Advantage Komuro.
The ex-lover of Komuro’s mother has emphasized that he has never requested any repayment of any money.
In fact, according to reports, the entire “¥4 million fiasco” is a flame that has been fanned by the Imperial Household Agency (IHA) and elements of the Japanese press to drive away Komuro in response to the Agency supposedly being inundated with critical phone calls immediately after the initial engagement announcement.
Your move IHA.

Kiko kawashima is the driving force here. She won't like any attempt to negotiate and will probably try to scupper it. She just does not want her daughter to marry that man.
Speed
I still can't understand how a debt by a relative can prevent these two kids from getting married, especially one as rich as the J royal family.
AG
Leave them alone, let them get married and be happy, unlike most couples in the rest of the country.
Mr Kipling
I suspect there is more to this story than ¥4M in school fees.
Alan Harrison
Kiko will obviously try to get her younger daughter Kako on her side to try to prevent this wedding.

Its Japan. The degree of meddling in other people's business is on another level here.

What I would like to know is who is bank rolling Mr. Komuro? Every time we see him in the US he has bodyguards. Last time I checked Fordham law school is about $65,000 per year, and Mr. Komuro was a lowly para-legal. Now he is resolved to pay back an extra Y4 million! Just wondering. I think this is why the family is wary of this guy and what are his motives.

You don’t pay the whole tuition up front. There are loans and all kinds of financial aid.

If only Princess Mako would wake up and realize that she has responsibilities as a member of the imperial family before pursuing her personal happiness.
Desert Tortoise
I worked and paid cash for my undergraduate and graduate degrees, graduating both times debt free with money in the bank, but I didn't attend Fordham and I took a few years longer than most to complete my degrees.

Come on Fumihito, be a man. Stand up to your wife, and tell your younger daugher to get a mind of her own.

Comments like these is the reason that people in Japan are so unhappy in life and the rate of depression as well as suicide is extremely high! People like you will never find happiness and love!

Kiko and Kako vs Mako.

Not sure what you are talking about, when you attend university you pay up front, unless you borrow and then have to repay a bank. Not sure how much financial aid there is for foreign students.
All I am saying is for a young man whose family had to borrow money for him to attend university in Japan, it seems strange that suddenly he is flush to attend one of the more expensive law schools in the US.

I intend to do things every day however I do not seem to do everything I intend to do.
"The boyfriend of Princess Mako, the niece of Japanese Emperor Naruhito, intends to pay money to his mother's former fiance in an effort to settle a long-standing money dispute, his lawyer said Monday"
Alfie Noakes
As if. It's common knowledge that Kiko's father had to go up the palace and insist to the then-Emperor that the prince do the decent thing and offer to marry his daughter.
gogogo
There is more to this, obviously the mother broke up with the boyfriend who was paying for her son's university and now has demanded the money back.
Boku Dayo
There's more to this than 4 million JPY. Check out his mother's background for some "interesting" facts. She for one, has got more than one skeleton in the closet.

Kiko and Kako vs Mako
sounds like this family is kuku
1738Kwaaa!!
At this moment, this is what it exactly means!

