Brian sutton - that is fundamentally untrue. Okinawa is referred to by the Okinawan people as Okinawa. Ryukyu is referred to when talking about its history. And you say you've lived there 5 years eh?

The Ryukyu Kingdom and Ryukyuans are antiquated terms. The Ryukyu Islands and Unchinanchu/Okinawans are current terms. Some say "it's a once in 13 years storm, others it's a once in 30 years storm." Might be lost in translation. Anyway, "Batten Down the Hatches" folks. Bolaven seems to be on course to cause more havoc than Bart (1999).

Don't stay unsafe people...

I'm in Okinawa and lived here for the past 5 years and I've never heard this island called by that name.. No one here calls this island "the Okinawan Island chain". BBC was correct in calling it that.

presto345 - Maria's point is that "Ryukyu Islands" is an antiquated term, like calling Taiwan "Formosa". They are the Okinawan Island chain since modern times. Why BBC would use the old term is beyond me

I was startled when the BBC called the area the Ryukyu Islands a couple of times during their weather report tonight. Have they used that before? Maybe I just never noticed, or they've never had cause to use the name before...?

Why were you startled? What would you call these islands. Check here? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryukyu_Islands

Serrano - totally stupid scientists eh? I agree. The whole lightning phenomena should have been eradicated in the '50s, too

Haven't they figured out how to stop typhoons yet? Sheesh...

Typhoons can be rather unpredictable. Round and round she goes and where she stops nobody knows. Although it does appear Typhoon Bolaven is projected to hit Korea around Monday, that's just an educated guess. Hope for best prepare for worst.

You should see the path this typhoon has taken so far -- it practically bounced off Taiwan and did a 180 to head this way. It's nearly always the typhoons with the Japanese Asian names that do the most damage here (Tokage in Niigata, Usagi in Kyushu, Yagi, etc.), so please everyone take care.

Another reason for the troops to stay. I hope it doesnt do too much damage.

Oh, if the typhoon would only blow all the troops away!

Yeah... what did you mean by that? Stay in Okinawa? it makes no sense Al Stewart... maybe the heat is starting to take effect under that cover. Your mug is frying brotha... Stay cool.
