Yo..Prince Charles here's a news update. Back in the 1970's we were told by the "EXPERTS" that we were heading into a new Ice Age for the same reasons we are now heading into Global Warming.

After the Presidental election is over in the U.S. you will see that the Global Warming issue is going to slowly go away. It was only being used for the U.S. presidental election to help out the Democrats to win the election. Once in power the Democrates will only give Global Warming lip service because it would cost to much to actually do anything that the "EXPERTS" say has to be done!

Yeah, I was told there would be no oil by the year 2000 by my teachers. I wish Japan would focus on pollution control rather than trading CO2 credits. http://www.polb.com/environment/green_port_policy/default.asp This is an example of doing something productive. Prince Charles should know that trading CO2 credits and converting his cars won't change the world. Pollution control programs will and they have the added benefit for being non-tradeable. American companies are changing while Japanese are trading. I guess Al Gore is an American Prince.

I respect His Highness but not his argument, no logic, if no money, no life, but clean climate? for whom? birds and peasants?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Thereby proving once again, that Prince Charles is unfit for the throne.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

omg.....OgieDoggie> you are joking right? RIGHT?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Some interesting comments so far, although I would differ in opinion from most: OgieDogie: This years oil price hike injured the US ecomony badly, many are still smarting from it. I would be suprised if it goes away quietly. Many (ordinary people) will be demanding alternate sources of energy to protect a whole economy from burning up. Fatloser: I think Japan is quite advanced in efforts to find ways by technical means to reduce energy consumption. Simple stuff like low energy lightbulbs are now common place here. Japan signed up to the Kyoto Treaty, the US refused (or GWB did) saying it would hurt their economy. Carbon trading is very common in the EU. It isn't a solution to consumption but it keeps awaweness high and focuses people on trying to reduce. Some14some: Hopefully "peasants" like me! ;)

Many people expect "warming" to affect us immediately - it probably wont. The recent hot summers and freak weather are (I believe - and I'm not a scientist) just cyclical items that will come and go. Nature acts over the longer term and it will be our children or most likely their children that will suffer if we continue to use the earths natural resources without any regard for sustainability. Just think of all the people in India and China who are on the verge of affording to buy a car and what affect that can have - I doubt if the cars they buy would be toyota Prius'!

"Global warming more important than financial crisis"

That's rich, coming from someone whose entire family has been leeching off the British taxpayers for centuries.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@Ogiedoggie

Sorry, you're completely wrong about the Ice Age thing. The journalists were pushing that, the experts knew better.

@Shuuu

That's rich, coming from someone whose entire family has been leeching off the British taxpayers for centuries.

Considering the amount of boring events they have to attend, the pittance they cost the UK taxpayers is worth it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Some very misled people on here.

Converting cars, etc. WILL help the environment, and will help the consumers -- at least in the long run if not the very short one. As gyouza rightly pointed out, oil prices hit the economy, and in particular the US, extremely hard. If those prices had stayed the way they were during the current final crisis it would have been insanity over there. Oil prices, save on flights, are now much lower in general than they were even two weeks ago, but your foolish if you think it will stay that way. Oil is a limited resource, and others should be sought out NOW, not once the world gets desperate again.

I agree on one point with many posters, that reduction of waste in general is as effective as CO2 credit swapping.

talking of climate, i wonder if charles will travel by japans in a league of its own public transport system. lots and lots of lesson s to take home

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"Prince Charles says global warming more important than financial crisis": That might be right for somebody who always has enough money, but what about the millions of people who will lose their jobs and house?

Prince Charles, your snobbishness cannot be beaten!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"talking of climate, i wonder if charles will travel by japans in a league of its own public transport system. lots and lots of lesson s to take home"

If you didn't know, the Royal family of Britain has little or almost zero influence on how the country should run.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

smithinjapan - Some very misled people on here.

Oh, yeah Smith! You've got that right! And, Prince Charles is right too! Global Warming is more important than the financial crisis. Some of the economic crisis can be blamed on Global Warming due to poor crops, severe storm damage, drought, etc.

Global Warming will create an Ice Age! The melting polar ice caps will slow the ocean currents in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, which currently carry warm air from the equator to the polar regions keeping the Earth's temperate climate. However, when these currents slow down the earth will freeze over. This is a similar hypothesis used in 'The Day After Tomorrow' movie, but it will be much worse than the movie and will last for centuries, not days.

"The journalists were pushing that, the experts knew better"

Time magazine quotes several experts on "the coming ice age".

