Shohei Ohtani deserves most of the credit for the increase.

Maybe this friendship last forever through good and bad times.

I moved back to the US after 20 years living in Japan. I'd say that the positive feelings towards Japan here in the U.S. are very, very high. People only have good things to say about Japan.

Amazing how people just can get their heads around the fact that Japan and many other countries have positive thoughts and feelings about America. Amazing.

American really do care what other think of them

This poll was taken before the U.S. military was roundly blamed spreading Omicron in Japan. I wonder what the number is now. I've certainly noticed a marked increase in evil looks since late December.

Sho, Pfi and Mo perhaps.

Implying that Chinese state media isn't broadcasting anti-US, anti-Japan propaganda daily.

@JFX

Same here, I agree 100%. EVERYONE in the US seems to like Japan. Even the rednecks I know have good things to say about Japan. I only lived there for 5 years, but I have family ties and go back every year (or at least I did until 2 years ago). When it comes up in conversation EVERYONE makes very positive and somewhat informed comments about Japan, even though most have never been. I've actually know a few people who've said they want to go but don't know how to get started, and coached them through how easy it is (and how it's not nearly as expensive as one would think "if you follow this and that advice", and they actually went and had a blast.

I'm not sure why you got the downvotes, JFX, though I suspect there are some commenters (who never comment) here who have logins for the sole purpose of going from story to story to downvote every comment.

The majority of Japanese people aren’t racist or hate foreigners but the country has a xenophobia problem due to their government spread of fear to wathever is foreign, especially these days

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

The figure is up 4.5 percentage points from the previous survey a year ago, according to the Cabinet Office survey, which also found that around 85 percent of respondents see ties between Japan and China as "not good" or "not really good."

Cabinet Office surveys aren't intended to reflect public opinion but to shape it. All results to be taken with a shovelful of salt.

reflecting strengthened ties between the allies in such areas as security and the economy.

yep Japanese economy is horrid and now the US economy has joined them.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

I think Japanese like Europe more, but understand without the U.S. behind them they would still be a 3rd world country.

-6 ( +4 / -10 )

Japan, concerned about human rights issues? Gimme a break.

And you can also substitute 'Japan' with 'USA'

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

In my 30+ year experience with Japanese people, I find the more educated, middle-class types prefer Europe, especially people who harbor artistic ambitions like painters and classical music aficionados, or those interested in architecture. Indeed, there's a huge cohort of Japanese women (often they play a musical instrument to a high level such as piano or violin) who are obssessed with Europe, especially France, Austria, etc.

OTOH, the ones into America and Americana tend to be lower down the socio-economic scale, less educated, more into things like surfing, extreme sports, DJing, rock n roll music, military stuff, and just plain old money making through business.

No one in the world loves the USA more than Japanese - with the possible exception of Israelis.

Record 88% of Japanese 'feel friendly' toward US :

The incessant national propaganda, under relentless coaxing and coercion of US, appear to be 'successful'.

After all, their 'friendliness' evolves from having a few common enemies, imagined or otherwise..

LOL.

I don’t have a lot of positive feelings about America. And I’m from Florida.

Record 88% of Japanese 'feel friendly' toward U.S..

Why would 88% of Japanese people think otherwise?

Feel friendly?

This must be a podium position for the most absurd and incomprehensible survey since celerity dog names.

I am a rare person who doesn't like US, C, K and R all 4 countries. In the last 10 years these 4 countries have only brought harm and bad news for Japan. Hope US goes down and also K liking decreases more. This isn't good.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

For all the faults in both countries, it is good that we can get along and actually "like" each other. There is an inter-dependence between both countries.
