ActPro opened an office in Yonaguni last year and began its tour business in November, with one of its featured offerings being the cave exploration tour conducted by a licensed guide.

Licensed by whom? Seems to me they dont know the area to get into trouble like that.

Yonaguni Island is located closer to Taiwan, at a distance of around 110 kilometers, than it is to the prefecture's main island of Okinawa, 510 km away.

And this plus ¥1,000 will get you a cup of coffee at Starbuck's. So what does it have to do with the loss of a guys life here?

A very nice place indeed, that far away island... And of course they have very skilled professional divers and instructors there, I've seen them myself, and also the boat tours , with or without diving activities, are all very exceptional splendid , skilled and processed professionally. If you find time and money, Yonaguni is one of the finest spots in Japan, I strongly recommend it.

What brought the rise in water? Did it rain? Is this something that happens regularly in this cave, implying negligence by the operator, or was it a freak accident that could not be planned for?

Sounds like they forgot to account for the tide.

Facepalm !

There's this thing they call the ocean - perhaps you've heard of it ?

Why the facepalm? Is there something in the article that says this is because of tides? If not, then how do you know it was due to tides and not rain or something?

Like most licences here, obtaining one is mostly a case of memorisation, rather than common sense and real local knowledge.

I have prevented a few potential accidents by suggesting that 'surf guides' better not take their clients out on low tide coral reefs.

This was on Mezamashi news this AM. 2 things, this tour operator offers 2 tours, the "A" tour is a dry caves tour, but the "B" tour is through water and can be dangerous. The cave flooded due to a thunder storm that passed through the area.

Their site is off line right now
