Princess Kako leaves for England to study at University of Leeds

36 Comments

Princess Kako, a granddaughter of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, on Tuesday departed for England where she will study at the University of Leeds until June next year.

The 22-year-old daughter of Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko, currently a junior at International Christian University in Tokyo, will study performing arts and psychology as an exchange student from ICU, the Imperial Household Agency said.

The princess left from Haneda airport, bound for Leeds in West Yorkshire via London. She will stay in a student dormitory.

It will be her first overseas stay since the summer of 2013, when she undertook a month-long homestay in the United States as a freshman at Tokyo's Gakushuin University. She quit Gakushuin the following year and entered ICU in April 2015.

Her 25-year-old sister Princess Mako, who announced her engagement on Sept 3, also undertook ICU's exchange program to study at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland for 10 months from September 2012.

I've never noticed the royal family all that much. They're pretty anonymous compared to the British variety.

But if they're choosing Leeds and therefore Yorkshire, over the splendid alternative just to the west of the Pennines, well... I'm saying nowt....

I hope someone told her its a real university, ie, one where students actually study.

Please please please come back with a Yorkshire accent.

Wouldn't that be just wonderful.

I hope she's packed her woollies. It can get a bit brisk in winter, doing the Otley run.

the splendid alternative just to the west of the Pennines

Kendal? I hear they have a good car maintenance course at the college. That would be cool.

Leeds ? Oh dear.

I hope she can study at this University. I still have the twin boys if she wants to do something later?

Kako knows how to study. I have met her and she is a very smart girl. She has been to a number of overseas universities before. She is very bright.

"will study performing arts and psychology"

Okay, the study of Psychology is no problem, but I don't understand why she studies Performing arts? Perhaps, she should world history. Perhaps, I'm dumber.

why she studies Performing arts?

Because acting is part of the job.

Given the fact that their education is paid from taxes collected from all of us, I've been always wondering why the children from the imperial family don't try to choose more financially affordable educational options but instead all go to rather expensive private schools, starting from elementary school. And, how do they choose which one of them gets to go to which overseas program (high school or university, home stay or regular student exchange, etc.). It's a little sad to see how many kids in Japan can't afford even domestic higher education (one in six children in Japan live in poverty).

@Goodluck

before love

Sounds a long, lonely time ago.... : )

The Orbit in Morley, Mint Club and Warehouse were my favourite haunts when I studied there but that was 20 years ago. I had a great time and hope she does too.

Does anyone here know what she chose Leeds?

Sure there were unreleased reasons/issues involved. Till that gets made public ...

0 ( +1 / -1 )

^^^^ It's part of a student exchange between her current university in Tokyo and The University Of Leeds, or that's what it says in the article anyway.

Does anyone here know what she chose Leeds?

Her Dad and uncle both went to Oxford. Perhaps Leeds is an attempt to be less elite.

I hope she gets the chance to enjoy local uni life and isn't hemmed in by security wherever she goes.

Bi gud ifn'er did cum bak wi'a yorksher aksen, wunnit.

As a Londoner I would say Leeds is a good choice or Edinburgh both winning cities, hope she has some fun!

All the royals have the famous Oxford accent. I imagine the princess has a somewhat similar one from private tutors.

@BeerDG

"Oxbridge", as in the universities, not "Oxford", as in the city.

An Oxford accent is semi west-country, and therefore a tiny bit, shall we say, lethargic....

My mistake...

Obviously, I'm not British.

Whoops. Big fan of Championship Football, the Princess. Little known fact.

@Tamarama

Putting aside my anti-Yorkshire schtick for a moment, the rumour in the local press is that she's always wanted to be a dancer, and that Leeds has a respected Performance Arts course.

But that's rumour for you...

Leeds is the Milan of England, good choice, could have got a plastic London education, she'll learn a lot more in the North.
