Miyagi Gakuin Women's University in Sendai said it will not require students to submit medical certification to prove their gender identity to avoid forced outing.

And what are they going to do when the "guy" has to show identification to the school, as in his HS transcripts etc etc etc, it will show that "she" is a "he" and he will be outed right then.

Applications are not secret within the school, and there are any number of ways that the information could be leaked, intentional or otherwise.

How will they protect these folks then?

Umm, congrats?

You need (can actually get??) a medical certificate to prove how you "feel" about your body?

Big news.

I think as along as a man is willing to explore the idea of whether he has a feminine side he should be granted access to the University and be treated exactly the same with no restrictions as all the other students.

And what about women?

Would other students like the idea of sharing restrooms with transgenders?

So are they accepting transgenders or born males who identify themselves as women (no surgery)?

Your High School records are not public documents that are available to anyone. Your High School records are a private document maintained by a public entity, like your taxes or medical history. When a school sees your transcript it is because they have been authorized access, which you have given them by way of submitting an application. If someone were to out a student, they would be violating some pretty big protocols and attaching their school to a bad scandal. While it is possible, outing someone based on their hs transcript is highly unlikely.

Good point, Mr K. And what about those who get fed up with the charade half way through their studies, and realise that they are a man after all? It happens!

The article says they will be admitted with no questions asked... I see a comedy about a guy who fails Todai and Waseda and decides to dress up. Wacky hijinks and a love interest dilemma ensue!

But seriously, gender dysphoria is a genuine condition, and it would be an injustice to actual sufferers to allow just anyone “confused” about their gender without medical documentation.

I wonder why there is such a thing as a "women's university" anyway. What does it have to do with a formal four year study what genital grouping a student's body belongs to? Education is about minds, not about naughty bits. Those for extra curricular activities, surely!

Are there really that many?

Good question, BigYen-san. Probably not, but they are very noisy and that makes it seem like there are a lot of them.

I am assuming there are reasons for the existance of a women's university, so I expect that some students and parents will not be very happy with this university going along with this nonsense.

And its not like these so-called transgender students can only choose between women's universities and men's universities.

Some people will always resist change, it's human nature (cf. African American students at southern American schools), but I don't see any reason why transgender women should be forced to apply only to unisex universities. This university is definitely making a step in the right direction.

I do not understand unisex schools or university. This is anyway already discrimination.

Does it also mean they will have a third gender toilet or can the transgenders use whichever one they like?

@Open Minded: For young men who are easily distracted and young women who are tired of being hit on everywhere they go (some women have that magic) they are a great idea. I still don't like them though because I feel they are mostly populated by prudes who don't need their prudish values reinforced.

Private discrimination is just fine. Its public discrimination where the problem lies. That said, colleges are in the middle but I guess I have to side with the freedom to have such colleges. Call me Mr. Freedom.

I went to university, but didn't need to go into a changing room once. Sport there wasn't obligatory.

Identifying as someone or something doesn't make it true. If you want to respect women, you shouldn't tell them that someone who only identifies as a woman, is a real woman. I would never want to send my children to a school which accepts current thinking about transgenders, as if all that matters is what you feel and what you want.

How exactly does a biological male know what it feels like to be female given that the male has never been female?

How does a biological female know what it feels like to be a male?

How does someone who has never felt like they were born in the wrong body understand the feeling of one who feels like they were?

They don't because they lack context, just like a cross dressing man lacks context to know what it feels like to be a woman and a cross dressing female lacks context to knowxwhat it feels like to be a man.

If any university wants to be picky about who they allowed to join their institution, I’m perfectly fine with that. The whole idea of a women’s university allowing only women to attend is completely acceptable to me. And a university that decides to allow only women, and men who feel like they are women is also acceptable to me. The only problem comes when someone demands that men who think they are women receive equal treatment to women who are women even though that may infringe upon some rights of those women

So if this university wants to go and do that, great. But just because they allow men who think they are women into a woman’s university doesn’t mean that those men are any more female than they were before.

Accepting a lie doesn’t make it true.

Just to be very clear, I completely support people cross dressing and acting like a member of the opposite sex. I, however, completely disagree with those people expecting the rest of us to suspend our realities to accommodate their alleged feelings.

A great example of this is men who feel female engaging in female sports and stomping the hell out of female athletes that are female and don't merely feel female.

I agree. I think either trans women need to have their own category, or participate with males. It's not fare to naturally born women to have to compete with those who grew up with male hormones.

But you're denying their gender identity and hurting their feelings.

No, that’s incorrect.

No one is born in the wrong body. Would you say that to someone with a physical disability? Anorexia? Schizophrenia?
