An activity which has been happening for hundreds of year and you expect it to stop, not possible, a new approach is needed in reducing crowds simultaneously. think outside of the box.

Where is the proof that the virus is spread in the open air?

There is none...

-19 ( +20 / -39 )

What do they expect? They’ve spent months focussed on karaoke places, bars, and izakayas after 9pm as the root cause of the spread. The ‘State of Emergency’ was largely related to these places and activities in the evenings. They then request people not to hold parties under the trees - again implying that drinking alcohol and sitting together is the issue.

It seems people have computed all this and thought - well there’s nothing wrong with me getting on a train and travelling out to the park and taking some photos with the trees. I won’t drink alcohol, I won’t sit on any blue tarp, I’ll go home after... well maybe after some shopping while I’m already out.

Oh and it’s a major traditional activity on the Japanese calendar. So again, what on earth did they expect?

8 ( +11 / -3 )

If you're outdoors and wearing a mask, I think the risk is low. If you go out to an Izakaya after, good luck.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

I’m pretty sure the population has several thousand photos of this rare blossom on their phones, in a pandemic situation could be time to sit at home and reminisce looking at the last decade of photos rather then take more wearing a mask.

2 ( +9 / -7 )

But they are preventing is sitting around hanami-ing and getting drunk.

That was until 2 years ago.

Last year and this year nobody is doing that, because alcohol is forbidden in Cherry Blossom Areas.

-20 ( +3 / -23 )

They should let people celebrate the country's victory over the virus. Just keep the foreigners away and things will be fine.

-6 ( +10 / -16 )

Takes no time flat to find evidence.

Indoor transmission is much more important, but that doesn't mean being outdoors makes it impossible, specially if people are in close proximity without masks and drinking/eating.

Japan has NOT had a relatively small outbreak -- Taiwan has... with ONE death. Japan is also the worst tester and slowest to vaccinate. Now, add to this people like Aso saying git's "Mindou" that has had Japan see lower rates than other nations (again, untrue with regards to neighbours), and people like those going out to see the cherry blossoms say, "It is a unique Japanese custom, and even though there is a virus, not being able to do hanami cannot be tolerated. Besides, I'm just doing it this once, it'll be less people than normal, I'm sure, and then having lunch and doing some shopping, and then I'll meet friends for drinks and then go out for dinner and come home. The virus should respect my stoicism!"

9 ( +19 / -10 )

I went to see them yesterday and there was not many people out and about. Then again I live in a city where people listen and the city is small...it was a beautiful day!

-10 ( +5 / -15 )

Another example of tradition and common sense in conflict. In Japan, common sense will ALWAYS lose.

13 ( +17 / -4 )

Everyday people care less and less.

Hopefully this stupidity will all be over soon.

-6 ( +8 / -14 )

So much for the narrative that Japanese are responsible etc.

For me this is everything but not responsible.

I don’t know if these people think that because of their genes they are immune of the Covid but it’s frankly preoccupying.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

Tokyo can look forward to another wave of Covid. Yes, it has been happening for hundreds of years. It happens every year. Surely one year without the obligatory cherry blossom selfie would not destroy Japanese culture. “Ignorance can be cured, but stupidity can not.”

13 ( +15 / -2 )

ot compared to any of its peers in Asia, nor any of it's geographic peers (island nation with a non-porous border).

You’re comparing apples to oranges. And you’re like a broken record constantly repeating this.

Viruses and diseases! That’s the way nature deals with animal overpopulation. The strong human bodies will adapt and mutate. The weak wither and die. It’s natural evolution. Live your life you the way you want it’s short.

That is a very primitive understanding of adaptation and evolution, viruses are much more likely to mutate to adapt towards less pathogenic infection without humans having to undergo any mutation, body strength is irrelevant to human survival since immemorial times because the adaptive "strategy" of the species is based on variety of genomes instead of focusing on a narrow spectrum to survive one single change in the environment.

Intelligence is what lets the humanity learn and adapt with conduct to diseases, making life less short and more productive, immediate gratification as an absolute priority leads to much less enjoyment overall (and less life to enjoy things).

Long ago? Has domestic tourism rebounded since this decision by the public that it’s over? How about retail sales? I was under the impression they have taken serious hits because of public reluctance to act like this is over.

I genuinely hope you can back up your fact and are not just running with a narrative based on a story about people going to see cherry blossoms.

It certainly wasn’t educated in any form. Educated people don’t run with narratives.

No fear here. Just a genuine hope that you could bring us some good news about the industries battered by a reluctance from the public to act as if this is over. Should have known better.

I went for a walk to see the cherry blossoms the other day. Almost everyone I saw was wearing masks. Strange behaviour from the public who decided this was over a long time ago.

Did you bother looking at the data?

You really should of give a link

From your Pubmed link below...