Everytime, there is something shady or controversial going on with the Crown prince and his family, I wager 9 times out 10 that Kiko has something to do with it. She seems like a scheming woman. Even her fake smile seems untrustworthy!
That being said, Komuro's mother might have been conning this former boyfriend or "benefactors" to provide a better life for her and her son! Women who believe they have few options have done it in the past and will continue to do so in the future.
Seesaw7
If Kiko controls things (though she doesn't look like it) I wonder what kind of Shuutome she will be .. kowaii
Mark
Wow, now why is this news worthy?
itsonlyrocknroll
I cannot except that a financial dispute over 4 million yen ($36,600) contributed, not for one moment, in the postponement of Princess Mako and Kei Komuro nuptials.
In the 24-page statement, Komuro vowed to "correct erroneous information as much as possible," referring to news reports of a feud between his mother and her former fiancé over money, including Komuro's educational expenses, which the ex-fiancé shouldered but Komuro and the mother regarded as a gift.
Maybe the manner in which this rather vulgar dispute has been the subject of a media farce, isn’t congenial to say the least.
I sense a whiff though, of political intrigue.
InspectorGadget
Where has the money suddenly come from? If he wasn't in a position to pay before what has changed?
I would wager that somehow someone in a position of power has made finds available with the express directive to Kei Komuro to make the problem go away as this as been a huge embarassment to the Royal Family.
Laguna
That's coming on a decade now of "studying." Just sayin'.
porto
2018-2021... 3ish years of study is coming on a decade?
Most bachelors degrees require at least 3-4 years....
Then masters degrees are additional...
So nearly a decade of being enrolled in university seems about right.
kohakuebisu
I don't know what is going on but the official story of a chicken-feed-for-rich-people loan is laughable. You'd have to be very naive to believe it is this and only this.
noriahojanen
A lengthy letter without an executive summary... I'd suggest that Komuro appear in a press conference and account for questions unanswered. Or get interviewed one-on-one and on record by someone other than Oprah Winfrey (ups!).
I'm not interested in tabloid-level stories. What concerns me most is whether and how the royal life and activities will be maintained while its family size is shrinking in disproportionate to rising demands and popularity for public duties.
TARA TAN KITAOKA
More important is the couple happiness.

From Kyodo:
U.S. backs Japan's decision to release Fukushima plant treated water
https://english.kyodonews.net/news/2021/04/6789babe1165-breaking-news-fukushima-water-release-in-line-with-intl-safety-standards-us.html
I think it'd be fine to be worried or critical over the issue, it may be a natural reaction for humans. But then why remaining ignorant or silent about the fact that almost all active nuclear plants around the world have been releasing tons of the treated water into sea, quite regularly? Fukushima's water will be diluted sufficiently or even more than equivalents from other plants.
The current water storage is also risky to contingencies and inhibiting to smooth dismantling and reconstruction work.
Without valid reason and fair-assessment, many Fukushima critics would be regarded or downgraded as hypocrite or science-illiterate.

The story of these two is just what often happen in Japan in a lower degree as well.
People can’t be happy here because they must first care of the people around them and what they think before themselves.
If they love each other and they feel they can work it out then let them be.
But public opinions, the pressure to appear like a good puritan conservative even if one’s is not makes these people so sick and frustrated.
This is one of the reason why this country has such a high percentage of people with mental disturbs and even high rate suicides.
All their unwritten strict rules choke people.
Crashpilot
That is what you get if a bunch of stone age politicians and bureaucrats decide what the members of the imperial family think, say and do. I wonder if ever one member of this family has the guts to say NO to them and does what she/he thinks is best for her/his own good.
starpunk
NOW will these two lovebirds get married? This is absolutely ridiculous to the max.
shogun36
Who the hell has time to type up a 24 page statement?
zurcronium
Exhibit A as to why the royal family system in Japan is obsolete
Just like in the UK.
Blacklabel
paying to get married, not to get divorced. That’s old school!
oyatoi
Japanese treatment of this imperial scandal is tatemae dissimulation at its finest. They know that we know and we know that they know that we know, that the loan story is a complete and utter crock.
Paul
They should just elope and screw the RF
Mark
This is NOT about money, and I am not sure what is driving this dispute, but at some point the truth will surface.
CaptDingleheimer
What a joke.
In season 2, she ditches the fiancé for a gaijin boyfriend, instantaneously sending 80+ million ojajis into the ultimate tizzy, a la the UK where half the country and press got all mad about a black lady moving into the Royal Palace and forced their young prince to pack up his young family and hit the bricks.
Mocheake
I'd just find some young hottie and forget about this royalty bee es. Guaranteed to be miserable.
CaptDingleheimer
Hear, hear!

It is not that much money to tack on to a student loan. Half a year's tuition? Less than the cost of most new cars? Stick it on the student loan and worry about it later. Get the immediate problem solved and marry the woman you love. I knew a lot of law students who bought some really nice European cars and put them on their student loans.
Desert Tortoise
Ever seen how much paper lawyers generate? Dude's studying to be an attorney. Typing 24 pages of cogent text is trivial. It's like breathing.