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,944914,00.html

0 ( +0 / -0 )

of course he would say that. the rich are insulated from the credit crisis.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

His "snobbishness" aside, he is absoutely right. Economies have always gone up or down over the centuries. Our environment however is on a steady downward trend. Anyone who knows anything about this problem knows that we are already in danger. Coral reefs are dying, glaciers are melting at alaming rates. With continued rampant deforestation and continued increases in fossil fuels being pumped into the atmosphere, the Earths environment is going to rapidly deteriorate. I dont care what people like OgieDogie say. It is already happening.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

A typical out of touch statement from a Twit who has never had to work a day in his life. Interesting to see the Global Warming sect now crying about the coming Ice Age?? More evidence they haven't a clue about what they're talking about. Tomorrow they'll be telling me to buy parkas...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I dread the day when Prince Charles ascends to the throne. Given the thankful longevity of the Windsors, with Charles we're in for a cringeworthy forty or so years.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Charles should really get a job! blugger

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Global warming will cause extreme and unpredictable weather. It won`t necessarily cause an ice age. hoserfella. if you think there is no environmental problem, YOU absolutely have no idea what YOU are talking about.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

True ignor the credit crisis and this is a plus for the environment. All the factories and power stations would close down. China, India would revert like the rest of the world to fuedal economies and we could all have twits like Charlie boy trying to enslave us again.

He even got converting his cars wrong, a true environmentalist would have crushed fuel burning monsters like St George did to the dragons.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The Prince is allowed to speak, I thought the Queen put a muzzle on him.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Don't knock Chuck, he has always been good for a soundbite.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I like the Royal Family, but wasn't aware that Prince Charles was an authority on climate change.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

meiwaku- strange and unpredictable weather, eh? Like no typhoons hitting Japan this year, or no real hurricanes to speak of in the states? Should I run for the hills because we had a rainy summer, or because I saw hail in August? Environmentalist suckers point to anything and see the end of the world. We`re getting the same weather we were 50 years ago, but 50 years ago "Going Green" wasn't the fashionable cause du jour like it is now.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Not a days work in his life? He was in the Royal Navy. Most here wouldn't be up to that challenge.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Charles called it a “level unprecedented in human experience.”

I doubt that. Homo sapiens were having a harder time of it at the end of the last ice age.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yes your highness, whatever you say.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Damn he never has to worry about money of course he will say this.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

If there is no money there will be no project to reduce the global warming.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Doesn't he drive an Aston with a V8?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yes, yes, I know that (insert issue here that I don't benefit from screaming about) is important, but what we can't forget is the more important issue of (insert issue here that I can gain attention screaming about)!!

It worked well for an unimportant almost-president, why not an unimportant Prince/almost King?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Do I care what will happen in the next 100 or 1,000 years when I am busy trying to find something to keep me alive? And besides, the other day, they said it won't rain the whole day so I took out my laundry and had a thunderstorm in the afternoon. Today, the news said that the possibility of rain is zero percent...we just had a brief rainshower. If the computers they are using can't even predict the the chances of rain in a day, how come they can predict the climate in the next 1,000 years? I say, this climate change is all BS

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The crassness of these people is just breathtaking

I don't suppose he has a mortgage on his Gloucestershire estate that is about to be foreclosed. In fact he has never known what it is to be 'short' in his life.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

What could anyone expect from a prince nowadays...Poor tax-payers!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@Mark_McCracken

Time magazine quotes several experts on "the coming ice age".

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,944914,00.html

Err - have you read the article? It quote 3 scientist on the global cooling that was recorded at the time, and then says:

Scientists figure that only a 1% decrease in the amount of sunlight hitting the earth's surface could tip the climatic balance, and cool the planet enough to send it sliding down the road to another ice age within only a few hundred years.

Yup - if the sunlight decreased. No prediction that an ice age was coming - and the phrase "the coming ice age" is not featured in the article at all, as you suggested.

