Pony escapes from pet shop in Tokyo's Shibuya district

A pony escaped from a pet store and ran loose on the streets of Shibuya in Tokyo on Thursday night.

A passerby called 119 after seeing the animal running by Kokugakuin University at around 7 p.m., police reported.

Police rushed to the scene to find the three-year-old male pony happily munching on grass inside the university campus, and had no trouble capturing it and returning it to the pet store.

Police are investigating how the pony escaped from the pet store.

"...never mind the other creatures, but don't get me started on THAT..."

I once saw a fairly large monkey in small, cramped cage. Sad

The fact that a pet shop in Shibuya, which given the cost of real estate there must be extremely small, stocks ponies is truly disturbing. As is the fact that people living in Shibuya, who for the same reasons must live in extremely small homes, are the likely customers for such ponies.

A pony kept in a Shibuya pet store? Yeah, that sounds about right. This is Japan after all. TIJ!

Saw this on the 'news' this morning, and wondered, why was a male horse named 'Charlotte' ?

Here's an obvious question: why on earth does a pet store have ponies?

This is wrong on many levels, one of the worst for me was seeing a full grown BEAVER in an aquarium.....all it could do was wiggle a few cm forward or backwards, lord knows what they gave it for food, and it the same store was a huge sloth hanging from a branch in the corner

Sad stuff

You guys haven't learned the system yet? Old salaryman pays hostess extra for dinner out. They walk by pet store window and she screams "kawaii!" at the pony in the window. He either whips out the cash right there and then or hand delivers the pony to the hostess the following day. This is one big reason why there are pet shops in th city and why they open late night.

That's nothing. Years ago a hippo ran amok in downtown Yokohama. It was reported in the Sankei Shimbun.

@DaDude - and then after a week or so, she returns it to the same pet store, cash back to her, minus a large fee, citing it grew out of her little room.

Went to a small pet shop in Osaka with more exotic mammals than Kyoto zoo. No giraffes or elephants though. Just the usual cute addvarks, mercats etc.

Ueno has already rehearsed this, so there is a manual.

And the mother of all nets.

Was the pony striped?

What is on display in pet shops and not sold gets murdered-just seen as a commodity not something living.**** most likely the pony will....

That pony cannot actually be for sale be in Shibuya. Can there possibly be a proper place to care for it in one of the most expensive places for real estate in Tokyo? It must be for drawing potential customers into the shop.

That's horrific... what else turns up in Japan's pet shops? Lion cubs?

If you pay a pony, for a pony, is that horse trading?

Pony in the Pet Shop! How much space Pony has in the Pet Shop? Authority must check that Pet Shop whether the Pony has adequate space or not. If the Pony does not have adequate space to move around and run and then Pet Shop owner should be charge with animal cruelty.

To Yubaru... by the way Charlot was the name of Charlie Chaplin´s character in his movies. Maybe the owner mispelled the name.

DID SOMEONE SAID PONIES?
