Rare gold saury worth weight in actual gold

Tokyo’s famous Tsukiji Fish Market saw some intense bidding this week when two rare gold-colored saury from Iwate went on sale, proving once again that people are suckers for things that glitter.

Saury are a popular autumn food in Japan, usually served grilled with grated daikon radish. One regular saury will set you back a few hundred yen, but if you want a golden one, you’ll have to be willing to shell out a whole lot more.

The two sold last Wednesday went for 10,000 yen each wholesale to high-end fish monger Uoko, who plan to send one each to their shops in Ikebukuro and Ogikubo. No word yet on how much they will retail for, though we’re guessing you might want to bring some actual gold or your first-born child to trade.

"10,000 yen each"

Something is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.
