Now this is Americans has 'apology' for their 'candlestine plot' that lure japanese attacks on Pearl harbour! Sure Roosevelt and Churchill knew the Japanese raid on Pearl harbour!

True. So that makes it all good l guess.

No. It makes it COMPLETELY different, and while not good, MUCH better. In other words a tea ceremony sans official government apology is good enough for Pearl Harbor, but a BBQ hosted by Americans for Hiroshima and Nagasaki would not be good enough without the apology.

Given that there was a large military presence in Hiroshima it was an important target what more warning does one need.

So if a column of troops were marching next a church full of worshippers, you would go ahead and blow up the church too? If a soldier were standing behind a pregnant woman, I guess you would just right through her to get to that soldier?

My guess is that your tune would change considerably if it were a city in your country. There are a pair of shoes, and you should try walking a mile in them.

Come on it is tea, i garee women like making it but it is simple. Get boiling hot water put in a warmed teapot with PG Tips tea bags, wait a few minutes, stir the pot and pour into CPFC mugs, add milk and sugar if need be. All this mucking about over tea, people have too much time on their hands.

Whipping up some green powder and spinning a bowl and showing what the tools look like is a no brainer.

It's not just what you do, it's also how you do it (and there's no bowl-spinning involved - we leave that to the third-rate variety acts of the 1970s!) There's an elegance to it when done right and the utensils are works of art in themselves. Tea ceremony can get along just fine without those who are unable to appreciate it, though.

I hope they will not be using Tea from Shizuoka or Kanagawa!

The best matcha comes from Uji, near Kyoto, so highly unlikely it would come from anywhere near the above areas.

Perhaps you forget that United Sataes and Japan had been friends before the war. Indeed we were allies in the first world war. You may also not be aware that a third of the population of Hawaii are Japanese descendants (not unlike the English in New England). Methinks you are watching more movies than history classes. One thing the article doesn't mention is that this coincides with the Park Service's unveiling of it's new visitor center that contains a more balanced view of the events that occurred at Pearl Harbor. So now you may also begin to appreciate the value of peace and humanity.

chewitup,

This is like saying the Japanese have had months since March 11th to leave Japan and escape the nuclear crisis. Where would you like them to go? How long will it take for everyone to get out?

Little bit different there.

You honestly think a city of that size can just be evacuated on short notice?

Who's talking short notice? Given that (in Hiroshima) they had already evacuated a lot of the kids. Given that there was a large military presence in Hiroshima it was an important target what more warning does one need. Oh we are at war our cities are being destroyed and lm in a city with an important military target. We will be right they wont bomb us!!

Pearl Harbor was at least a military target full of ARMED military personnel whose job it was to defend the country, and they were caught with their pants down.

True. So that makes it all good l guess.

At the end of the day at least both parties now have the ability and understanding to sit down and do this token gesture of good will.

But as for Hiroshima and Nagasaki they where warned

This is like saying the Japanese have had months since March 11th to leave Japan and escape the nuclear crisis. Where would you like them to go? How long will it take for everyone to get out? You honestly think a city of that size can just be evacuated on short notice? Nagasaki was chosen because the primary target of Kokura was obscured by clouds. I suppose babies should have crawled out of the cribs and into the next city because "they were warned" they were the secondary target? Might as well draw a gun and give you three seconds to clear out before I blow you to hell and then declare "he had is chance!"

Pearl Harbor was at least a military target full of ARMED military personnel whose job it was to defend the country, and they were caught with their pants down. Deemed impossible, some say it was the result of an inside job. A tea ceremony is a nice gesture for that I suppose although I have about as much respect for it as I do any other leisurely past time of the rich, such as kabuki. But comparing Pearl Harbor with atomic bombings of civilians is a form of mental yoga that rips limbs from sockets and makes them fly into outer space. It is willful and it is asinine and it is insane.

I think in terms of America's perceptions of Japan, the tide really turned way back in 2005 when "The Last Samurai" came out. It was a Hollywood film that glorified bushido, the way of the warrior. An American movie with that kind of message would have been unthinkable in even the 1980s. A tea ceremony at the Pearl Harbor Memorial is peaceful and more touchy-feely than bushido at least.

The sad part for the Americans is even if war was declared the day before, the Americans would still have been caught by surprise. It might have been even worse for them If 1/2 the Battleships would of been at sea, critical infrastructure would of been destroyed instead. The thing we must remember is neither country is the same. We have both evolved and are now friends. It is my hope we will remain friends. This ceremony is a very good thing. I put my hand out in friendship to my American friends.

tea lovely. oh why were the Americans there in the first place? racism, etc, I forgot..maybe something a the military memorial should have something round here somewhere to remind me...ah maybe there is forgiveness or forgetfulness afterall, something in the water, enjoy the tea.

A tea ceremony in Pearl Harbor? Why? I like the tea ceremony, but done in memorial of WW2?! It bears no meaning to it.

You are entitled to your own opinion, pal. But I do not live in the past I cannot change. I simply enjoy the present moment and for the future.

FireyRei,

P.S. The Japanese did a great job, tactically speaking at Pearl Harbour, showing just how naive the Americans were. At least the Americans had a fighting chance, which cannot be said for those in Hiroshima & Nagasaki.

Agreed the Japanese did do a good job of catching people off guard. But as Adm Yamamoto predicted the Japanese won for the first months but ultimately paid the price for their actions.

But as for Hiroshima and Nagasaki they where warned and really whether it was one bomb or thousands the result really was the same lots of death. To say they had no chance isnt true they could have evacuated, they could have fought back given the military presence in the areas.

Americans expecting apologies should look to their own leadership of that time.

Last fall, I was invited to enjoy the Japan Tea Ceremony held at Japanese tea house of botanic garden, sponsored by local Japanese Consulate . Four American tea masters in black kimono served the tea to us. It was so peaceful and beautiful that was surrounded by golden colored aspen trees, koi pond and fall flowers.

They gave us a lecture of 3 principals of tea ceremony; peace, tranquility and harmony.

Let's welcome the ceremony. There's nothing we can change for all the mistakes in history. Let's learn to respect each other and simply enjoy the tea. We need be more open and progressive for the future. Peace.

This article is about the Tea ceremony. Why so off topic? Tea Ceremony is suppose to be peaceful, but in my opinion, it is set up like a Japanese corporation or govt organization. Just like the same people stay in power in the govt. the so called living treasures with no real talent just keep stepping in and on and in and on. Boring. Whipping up some green powder and spinning a bowl and showing what the tools look like is a no brainer. This ceremony and other living treasure schitc is beyond my comprehension.

Speaking as an American, I welcome the ceremony and wish peace to all who take part in it.

I think the Japanese government realizes now that you don't slack off on safety when it comes to nuclear, that's for sure.

Don't be so naive. This is not the first incident of nuclear slackness by the Japanese. An why place blame on the IAEA? They've warned Japan in the past that more transparency by the officials regulating the industry in Japan. And Japan responded by cheerfully ignoring the advice. Typical.

The day is fast approaching when the USA and Japan will need to sit down and truly seek reconciliation surrounding the events of WWII. The killing of innocent people on both sides was wrong, and hopefully our humanity will never have to face another global war.

Times were bad back then, but America forgives, I just wish we could do more to save Japan from the nuclear mess we helped put you in. I think the Japanese government realizes now that you don't slack off on safety when it comes to nuclear, that's for sure. I look at the IAEA in not being more careful in making sure nuclear energy is inspected more critically.
