I hope the Princess has only wonderful experiences during her 17th year. In our hearts, we pray her seventeen wishes come true.

About time they changed the law and llowed women to be Emperor. It's just silly to persist with this male only nonsense.
Why do they dress female royals like old ladies who only have access to discount shops. She's 17, for goodness sake, not 117. The Imperial family are in a great position to champion and promote Japanese designers and labels.

It is a huge disservice to all Japanese that this modern nation does not allow females to ascend the throne.

and this is important........why? Nobody cares! people live, celebrate birthdays and die everyday. I can think of 3 people who are more important than her who actually does something to help/make other peoples lives better.

Happy Birthday Princess, Aiko, whatever you are forced to wear.

Why do the royal females in Japan dress like grandmothers when they are young? And why do they dress like airline attendants of yesteryear on adulthood?
I don't understand why they aren't showcasing the fascinating fabrics as well as the top-tier and up-and-coming designers of Japan in their apparel. It might do much to revive the textile industry and highlight more designers globally.

"And?"
She's a Japanese Princess and she's turned 17.
You're NOT!!!
Her birthday is being reported in Japan, for the knowledge of Japanese people.
Not you!

Many happy returns to Princess Aiko, and congratulations on successfully completing the English language and cultural course at Eton Collage.
I understand there is an assessment process on arrival and departure.

What a way to spend your birthday! That sofa looks seriously uncomfortable. Hope she enjoyed her time in the UK, it must be refreshing to see the world outside the confines of the Imperial Houshold.
Wouldn't it be fun if all the members who studied abroad revolted and demanded freedom and equality!

Hope she doesn’t have and English boyfriend who she loves and isnt royalty. Chanel 10 this morning had over 1 hour about the princess who fell in love with a commoner.

Don't agree with this imperial/royal stuff, but if they're going to have it, they should get rid of this sexual inequality. Practically every westerm monarchy has a certain level of equality between the sexes. Japan stands right next to the Muslim royal familes.
For the monent, Aiko can just wait till the day she is booted out of the family and becomes a commoner. Mind you, if I were her, I'd gladly become a commoner. She'd actually gain some freedom.

And? So we are all turning a day, a week, or even a year older.

And Princess Aiko turned 17.

“under Japan's Imperial House Law, Princess Aiko is not eligible to ascend the throne, which is restricted to males.”
Heh-Heh. Funny, isn’t this how the corporate ladder throughout Japan’s workforce operates too??

I just can’t get past the fact that every picture of a royal family member inJapan is them sitting on an ugly sofa in a room Full of cheap presswood features and garbage linoleum flooring, always under the glow of white flourescent lighting. Basically it always looks like they are in a Nittori showroom.
I just find this so depressing...even royalty is surrounded by the crap contemporary residential decor that makes modern Japanese housing so ugly.

And?

Happy Birthday! When she blew out the candles on her birthday cake, she wished for a room that didn't have pegboard walls.
