Wow - good on the locals to aid the distressed.

Certainly some yahoo will soon post this as contravening global warming. A reminder: The past eight years were the eight warmest on record.

Saw these scenes on TV earlier today along with convenience stores not getting deliveries. Nice to see people helping each other out.

We might be in for a long winter. Take care all.

Five and a half hour bus ride yesterday because the trains were out. At least I wasn’t stuck in a vehicle. No chance I’ll visit in winter again.

The truck drivers are accustomed to dealing with the heavy snow but the drivers in cars leave themselves exposed to freezing overnight temperatures.

Snow in that area can be 2-3 meters deep. Somedays had to climb out the second floor to get out and clear the snow from the door.

I'm asking this sincerely, but why does this kind of thing happen virtually every.single.year? I grew up in a place with heavy snow and have the experience of being whited out on highways, but we went to the nearest exit and found a hotel and were fine. Do people just think it won't happen to them? We were the only ones on the highway and figured we were foolish, learned our lesson....

i am waiting reasonable explanation from some local global warming expert...because I believe that global warming looks a bit different?

The truck drivers can't exit and stay in some hotels. Drivers do not get allowances for hotels and sleep in their trucks.

This is the first time I've heard Niigata referred to as "northwest Japan". I've never heard that before.

This is unusual microclimates at work. Urban parts of Niigata have been dumped on, Kashiwazaki is by the coast, but there is little snow up at the ski resorts at Myoko, usually the snowiest bit.

I’ve always thought that “warming” was an inappropriate word to use. “Climate change”, though the degree of human influence has been suggested but not proven, is a better description.

Extremely sad end for the 85-year old man, falls into a drain and freezes to death....... massive miscalculation to go out during these conditions up there in Niigata.

Largest nuclear plants in the world are located on Niigata prefecture.

Optimistic nuclear safety standard of Japan that don't investigate even practicability of evacuation plans avoid to even assume situation that cannot use evacuation route like this.

B.C. South Coast residents urged to stay home as heavy snow chokes roads, cancels flights and ferries

Authorities across B.C.'s South Coast are urging residents to stay home on Tuesday after a rare, major snowfall choked virtually every avenue of transportation, from grounded flights at the airport to jammed traffic on the roads.

Heaps of blowing snow and unusually frigid temperatures swept the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island overnight and through the morning, leaving up to 30 centimetres of fresh powder in some elevated residential areas.

That's what you call "no snow in Canada"?

An even more appropriate term would be "seasonal weather", as it always has been, and will be. Of course that isn't scary enough for the alarmists.

I’ve always thought that “warming” was an inappropriate word to use. “Climate change”, though