Fail

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Prince Charles is something of an eccentric, but likeable. This report is wrong in saying it is his first visit since 1970 - he was here I think in the early 1990s, with his first wife, Princess Diana, when she wowed the crowds along Omote Sando and Aoyama Dori.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Oh I say hoserfella. Were the glaciers and polar ice caps melting and breaking off at the same rate 50 years ago as now? The hottest years on record have all been in the last 20 years. Rainforests and all forests for that matter were still plentiful 50 years ago and as a result offset the CO2 released into the atmosphere. Do you know anything about this issue or do you just like to rant about nothing? Anyone who does not heed the warning signals is out of touch. Not Prince Charles. You are talking about ONE year in your last rant. Scientists are talking about patterns over many years. Have you been up to Greenland and measured weather patterns deep into glaciers? Of course it may differ from year to year. Thus the word unpredictable. No one is asking anyone to run for the hills for any reason. Who said that? You are just one of those who will put down anyone who cares about the Earth and the greater good of people. Would it hurt people to live a little more responsibly towards the environment? And as for the word "suckers", people who have anxiety about the future of the planet are from from suckers.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Since when did the Prince have to worry about money? This has not been a subject that affects him or his family. He can goo any where, do anything and say what he wants. Boy, he does have something, oh hum, to talk about. The weather ! !

0 ( +0 / -0 )

If the pesky peasants would just give up their attempts to better themselves global warming wouldn't be an issue, eh? Don't worry Charlie, when unemployment goes high enough people won't be able to afford to run their cars (except those of the upper class, of course) so there will be a big cut in CO2 right there.

I know that England prizes it's eccentrics but it's a pity they can't keep them from wandering off.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

oh, and I won't say anything rude about Cruella, oops, Camilla, this time...

"Some of us worry about a resurgent militant Islam and its attendant complications, some of us worry about global warming. In 20 years' time, one of us will be proved right and the other will look like an idiot." (Dennis Prager)

His highness will see...

"far from suckers" the end should read.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Meiwaku, I almost shed a tear reading that last one. I think I'll go out and buy me a Prius to make me feel better. Say, what do they run to now? Last I heard, Toyota increased the price... Now, can you back up any of your bogus claims with any HARD evidence? I won't hold my breath...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

meiwaku - Do you really believe, like Prince Charles and Joe Biden, that man is the cause of the polar ice caps melting?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

For your reading plesaure, Meiwaku. This, from a; gasp!....Scientist! http://www.ourcivilisation.com/aginatur/swindle.htm

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Starviking - Well, I'll be. Looks like you're right. After reviewing many of the 1970s articles, it looks like most, if not all of the articles were basically journalists taking scientists' observations about global cooling and then scaring the public into believing that another ice age could be on the way. In other words it was journalists who were pushing that. The experts knew better. Just as you said.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Look for Bill Bailey on YouTube - he sums up the royal family of Britain perfectly when he calls them 'sponging invaders'. They stole the crown from the true royal family of England and have no right to be on the throne! Prince Charles wouldn't know poor if it smacked him in the face!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I think global warming is caused by politicians all over the world spouting their hot air.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

ptolemy - Har!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Great Charlie, while you live off the tax money of the average UK citizen you can worry about global warming before whether people can feed their families. I really find his concern touching, it touches that spot in me that makes me want to vomit. I have no use for powerless figureheads trying to make themselves important.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Oh hoserfella. Do you not know who Fred Singer is? He is a scientist yes, but also a corporate lackey. For your reading and viewing pleasure please check out the following links. http://www.cbc.ca/fifth/denialmachine/video.html http://guardian.co.uk/environment/2005/may/10/environment.columnists You picked an article by one of the few crackpots out there who refutes the global warming science. What a joke! Do you know the meaning of bogus? Hard evidence? This guy can certainly not be trusted. Read and watch. Somehow, however, I don`t think YOU will be convinced.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

No. I am no expert on global warming and I have not been to Greenland but at least I check out the source of my information before being so boastful.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sarge. I believe a panel of 2000 scientists from all over the globe. But I guess you probably believe good ol` George Bush.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I dunno if anybody believes what W says any more, but doesn't he agree that global warming is a problem? I thought he was trying to blame the Chinese though? Well, I'm sure lil prince Charlie will put him straight. That way he can stop worrying about the financial meltdown and go back to the coloring books. Pass me the chartruse, willya?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I have always erred on the side of sceptics and require proof for things, but there is another way of looking at it:

1) Man made global warming is a fact - Outcomes: a) change behaviour, save the earth b) ignore, be a sceptic, ruin the planet

2) Global warming is a myth Outcomes: a) change behaviour, mildly inconvenience yourself b) ignore, be a sceptic, find out that you were right all along and the irritating environmentalist were just whingeing do-gooders.