There was high heterogeneity in study quality and individual definitions of outdoor settings, which limited our ability to draw conclusions about outdoor transmission risks.

And as I said there is NO conclusive data as I posted before yet people believe it to be true due to the brainwashing going on..

Despite a third wave of COVID-19 infections over the winter, Japan has had a comparatively small outbreak overall with around 9,000 deaths and has not imposed the blanket lockdowns seen in other countries.

People are just living their life here according to the rules set by the state of emergency now set back to 9pm. They'll probably move it up to 8pm again if the numbers rise again.

If they were really worried about the spread of COVID they would have shut down all Osaka, Nagoya, Tokyo train routes

Osaka, Nagoya, Tokyo should have been the highest in the world for COVID but they are not vs the rest of the world. ZERO "social distance" breathing each others exhaled air through their "protective" masks. Masks don't work if the air passes through the sides. May capture some particles but you already know you're just wearing it to make the other person feel better.

So if they never shut down the train routes why are you worried about hanami?

You shouldn't be. If you've been to any ramen ya then you know those areas should be shut down too but they are not. Zero masks, shoulder-to-shoulder, ramen slurping going on all day long across the entire nation from noon to evening. OMG - so scary! Lockdown! Run for the hills! Instead....business as usual.

-7 ( +5 / -12 )

"We fear there may be a sudden spread of infections -- bigger than the third wave -- if the number of people going out increases, as it does each year with cherry blossom viewing, welcome parties (for new employees and students) and graduation trips," said Norio Ohmagari, director of Japan's Disease Control and Prevention Center, on Thursday.

Third wave, Fourth wave....Tenth wave....cases will go up and cases will go down until natural herd immunity and the virus will fizzle out with everyone already producing natural antibodies. No need for any injectable nyquil (although Pharma would beg to differ and say who knows how long your "natural antibodies last" - you must inject 2-3 times per year indefinitely).

-8 ( +4 / -12 )

You keep copy-pasting the same comment, even when it can be proved wrong every time with the same arguments, There is absolutely nothing wrong with putting in place effective measures against spreading if the cases increase again, that is precisely what they are meant to be preventing, of course it is better to use them before the cases increase, but reacting is still much better than doing nothing.

Trains DO have measures in place, people are wearing masks, not talking constantly and specially not consuming food or beverages as a rule, science deniers really want people to believe being in a party and riding a train are the same thing, but this is obviously false.

Mask DO work, even if they are not perfectly fit, because their role is to decrease the amount of virus that a person is exposed to, the better the fit the more of this effect, but any reduction is valuable, it has been proved scientifically even if you try very hard to ignore the studies.

Also, there is no inherent advantage of getting antibodies naturally compared with getting them with a vaccine, and a huge disadvantage: it is hugely more risky. There is no scientific data that indicates any kind of reinforcement for the vaccine is necessary, much less the exaggerated "2-3 per year indefinitely" that antivaxxers like to pull out of the air.

3 ( +9 / -6 )

From your Pubmed link below...

There was high heterogeneity in study quality and individual definitions of outdoor settings, which limited our ability to draw conclusions about outdoor transmission risks.

Yes, that is called being intellectually honest, this means that concluding exactly how important outside transmission is would not be valid, but what the data proves without doubt is that it do exist and accounts for some of the cases being observed.

This is of course completely enough to prove your comment of "Where is the proof that the virus is spread in the open air? There is none..." Is false. There is plenty of proof that the virus can be spread in open air, even if this proof is not enough to precisely quantify its importance.

0 ( +7 / -7 )

People in Tokyo flocked to admire cherry blossoms in full bloom at parks, shrines and rivers on Friday, despite coronavirus warnings against holding traditional parties under the delicate flowers.

We can't have people out in the outdoors / open air for hanami right? Oh no! The open air! Fear of transmission even if you have a mask on (does air pass through the sides? Then it doesn't work)! The "Experts" worry about cases going up! (and then they go down...crickets) "Hide your kids! Hide your wife!" But we can be out in the open air for business / work / office environment.

C'mon son! If you lived your life according to pharma controlled media you'd lock yourself and each of your family members in a separate box indefinitely. No more cherry blossoms until 2030.

If you are really living in fear of COVID then you shouldn't take the subway to work...EVER. Those are the highest risk supposed hot spots (according to pharma based science detailed "risks"). Yet people still bunched up face-to-face, shoulder-to-shoulder like sardines in a can with exhaled air mixed in at every station along the route throughout Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, etc. Those train lines are your super spreaders! And yet, they are not. Subways never shut down since this whole thing began over 1 year now.

End of the world should have happened already in Japan right? It must have been the nattou (Kantou) & okonomiyaki (Kansai) or misokatsu (Nagoya). Naw...it's gotta be the EGCG in green tea nationwide (definitely helps though).

