Record-breaking rainfall drenches Shimane

Record-breaking rainfall inundated Shimane Prefecture on Saturday, with more rain forecast for Sunday.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said that more than 400 millimeters of rain fell throughout the day. In three hours in the afternoon, 250 millimeters fell -- equal to the average rainfall for eight months in a normal year.

Agency officials said Saturday's torrential rain was even greater than the deluge that hit the prefecture on July 28, Fuji TV reported.

The agency said the heavy rain front is being caused by higher sea temperatures and a tropical depression that is hovering over Shimane and Yamaguchi prefectures.

The agency warned of further floods and mudslides.
