No surprise. Only 16% of plastic is recycled. The plastics and oil industry have lied about the recyclability of plastics. Thus, this potentially toxic substance will be with us forever, destroying our environment, while hardly anything is being done about it because so much $$$ is involved.

Yes, they're lied constantly and conned people into thinking that it's mostly recyclable, when it isn't, as you said. It's good to read the truth sometimes. The oil industry want to keep selling oil to make more plastic.

They could recycle more, but might cost one whole yen or $ per package.

The plastics industry actually came up with the logo you see on stuff that people think means it's recyclable, but that's not what it means.

Oops, change dollar to penny.

All one hears is Global Warming ad infinitum but this type of pollution is of much greater concern for it insidious nature and lack of reporting. Islands of plastic the size of Nth America in the middle of the pacific ocean but you hardly ever hear about that. Of course global warming is important but degradation of the environment through pollution is just as important if not more so!

If there are plastic additives in sea birds, you and me also have plastic additives and other chemicals...

Paul, you eat sea birds?

Or you mean fish etc that birds eat have some of this stuff in them too?

Paul & fxgai:

Yes, people have plastic too , even without eating sea birds or fish!

What have we done?

Ruin everything.

And soon they will find traces of face masks.

I remember at Uni doing studies of Nonylphenols and their ability to change sex in fish...Tried to remove as much plastic as humanly possible from my life after that!

Yet Global warming is all we hear about...While it is all linked, degredation of the environment through pollution and poor land use will see the human species seriously challenged before the extreme forecasts of global warming are even an issue!

This week an Elk was finally tracked down to remove a 20 kg tyre from around its neck which it had been carrying for 2 years.

How do they know he wasn't the leader of the herd and that tire was his chain of office?

I am surprise that it was only 52%. I would expect it to be closer to 100%.

Plastic additives found in 52% of seabirds around the globe: study

Oh yeah is that a surprise?

Humanity should make a choice at some point and stop to be hypocritical. Meaning the situation has been made worse with the generalization of the use of disposable face masks without any policy whatsoever to handle the generated waste. As of 2020 alone, it is estimated that billions of used masks have found their way into the ocean.

Disposable face masks (single use face masks) are produced from polymers such as polypropylene, polyurethane, polyacrylonitrile, polystyrene, polycarbonate, polyethylene, or polyester and therefore dramatically adding to the vast plastic and plastic particle waste in the environment.

Make a choice and stop to be all hypocrites including the so-called environment protection advocates that have totally disappeared on that subject because of the fear of publicly putting into question the mask.

Let’s just quickly found a well publicly financed global research institution to find out, why the remaining 48% don’t like to eat or don’t accumulate such plastics, and cash in easy billions for nothing in that new science field. lol

It is important that products containing these plastics not enter the environment of the seabirds . . . .

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

On the whole, we are a stupid species, careless, selfish and aloof. The other inhabitants of this planet would wish our end, am sure.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

And probably 100% in humans.

I wouldn't be surprised if all this plastic in our environment is the reason so many men are shooting blanks in the bedroom. Stick to glass bottles and storage containers if you can in my opinion.

Makes little difference. These chemicals mostly enter your system other ways.

For years they've been saying that 6-pack rings have been strangling birds on the shore. Now it seems that it ain't enough. When that tsunami and quake hit Japan 10 years ago, lots of rubbish was washed onto North American shores. And recently in the US in New York state, an elk was spotted wearing an old steelbeat radial around its neck. Rangers and cops had to sedate the beast in order to take the tire off.

Does anybody remember that crying Native American TV ad?
