Princess Kako, a granddaughter of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, on Tuesday departed for England where she will study at the University of Leeds until June next year.
The 22-year-old daughter of Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko, currently a junior at International Christian University in Tokyo, will study performing arts and psychology as an exchange student from ICU, the Imperial Household Agency said.
The princess left from Haneda airport, bound for Leeds in West Yorkshire via London. She will stay in a student dormitory.
It will be her first overseas stay since the summer of 2013, when she undertook a month-long homestay in the United States as a freshman at Tokyo's Gakushuin University. She quit Gakushuin the following year and entered ICU in April 2015.
Her 25-year-old sister Princess Mako, who announced her engagement on Sept 3, also undertook ICU's exchange program to study at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland for 10 months from September 2012.© Japan Today/Kyodo