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

So when people prove you are wrong and that the scientific consensus can contradict your mistaken opinion with data your argument is just to copy paste the comment again?

I have terribly bad news, but if your opinion could be proved mistaken a few minutes back, that still means it is mistaken even if you repeat it again, masks still work, there are still hygienic and social distancing measures being used in public transport the experts still know more about the pandemic than someone that obviously do not listen to the science.

You could copy-paste the same comment a hundred times and it would be still wrong, a big hint is that you cannot contradict arguments that prove it mistaken and can only repeat it again.

Yeah...Pharma's talking about a worldwide pandemic and that we need to keep masks glued on forever (smell 2nd hand smoke? Then not effective) and also prevent people from going outdoors until you take their jab x 2.

CDC's own multi-million dollar study on masks over major cities/counties all over the US (over several months from 2020) shows exactly how effective masks are (not):

https://thehighwire.com/videos/del-debunks-cdc-mask-spin/

Sakura selfie? No need. I'd be glad to take that shot for you.

Please use the copy and paste function and direct your comments to posters by name using the’@‘-not doing so makes it difficult to understand your posts.

My point is to make clear I discuss arguments independently of the people that make them, that is why the quote is enough.

Replying to the poster immediately before is not confusing, so even that can be dispensed.

For example, if anybody keeps copy-pasting a comment about the CDC study making a bad misrepresentation there is no confusion if I reply that this is false. In the first place because the effects of mask use and mask mandates are two very different things (a mask mandate in Tokyo would be useless... because everybody is already using masks so it would not increase the people using them, but at the same time mask use is still a very effective measure as proved by many studies, including the CDC study that is being misrepresented.

So much that the authors do write in their conclusions:

"Mask mandates and restricting any on-premises dining at restaurants can help limit community transmission of COVID-19 and reduce case and death growth rates. These findings can inform public policies to reduce community spread of COVID-19."

Normally hanami is cloudy over the years but this week has been great with blue skies and comfortable temperatures. Can't imagine a better time to enjoy the outdoors and the changing of the seasons.

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

Indoor transmission is much more important, but that doesn't mean being outdoors makes it impossible, specially if people are in close proximity without masks and drinking/eating.

Indeed, it is not impossible to transmit the virus outdoors. It is also not impossible to get run over on your way there...

If one wants to meet friends, why not go to a hanami, since "indoor transmission is much more important".

Great weather for cherry blossoms time to get out and about grab some beers with friends and embrace the day...If you worried about covid stay home nobody will miss you...

Well said. Nobody is being forced to go to the hanami. But people should be allowed to take that very small risk of catching the virus. If we are allowed to get on a crowed train, why not also be allowed to enjoy a hanami. Now is a perfect chance to naturally boost our vitamin D levels in the sun while improving our mental health.

-3 ( +6 / -9 )

Indeed, it is not impossible to transmit the virus outdoors. It is also not impossible to get run over on your way there...

If one wants to meet friends, why not go to a hanami, since "indoor transmission is much more important".

That is of course an invalid mischaracterization, there are sensible and easy to follow precautions to avoid getting run over that people use to reduce the risk to manageable levels.

On the other side to avoid the risk of transmission (even outdoors) the measures that people can follow are being ignored (not talking, not taking out their masks, not eating drinking in close proximity of each other) so the only realistic way to reduce the risk is to prohibit the congregations in the first place.

For your example to be actually applicable it would be necessary to see everybody around ignoring completely the traffic laws, thus making it impossible otherwise to reduce the risk of accidents.

If we are allowed to get on a crowed train, why not also be allowed to enjoy a hanami.

Because the huge difference in activity, you are not allowed to have parties neither in a crowded train nor in a park, but people find much more easy to obey in the first situation than in the second.

There are many other ways to safely take sunlight without increasing the risk of infection.

Can't imagine a better time to enjoy the outdoors and the changing of the seasons.

That is the problem with actively disregarding the science, it makes easier to make mistaken conclusions because you are not taking in account the reality of the situation. For anybody it would be easier to imagine a better time, specifically without an active pandemic with an expected rise in cases.

4 ( +9 / -5 )

From your response, it seems that you are just opposed to people having fun with friends; i.e., no fun until everyone gets their vaccine.

That is false, read again the comment, I am opposed to people disregarding scientifically proved measures that reduce the spreading of the disease. If people were able to enjoy having fun with proper social distancing measures there would be no problem, but if people insist of putting others at risk with their actions at this specific locations there is nothing strange with authorities intervening to reduce it. People are still able to have fun with friends in countless other ways that do not increase the risk of infection, even without vaccines.

5 ( +10 / -5 )

Viruses and diseases! That’s the way nature deals with animal overpopulation. The strong human bodies will adapt and mutate. The weak wither and die. It’s natural evolution. Live your life you the way you want it’s short.