So the outcomes are either 1a or 2a OR 2a or 2b. Or a case of better be sage than sorry.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The odd thing is that the solution to Global Warming and the Financial Crisis are the same. The idea is that to stop/slow Global Warming one needs to reduce their waste/consume less. The financial crisis was created by people over consuming, the obvious long-term solution to the financial crisis is stop over consuming. For the last few years the wife and I have been focused on making or life styles more efficient, which in process has made us slightly more enviromentally friendly but the best part is our discretionary income % has increased from about 65% to 75%(less worry about the financial crisis).

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@Mark_McCracken

Yup - just journos spinning. That said - they did make an awful lot of noise about it in the 70's. I was a kid way back then and I remember it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@meiwaku- I knew as soon as I sent that you'd counter with the usual predictable defence; "He's a corporate lacky!" The battle cry of the Church of the Bleeding Heart. And you HAVEN'T been to Greenland? Of which you spoke with so much authority and conviction? I had visions of you chatting with me in between your experimental drilling of ice caps. I'm shocked!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I had the good fortune to meet Charlie once. Very posh, but he doesn't look down on you and listens carefully to what you have to say.

he knows a lot about the environment and global warming, he studies it religously. his Duchy biscuits are delightfull as well, lovely with earl Grey drunk out of my fave Westlife mug, bliss!!!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Did you even watch the video or read the article hoserfella? You really seem to be stuck on this Greenland thing. You really need some more material. I also mentioned rainforests. Do you want to get on my case about not having been there either? And your response is as I expected. I think you can be a little more constructive than that. Because you are really hurting my feelings now.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Meiwaku-Are you not typing this whist chained to a tree in the Brazilian rainforest either?? have you even been to Brazil? By the way, it's frickin' cold today. In fact, the weather guy said it's unseasonably cold. I guess all those Priuses on the street have done the trick, eh?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

whilst chained

0 ( +0 / -0 )

You got nothing.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

great retort. you certainly backed up all your bogus claims with that one..

0 ( +0 / -0 )

usaexpat: Prince Charles' constitutional position is another subject, but there's no doubt that what he's saying is correct. There ain't much point having economy prosperity if the cost of such "success" is to cause the planet's ecosystem to collapse.

Criticising someone for raising the issue is daft - after all, the one man who can make a really substantial difference to the problem - your President - has spent the last 8 years encouraging all of the trends that make global warming worse, not to mention wasting hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars on making the world a more dangerous and unhappy place. If you want to talk about wasting taxpayers money, lI suggest that you look at where your own taxes are being spent first...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I would rather tend to suspect what he suggests is that we should enlarge the trading market of CO2 credits as part of the efforts to find a way out of the present financial crisis. Trading of CO2 credits, as some people argue, is just another "derivative" contrived by using the financial engineering and scapegoating all of a sudden a substance which is necessary for photosynthesis and is constantly swapped between greenery and air. Royalty seems to be a laudable publicity for British national strategy with an authentic touch. Even though it's perhaps not a becoming remark for a prince to say outspokenly that financial crisis is more important than global warming, he may or may not be aware that tsunami of credit crunch worldwide is going to strike us all irreversibly.

In the following url you can see satellite pictures which were recently printed in a British newspaper showing Arctic ice coverage in 1997 compared to 2007. These pictures originally came from the World Wildlife Fund, an organisation of which Princes Charles' father is a patron and former president.

<i>Climate change is 'faster and more extreme' than feared</i>

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/3226747/Climate-change-is-faster-and-more-extreme-than-feared.html#comments

If you look carefully you will see that the 1997 picture has been doctored to show more ice than was actually there. The top half of both pictures are <i>exactly</i> the same (ie: no change over a 10 year period) while it can be seen that the 'ice' in the bottom half of the 1997 picture has been airbrushed in.

It's interesting that an organisation which Charles' father is closely associated with needs to resort to photoshop to sell their propaganda. But I'll give Charles the benefit of the doubt - maybe he hasn't been told that Arctic ice coverage has increased over last year. This year has seen a 31% increase in ice coverage over the previous year, or roughly the same size as Germany.

Disillusioned at 10:13 AM JST - 29th October

Global Warming will create an Ice Age!

and War is peace, black is white, etc etc

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@Weedkilla

You're seeing what you want to see in the Telegraph report. If you bothered to look at the actual WWF Report you'd see that there's no pictures comparing Arctic ice coverage therein - the exaggerated images are courtesy of the Telegraph...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@Weedkilla

Also, the Telegraph is comparing 1979 ice coverage to 2007 - there is no 1997 picture.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Now, if anyone wants to compare the difference between actual Arctic ice coverage in September 1979 and September 2007 you can check it out at http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/ (There's a link at the bottom of the page).

