Why are they calling it "sewage"? Surely it is waste rather than sewage which, to me at least, means toilet waste. Seems the Chinese are protesting this mainly because a Japanese company is involved given the amount of real sewage and garbage China either leaves lying around or pours into its rivers and seas.

They are protesting because China allowed them to. China got non-refundable money for allowing the project in the first place, so by cancelling it they keep the deposit, and by covering it up, they keep the company.
