Rare shot shows 2 distinct seasons meeting in one place

“Japan has four seasons” is a phrase many will often hear and sometimes be confused by as it sometimes comes across as a unique claim, but what it’s often meant to express is that the country has very distinct and pronounced seasons.

At Daisen Mountain in Tottori Prefecture, the first cold wave of winter hit earlier than usual this year, and the scenery there shared by Takashi Karaki (@karakky0918) captures that distinct change in seasons.

There were still lots of colorful fall leaves left on the trees in the mountain area. However, due to the early arrival of the cold wave, the mountain was partially covered in snow that day. As a result, a very rare “boundary of fall and winter season” appeared on the surface of the mountain.

Take a look at the rare sight of the seasonal “change”that Karaki was able to photograph on Nov 10.

A beautiful, rare sight of trees covered in both snow and vibrant fall leaves converging both in one picture not edited in any way .

This magical photo of the boundary of the seasons that Karaki took gained a lot of attention, and touched many people leaving comments and praise:.

"How rare is this sight?! And it’s so touching how beautiful it is!"

"He definitely captured a magical moment."

"This is incredible how clear the boundary is… the wonder of nature."

You can enjoy both the fall and winter scenery in this one photo. It is also a sign that winter is actually just around the corner, too.

Japan has four seasons.

One month of rainy season.

One month of jungle heat.

One month of cold.

Nine months of road repair.

Peter Neil, so true.

It seems to always be rainy season..

Good thing the top ski lift is in winter.

This is more about climate change that Japan's "unique" four seasons. Other places throughout the world are increasingly seeing seasonal mix-ups and inconsistencies in the landscape.

The colors in the picture are stunning. I can't quite believe that it wasn't photoshopped or touched up.

@purple_depressed_bacon

Guaranteed it was curve adjusted and leveled at least. Not “shopped” to hell and back with amateur “hdr-ifying” though.

So do a lot of other places. Get over it.

@Garthgoyle:

You’re right! I forget about pollen (sugi) season.

The picture depicts autumn snow, nothing new.

This four seasons stuff is nonsense, though.

Japan is not unique for having four seasons, it is however, the only "safety country with four seasons".

Yeah, foreigners love giving it this description.

I've literally never heard a Japanese person say it.

Excellent picture.

I think what's said about Japan that is unusual is that it has five seasons, with the Rainy Season coming between spring and summer

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Doesn’t Japan have 5 seasons if you include the “rainy season.”

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Nothing special about Japanese seasons but that's an incredible photo. Especially if it wasn't photoshopped.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

That's a great photograph.

Yeah, foreigners love giving it this description.

One said it to me this morning.

It's all cool, it's more of a question of being able to express themselves in English than anything. It's just something that tends to strike foreigners as weird as we'd never say it.

I'm a bit surprised you've never heard a Japanese person say it though. I'd say 3 times this week, and about 1000 times in the past 10 years.

"Japan has four distinct seasons" would be a lot more parse-able. Though given that they have rainy season, "Japan has five distinct seasons" would be more accurate and interesting.

A nice picture. Mt. Daisen is truly beautiful. My wife and I hiked a few years ago.

Wow! Nice picture.

All countries have four seasons even in Iceland.

Nope. Countries on the equator do not have 4 seasons.

Absolutely amazing photo!

Well Done!” to the photographer credited as @karakky0918 Takashi Karaki. Like ‘grapeJapan’, perhaps JT would do well to accept such submissions from their loyal, daily readers ? - (just a suggestion; )

Nice photo. Interesting to see that halfway up, snow is finding it easier to accumulate on grass/weeds on the ground, which should retain heat from summer, but not on tree leaves. The air the leaves are in will probably be colder than the ground. The classic version of this is the other way around, where you get an icey bridge with wet roads on both sides of it. The air below the bridge is colder than the ground below the roads.

There is no doubt that Japan has some very beautiful vista's.

How have I been in Japan almost 25 years and only ever heard it from foreigners?

You need to get out more. :-)

I heard it a lot in my early times in Japan (early 1980s) - probably from people wanting to try out their English and perhaps show off to their friends. As time went on, I heard it less. Perhaps because I'd learned to adopt a less inviting appearance compared to the eager "speak to me" face I had after arriving. I think it's similar in most countries. When you're new anywhere, you get the keen ones wanting to tell you the wonders of their country. In Scotland, you'll get "You must visit Skye." from someone who's probably never been there.

Anyway, although it's a lovely photo, there's a similar light snow boundary right now on the hill in front of my house. No ski lift, but lots of sheep.