Now the images returned have a different orientation than the Telegraph images - but they are pretty similar, if not identical - lots of ice loss off Eastern Siberia, Western North America.

Looks like even the Telegraph has nothing to answer for...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

If you bothered to look at the actual WWF Report you'd see that there's no pictures comparing Arctic ice coverage therein

Yes, you're right, there are no pictures with the WWF report. But the report does say; "The latest science shows that the Arctic Ocean is losing sea ice up to 30 years ahead of IPCC predictions. It is now predicted that the summer sea ice could completely disappear between 2013 and 2040 – something that hasn’t occurred in more than a million years."

http://www.panda.org/about_wwf/what_we_do/climate_change/news/index.cfm?uNewsID=148141

It's interesting they would say such a thing when Arctic ice cover has now returned to a situation which is within normal limits for this time of year while the amount of summer ice this year was much more than in 2007.

Also, while the WWF issues these extreme warnings they also offer luxury package tours which do nothing for the environment and emissions of CO2. If they really believed man was causing the earth to warm then I don't think they would be so confident about offering luxury world-wide tours in a private jet.

For a price tag that starts at $64,950 per person, travelers will meet at the Ritz-Carlton in Orlando, Fla. on April 6, 2009 and then fly to “remote corners” of the world on a “specially outfitted jet that carries just 88 passengers in business-class comfort.”

http://www.worldwildlife.org/travel/2009/Africa/WWFTripitem7467.html

Also, the Telegraph is comparing 1979 ice coverage to 2007 - there is no 1997 picture.

You're right about their being no 1997 picture. The Telegraph has taken the 2007 photo and used it for the 1997 pic. (after doctoring it, of course.) To say it's exaggerated image is an exaggeration. It's a straight out lie.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Look at the top of the page of the Telegraph article. Photo one is of 1979 - there are no references on the page to 1997 at all

Your basic assumption is incorrect.

Photo one is of 1979 - there are no references on the page to 1997 at all

Apologies, you're quite right. Still, whether it's a 10 year difference or a 28 year difference the result is the same - ie: people are being misled. That was my point

frontandcentre: I'm no fan of Bush but any attempt to fix the global warming problem that strangles America's economy while letting China off the hook as a "developing nation" shouldn't be accepted by America. On that one Bush got it right. I stand by my attack on Prince Charles I see no redeeming value. If he were doing humanitarian work instead of touting the global warming agenda I would respect him a whole lot more. Don't buy into the panic, global warming is not going to result in an overnight catastrophe as Gore and company like to promote. Yes global warming needs to be addressed but people need to eat first.

Good Jorb: Not what I said at all. I believe in energy independence inlcuding clean coal and drilling at home. I believe we whould also be spending a lot more on alternative energy to reduce our dependence on the Middle East. My point still remains that the immediate need of feeding your family and keeping a roof over your head trunps global warming.

feeding your family and keeping a roof over your head

All related to price of oil (Farmers use petro-chemicals for fertilizer, transporting, and such. Houses are powered/heated by(gas and/or gas powerplants sometimes). Reducing the use of petro-chemicals, should make it cheaper to feed your family and keep roof over your head, as well it keeps the wealth in the US and it helps a neighbor feed his family and keep a roof over his head. I'm fence-sitting on the whole global warming idea but I most certianly believe in peak oil.

Of course he said so because he doesnt work and is not worried about gain money, it is very easy if you have that condition to say "hey, money is not a big problem".

@omarbabilon

Excuse me - he does work. He has official appointments, opening ceremonies, official visits, and charity work to do. He is constantly being shuffled across the UK, Commonwealth and the world doing work on behalf of the government.

As a possible future head of state of the UK and other Commonwealth countries he has to worry about the future of those countries - and the state of the environment has a great deal to do with the future.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"@omarbabilon Excuse me - he does work. He has official appointments, opening ceremonies, official visits, and charity work to do. He is constantly being shuffled across the UK, Commonwealth and the world doing work on behalf of the government."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Sure, "HE WORKS", it seems he and Paris Hilton work for the same company, HAHAHAHAHAHAHA....

And about "possible future head os state of the UK". I'm so sorry to break your dreams, but the Her Majesty, The Queen, still looks very healthy and without any intention to retire, so I'm not sure if he will be King, do you think so dear??....

0 ( +0 / -0 )

On your first point omarbbabilon: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

As for your second comment - everyone dies sometime, and the human race exists because sons and daughters usually outlive their parents. So, yes - I do think Charles will be King someday."
