Reactor restart debate swells beyond nuclear frontline

I am so happy to hear that Shiga's voice is getting louder and perhaps will even be heard by KEPCO. There is a very real possibility of damage and contamination to this area if anything went wrong at one of Fukui's many plants (that are more or less safe). I am just hoping that Shiga will stay strong and not take any bribes to influence their willingness to have the plants started up again. There is no need to endanger the largest lake and good farming land that is here in Shiga.

Yes, the rest of Japan needs to wake up too and protest against KEPCO, TEPCO etc..ASAP!!

JP government is now getting it all wrong. It is not people like Edano to convinve others of safety of nuclear energy as their credibility as honest nuclear energy brockers and abitres of truth is long gone. A competent, independent, no-nonsense nuclear safety and security committee set up under the Ministry of environment would may be convince people better. Also, it should be known that the worst case scenario for the Fukushima meltdown would have involved a minimum of 15 prefectures, including Tokyo! Therefore, negotiations with prefectures should be revised such that negotiations should involve prefectures within 100 km, rather than only the prefecture where the nuclear plant is situated. It is therefore a shame to only consider convincing Fukui oipnion leaders and ignore prefectures such as shiga, kyoto, etc that are only 25 km away!!!!!!

Cash, Cash, Cash. They will resort to paying dirty 'under the table' cash to bribe people/business owners to support the restarts. This is Japan after all, where cash is king and business buddies are the queen.

If this summer is as hot as last summer, blackout possibility would be one day (out of 365 days). That’s what the government is talking about possible blackouts. They want to restart controversial Oi NPPs because we would have blackout for just one day (out of 365 days). Which would be more serious damage, one day blackout or nearly forever contamination of Lake Biwa (where Osaka get 90% water from)

How can the government or the utilities promote nuclear power as safe when It /they1.conceals facts and figures from the public regarding deaths and injuries. 2.cannot or does not explain high radioactive readings in major cities such as Tokyo or Yokohama. 3.actively promotes the consumption of potentially contaminated food as it does not have a working system in place to check for radioactive contamination4.do not have the means to decommission a damaged nuclear reactor 5.do not have secure repositories for the storage of thousands of tonnes of live lived dangerous nuclear waste

Nuclear power and the legacy of passes the burden to the next generation(s) - nobody has the right to speak for them!

It is awesome that this is coming out, and every day the foolishness of the Japanese government and electric companies is being shown for what it is -- money grubbing and foolishness. Imagine one of these Fukui prefecture goes back online after 'more or less' meeting standards in three years (they are only preparing for meeting them now) and there is a major catastrophe. Kyoto, Osaka, Fukui, and many other places might be rendered unlivable.

But that's what Edano is willing to risk -- the lives and culture of millions or people and hundreds of years, so he can make a few bucks with his buddies. You remember Kan talking about how horrified he was with the idea that the government might have to evacuate Tokyo? well, you restart those reactors and it's only a matter of time before that horror becomes truth, be it in Tokyo or Osaka, or elsewhere.

Just to think if the Black Ships had not arrived the chain of events that lead to there being nuclear reactors on Japan's Pacific coast would never have woven their disastrous results. Japanese people must understand the natural truth that normally healthy people and healthy firms of living creatures often cannot withstand even the background levels of radiation which has been constantly increasing in proportion to the number of small scale and medium scale accidents and routine releases of radioactivity into the air and water resources and hence the background radioactivity is also increasing day by day and consequently the incidence of cancer rates are also increasing that is why even the eminent experts in Cellular Biology who are experimenting with relationship between doses of radiation from different radionuclides and the impacts of DNA damage on both a single strand and the double strands of the DNA helix. The researchers found that sometimes even the repair mechanisms for doublestrand breaks are failing due to complex interaactions of ultraviolet radiation, x-rays, alpha, beta and gamma rays emitted by different radioactive materials which come under low energy transfer and high energy transfer radioactivity. Hence nobody on earth can certify that any increases in radioactivity caused by manmade sources like the nuclear plants cannot prevent hazards ot public health in the form of increased levels of cancers, mutagens and lowered powers of natural immunity inhumanbeings and all other forms of life. thus the restarting of the nuclear plants by the national government of japan under pressure from the corruption money making nuclear lobbiests, bureaucrats and nuclear plant promoting officials and their contractors and paid agents cannot make nuclear power safe. Infact several studies after Fukushima accident have shown that about 75% of the rector failures are due to human failures and also other manmade causes. In the case of Oi reactors located in a highly earthquake prone zone along the west coast and tsunamis can be expected and consequently the proposed nuclear plants can never be cent percent safe and can be subjected to catastrophic failures which may cost more money in terms of penalising the people by the national governmentof japan to pay for the victims of a potential accident as they did by paying so far about 4 trillion yen for compensation and this compensation payments will be going on increasing year after year by raising the tax collections from the people who are victimised by the routine pollution and accidental pollution from the uncontrollable nuclear power plants. Moreover in debating about the emergency planning zone demarcation from the nuclear plants Japan has set a limit of 30km, France has set a zone of 50km around the nuclear plant while USA has set a limit of 80km radius from the plant and a social welfare state like Finland has set this radius of emergency planning for a distance of 100km from the plant but the Chernobyl accident and Fukushima accident have clearly shown that the damaging impacts will extend to people living at far more distant places extending upto several hundreds of km from the plant.
