I wonder why the headline wasn't "Three Chinese naval vessels which did not enter Japan's territorial waters nor take action to pose any threat to MSDF ships or planes spotted in waters near Japan"

in view of the emphasis on "large" destroyer, I guess size does matter...

since destroyers are, in essence, 'minders' for other types of ship, I presume that those minded are of more significance? wonder what the other two mentioned here were about....

The article could just as easily stated, close to Korea or close to China and eventually close to Russia.

I disagree. This is just like US/UK Freedom of Navigation runs.

As long as they don't come closer than 12nm to Japanese land without Japan's approval and don't fish in the Japanese EEZ, they are perfectly within their rights.

If they enter Japanese waters, not recognizing Japan's claim on the disputed islands (which Japan won't take to the ICJ!) then Japan has a serious dilemma; they can apparently now fire on such vessels, but doing so would be a full-on act of war in China's eyes, and they would take over the islands permanently, establishing a foothold within what Japan considers its borders. And Japan would be helpless.

Sailing in international waters is fine, its what ships do, US ships, Japanese ships and in this case Chinese ships. Now if the Chinese military vessels were in Tokyo bay it would be different.

The ships sailed between Tsushima and Korea, which is really the main international passage into the Sea of Japan and Vladivostok. No idea what the Chinese intentions are - if any. But it's pretty clear the media has been told to play it up and stoke the flames against China among ordinary Japanese.

North of Kyushu Island close to where the CFAS Sasebo is and readying for deployment or some ships in deployment and out and about. Parts unknown.

Left MCAS iwakuni the CAG and where F-35's are kept.

Right is CFAS Sasebo. So what you have is three Chinese vessels 259 KM with in reaching CFAS Sasebo.

And 379 KM from reaching MCAS Iwakuni. With its armaments from current last known position.

The primary armament on these class off Chinese ships are missiles carried in 112 universal vertical launch cells (VLS) And 64 cells forward and 48 cells aft. The same VLS model is used on the Type 052D destroyer which is believed to be an implementation of the GJB 5860-2006. The longest variant, with 9-metre cells, is likely used. The Type 055 is expected to carry HHQ-9 surface-to-air missiles, YJ-18 anti-ship cruise missiles, CJ-10 land-attack cruise missiles, and missile-launched anti-submarine torpedoes upon entering service. Potentially, the larger cells may also carry anti-ship ballistic missiles.

Ask any XO of any American or US ship stationed in Japan and they will tell you straight formattable battle class destroyers and no push overs for AGEIS destroyers. I would feel much better knowing the USS Port Royal or the USS Princeton was around.

No this is a major provocation on the sovereignty of Japan and should be treated as such.

Its is something to worry about and I expect the Japanese government are preparing a strong protest of words.

That doesn’t play a role so much, as both positions are nearer to Tsushima than Busan. It’s just another clear provocation even if not intruding but ‘only’ irritating up to the maximum possible point. How would anybody of you react, if a team of thieves patrols before your entrance door or before your window of the living room, not intruding and stealing, but just waiting for your reaction or an error you could make, for example not closing the bedroom windows? lol

Exactly. Doesn't matter if it is off the coast of Korea, China, Japan, US, Chile, UK, Spain, Turkey, India, South Africa, Russia ... 12nm is 12nm. International waters.

Now, if they are in the EEZ for any country besides their own, then they can't dig or fish - not even 1 hook out the back of the ship.

The same applies to the Japanese fishing fleet spread around the world. Stay outside EEZs to fish.
