Prosecutor for Crimea becomes a hit online in Japan

A young female lawyer who is the prosecutor for Crimea after Moscow incorporated the region into its territory from Ukraine, has won a huge Internet following for her attractive looks, especially in Japan.

Natalya Poklonskaya, 34, has become a web sensation around the world for her good looks and soft voice during the crisis between Russia and Ukraine over the Black Sea peninsula.

She became the top prosecutor for Crimea after publicly breaking with the authorities in Kiev and backing the leaders of the peninsula who supported Crimea becoming Russian territory.

After formally taking the peninsula last week, Russia has now confirmed she will be the chief prosecutor for Crimea as a constituent part of the Russian Federation.

"Natalya Vladimirovna Poklonskaya is named prosecutor for the Republic of Crimea," the General Prosecutor's official spokeswoman Maria Gridneva said in a statement to Russian news agencies.

Poklonskaya's March 11 news conference, where she appears in her prosecutor's uniform with a tie, has now garnered over 1.3 million hits on YouTube while a Facebook fan club has over 70,000 followers.

Her good looks and soft voice have shocked those used to butch-looking prosecutors in the former Soviet Union and also contrast with her sometimes uncompromising language.

Poklonskaya has become a particular sensation in Japan, where images of her as a heroine in manga comic strips -- complete with the tie of a prosecutor -- have gone viral on the Internet.

"Believe me, my sweet looks have not impeded me during my 12 years work at the prosecutor's office," she told Russia's Life News television channel in an interview earlier this month. "Maybe it can make my opponents drop their guard."

She condemned the overthrow of President Viktor Yanukovych as an "illegal coup and armed takeover". The new authorities in Kiev have launched a criminal probe against her but she said: "I am not a criminal. I am not afraid of them. Justice will prevail."

According to Life News, she likes to play the piano and to draw. Her now famous news conference is viewable below.

Yep we should all just stop what we're doing and worry our little socks off like you, running around like headless chickens and wringing our hands about things we can't control screaming OH MY GOD WORLD WAR 3 PEOPLE

or....we could keep living our lives as normal, finding joy in simple things.

Just a thought.

"Rapid blinking eye movements during speaking signals unease. She's nothing but Putin's mouthpiece."

She is simply uneasy about speaking in public. Make no mistake, she has a sizeable experience as a prosecutor.

Pretty, blonde hair, pale complexion, big eyes, uniformed and in a high position of authority – she’s got ‘otaku fodder’ written all over her!

It seems that some places in the USA have no radio, TV and internet. Folks still guess they are in Cold War reality.

Either that, or some people still watch and believe the mainstream news media.

Looks like the Kremlin wanted a poster girl... and they got one.

Great stategy by the Russians, make the face of 'the enemy' super cute, wooing the weak minded men to support Russian interests, lust is blind.

Crimea after Moscow incorporated the

She was appointed BEFORE Moscow annexed the Crimea.

Well, whatever. She does look cute, at least. Looks more like 18 than 34 IMO.

She's blond and hot. End of.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

She is totally cool but not soft spoken at all, I think people dont get Russian intonation , her voice might have pleasant notes but she sounds quite strict and direct person, even scary at points.

Now where is James Bond

Cute in prosecute. Now that is funny! Do you suppose otaku will travel to Crimea and commit crimes so they can be prosecuted by Natalia?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

She's attractive but she doesn't exactly possess a soft voice, like the article says she does. It's pleasant but not soft.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Well she does put the cute in prosecute.

A lot Japanese men have an infatuation with either Russian or Filipino women. Several times I heard a Japanese guy talking about the Russian curling team.

This is a news conference and she is discussing points of law. She is nervous but she seems to know her stuff. I really do not find anything glamorous about this video.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

I suspect the otaku fascination with uniforms and cosplay have something to do with the interest.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

She came back well from the cell phone interruption. Got to give here credit for that.... although I think next time... if there is one... she'll turn the phone off first.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Ah, more fodder for millions of Japanese 'otaku' to beat off to!

Chief prosecutor? Beware of looks, there lies an iron fist behind the veil, especially if those higher up are putting a lot of pressure on her. She looks nervous which might indicate that there are some thug types watching and waiting in the wings. Wish I understood Russian...
