Really, it was a well planned and executed attack. If it happened today "mission accomplished". It was a tactical success but the strategy was wrong. Midway was the blunder that let the US back in the war.

Iirc Yamamoto knew exactly what would happen but was ordered to do it anyway. He knew that if they made the attack on Pearl Harbor it would give the Japanese about a year to do whatever they wanted in the Pacific and Asia. After that the proverbial s would hit the fan and they were bound to lose. It was a classic case of “The boss wants to do this stupid thing, shouganai.”

I concur with Dougan Nash. Although not a confirmed direct quote, he knew Japan will be defeated if they entered into war with the US.

It is not only Japanese thing. Every military man who swears an oath to his country must obey orders from superiors.

I visited the Nagaoka museum once. It is not big, but very interesting, and the staff is very friendly. I was the sole visitor that day and they gave me all the attention.

@DougonNash exactly Yamamoto knew it was not going to end well, and argued against the attack, but the boss is always right? The attack on Pearl harbour missed the Aircraft carriers, thay were a decisive factor on what followed. So I'd argue the attack was an utter failure. Big Suprise but futile. General Yamamoto Admiral was a smart man overruled buy idiots...and so it continues to this day.

Admiral Yamamoto was against the attack from the very beginning.

strategic blunder too. He missed important ships of the fleet.
