TKG, I have asked. It worked on girls I knew. It did not work on girls I didn't. There is no way it would work on a strange girl on the train except once in blue moon, with a girl I would most likely later regret getting involved with.

Groping someone is not a misguided come-on, there is no comparison.

Maria, you seem to have more wires crossed than I can count. The man was not suggesting one flip a coin and chose to either grope or ask for a drink. He was saying DON'T grope EVER, cause its WRONG. Instead, ask out for a drink, because talking to people and setting up a mutual situation is RIGHT, ALWAYS.

I salute that nobility as much as I feel the need to point out that the success rate is going to be very low and the act subject to possible misinterpretation (cough) in these ever more paranoid and unfriendly times.

Luckiest sob this week, he should go out and buy a lotto ticket. Now, that doesn't change the fact that he is a complete idiot.

Yeah, jumping out of a moving train is pretty desperate. But asking a girl out? Worst she can say is "no." In this case she was probably yelling for the police. Bit of a difference.

Sorry, this guy sounds like a real idiot fool! If this guy was so innocent, why in the heck would he do something so stupid at to jump out of the window of a MOVING TRAIN!! This guy either was a pervert and felt up the woman or he was just insane, or all of the above, IMHO.

why didn't he just ask her out for a DRINK ??!!!

You're comparing molestation with a clumsy chatup line? No, that is wrong. You are wrong. They are not similar at all.

If the guy had sidled up to her and said, "Next stop must be heaven, because I can see an angel", you can then ask, Why didn't he say whatever line.

But if he in fact groped her, the only thing to ask is, Why didn't he keep his perverted, law-breaking hands to himself?

Groping someone is not a misguided come-on, there is no comparison.

To be specific, certain offenses in Japan such as shoplifting and molesting, by law, can only be convictable if they are caught during the incidence of the crime, "genko han".

0 ( +0 / -0 )

innocent people don't run away or jump out of moving trains.

In Japan they do. It's widely known amongst Japanese men that if you are wrongly accused of groping, you should run, as once they have you in custody the conviction rate is near 100%. If the person runs, they can break the chain of custody (between groping and arrest), making it harder to secure a conviction.

See the movie それでも僕はやってない (sore demo boku ha yattenai - Even so, I didn't do it). It's a movie about a guy who wouldn't agree to having groped a woman, and even when they proved he couldn't have done it due to his location, he was still convicted. It's fiction, but this happens in real life all the time in Japan.

why didn't he just ask her out for a DRINK ??!!!

Because that does not work either. You can't just hit a woman up for a drink on the train and get anywhere. If it was remotely that easy this would never happen, plus we would see guys doing this all the time...but we don't. In fact it would just be taking your chances with a different type of sexual harassment charge.

As it seems common in Japan these days to over-react to isolated incidents, I predict the freedom and convenience and SAFETY of being able to open train windows will soon be a thing of the past.

Same thing happened with knives. A couple of incidents and the length you could have got shorter and shorter. Same thing happened with the DUI tolerance since that idiot knocked the car full of kids over a bridge. Reactionary is the word of the day. Good bye windows. You will be replaced by heat stroke this summer.

I like to think that this man freaked out because he was about to get his life destroyed, because this woman thought she was touched by him.
