Well, Americans have have been in Okinawa for many many years but it doesn't stop the Chinese from entering the Japanese waters does it? In fact the one doing all the works of warning the Chinese is the Japanese coast guards themselves.

Of course the Japanese Coast Guard are the ones giving the warnings. It's in Japanese waters, it's their job. The US military being right around the corner is the reason that the Chinese don't stay in Japanese waters.

According to the Okinawa Pref. home page, U.S. Military facilities take up 10.1% of Okinawa Pref. but 18.2% of the land on the Main Island of Okinawa. U.S. Military Facilities take up 19.6% of the land in the Northern Area, 23.1% of the land in the Central Area and 0.6% of the land in the Southern Area of the Main Island.

The fact is that the U.S. Military Bases take up large chunks of land in central locations on Okinawa and to pretend that they are small bases that are located so far out of the way that you have to drive for hours to find them is disingenuous.

For those who seem to NEVERENDINGLY complain about American military bases in Okinawa:

"Emergency Landing" rather than "crash landed" should have been stated in the first reporting of this incident on Japan Today. No doubt it was a combination of anti-US and sensationalism reporting. And kudos to the pilot who flew the helicopter AWAY from populated areas and managed to land it on a beach.

Yet, there are those . . . that do not want to know the truth.

Or rather wants to obfuscate the facts and through anti-U.S. propaganda play on the fears and emotions.

The bases account for less than 8% of the land used in Okinawa, you AGAIN conveniently forget to include the history behind why the bases are here in the first place.

That's an interesting statistical fact that is often obfuscatated by the anti-U.S. comrades. From their histrionic propaganda, they would have you believe those 13 U.S. military bases occupies 92% of Okinawan land and are there illegally.

As to why there are more U.S. military bases on Okinawa than on Japan, look at a map of the region and we find Okinawa is in close proximity to the East China Seas, Senkaku Islands and Taiwan, where the next international hotspot crisis will soon occur. When China asserts itself militarily in that region, by occupying the Senkaku islands and establishing a military base there, or invading Taiwan, the U.S. can respond much quicker from Okinawa than from Guam.

And what's to keep China from eventually claiming the Ryukyu Islands afterwards? Right now they say they won't claim, but after the U.S. military leaves Okinawa, they will.

The helicopter did not fall out of the sky. The truth is the pilot safely landed the helicopter in a most professional manner - with no danger to anyone. Yet, there are those . . . that do not want to know the truth.

""If an aircraft falls on our houses..."

Odds are higher that you will get hit by a drunk driver while you cross the street in front of your home in Okinawa than have an aircraft fall on your house.

Not complaining about the handouts for housing the bases, either.

Unless he owns base land, and living on Ikei Island pretty much would suggest he doesn't, would mean he gets nothing in handouts, nor do the majority of people living here either. Everything is pretty much indirect compensation that the government uses for it's pet projects.

Tell me smithinjapan why there is 13 U.S. Military Bases on Okinawa and only 8 U.S. Bases in all of Mainland Japan? Why do the U.S. Marines need 8 bases on Okinawa?

The bases account for less than 8% of the land used in Okinawa, you AGAIN conveniently forget to include the history behind why the bases are here in the first place.

You AGAIN play on emotions, and obfuscate the issues with your comments. It's not about "numbers".

@ZENJI

Yes, they do but they just don't get publicized as crazily like they do in Okinawa because there's no political end state behind the publicity in the US. An example would be when CH-53 made an emergency on a public beach in San Diego, CA about two years ago or when a MV-22 had a hard landing on the USS New Orleans last year.

Another incident involving a U S military aircraft. A safe outcome this time thankfully.

Tell me someone. Do these kinds of incidents happen back in the states?

Generally at the first sign of a possible problem with the rotor system the pilot will land the aircraft as soon as possible, it is considered an emergency landing but in this case it was obviously carried out with full control of the aircraft and nobodies life was in danger on the ground as the problem originated over water and the spot they chose to land was unoccupied.

Opponents to the U.S military in Okinawa glean every opportunity to overreact to any incident no matter how benign, apparently forgetting the numerous events over the course of history in which JSDF aircraft have crashed killing civilians and destroying homes.

smithinjapan:

A Canadian living in Osaka who knows nothing about the U.S. Military Bases on Okinawa but who is always making disparaging remarks about the people of Okinawa. Tell me smithinjapan why there is 13 U.S. Military Bases on Okinawa and only 8 U.S. Bases in all of Mainland Japan? Why do the U.S. Marines need 8 bases on Okinawa? Why does the U.S. Military need 4 golf courses on Okinawa? Why do the people of Okinawa, one of the smallest and poorest prefectures in Japan, have to bear such a large burden for the defense of Japan?

“emergency landing “ or “crash landed” - for people in Okinawa it wont make much difference, its this week's proof that the US army is flying junk over their heads and the Japan Gov. puppets have nothing to say as they as shadow state minions.

""If an aircraft falls on our houses..."

Did it? Nope. If a commercial airliner falls on your house it'll cause even MORE damage, and definitely death. Are they complaining about that? Nope. Not complaining about the handouts for housing the bases, either.

Happy to see “emergency landing “ rather than the “crash landed” that was incorrectly used last time.

I'm glad no one was hurt. Hats off to the pilot for making the right call.