Yes, our immune system normally adapts as it is constantly exposed to countless pathogens. But we are no longer getting this now with constant mask wearing, sanitizers, and social distancing. Our immune system is truly amazing, and it's a shame that so many will end up throwing a monkey wrench into the whole thing by getting a vaccine.

-7 ( +2 / -9 )

nd it's a shame that so many will end up throwing a monkey wrench into the whole thing by getting a vaccine.

That is just an irrational belief disproved by science, vaccines do no such a thing and that is why the pandemic is now such a big deal instead of the normal situation with pathogens as it were before the vaccines.

On the other hand the natural infection is the one that validly be said that throws a wrench in the immunity process, by exposing the body to a million times more antigens than any vaccine, including viral proteins produced precisely to disrupt the immune system to let the virus grow.

5 ( +10 / -5 )

Third wave, Fourth wave....Tenth wave....cases will go up and cases will go down until natural herd immunity and the virus will fizzle out with everyone already producing natural antibodies

and those antibodies are produced once immunised and stay a lot longer than a year, thats the science back by facts, now herd immunity is between 70~80% of the population infected, with a fatality rate of between 1.8~3% depending which country statistics youre sighting, for a country like Japan youre looking at around 1.6million ~ 3million dead, remembering over 30% of Japans population are over 65 and a high risk group.

No Japan hasnt even come close to herd immunity because of social distancing and masks, but immunisations is the far safer and quicker way for the population to become immune.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

with a fatality rate of between 1.8~3% depending which country statistics youre sighting, for a country like Japan youre looking at around 1.6million ~ 3million dead,

Yeah, it's around 2% for Japan, but that is if you only consider the confirmed infections. Considering the low testing numbers that many here have been complaining about, there is no way the confirmed infection number is anywhere near the actual infection number.

Regardless of what the actual fatality rate is, going out in the sun will definitely help to decrease that rate.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

The same sad poster(s) on here trying in vain to keep their faux titles as "experts" while the state of Texas singlehandedly destroyed their entire narrative.

That is the problem with pretending to be experts, contradicting the conclusions from articles, saying without proof that scientists and doctors diagnose patient wrong, etc. Specially bad is when other people prove them wrong with articles and their only defense is pretending they cannot read them.

Regardless of what the actual fatality rate is, going out in the sun will definitely help to decrease that rate.

A source would be necessary to prove this, after you have said that the elder population in Japan have such low mortality because of their adequate levels of vitamin D, even when young people have higher levels.

Not forgetting that there are safe and convenient ways of going out in the sun without increasing the risk of infection drinking and eating in close proximity of others.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

..If you worried about covid stay home nobody will miss you...

The flimsy paper mask brigade, who constantly touch their masks and fail to wear eye protection will be angry with you.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

A source would be necessary to prove this, after you have said that the elder population in Japan have such low mortality because of their adequate levels of vitamin D, even when young people have higher levels.

When we previously had this discussion, I had stated that the vitamin D levels in the Japanese female elders (perhaps due to higher fish consumption) were much higher than in the Italian ones, and that I believe this difference played an important role in the difference in death rates. You responded with references to completely unrelated studies; only one paper actually addressed vitamin D in the Japanese elders and their conclusion did not support your statements.

You have consistently resisted the idea of vitamin D having any positive effects against Covid19 despite the many studies that support it.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

You responded with references to completely unrelated studies; only one paper actually addressed vitamin D in the Japanese elders and their conclusion did not support your statements.

Of course it did, https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16369890/

The article demonstrate that the levels considered "normal" for Japanese people are much lower than what is considered normal for the European population, and since the inactive elders are the segment of the population that has the lowest levels that can only mean those low levels are enough (according to you) to explain the low number of deaths observed in Japan.

My skepticism is about you endlessly repeating that vitamin D will always have a positive effect against COVID-19, which is not what science says, The scientific consensus is that correcting dietary deficiencies is the one that have a positive effect, if the population has adequate levels there is no value in increasing them more, and that according to you most of the Japanese population already have adequate levels (since the segment with the lowest levels is not "dying much" compared with other countries).

2 ( +6 / -4 )

My skepticism is about you endlessly repeating that vitamin D will always have a positive effect against COVID-19, which is not what science says, The scientific consensus is that correcting dietary deficiencies is the one that have a positive effect, if the population has adequate levels there is no value in increasing them more,

In the past, recommended vitD levels were very low, basically to avoid rickets. But we now understand that vitD has many other very important roles and its optimal level is much higher than what was once thought, although many are slow to accept this. Many in the west have insufficient vitamin D levels according to these new reccomendations. A very high proportion of blacks in the US have low vitD, and as you know they are disproportionately affected by covid.

In winter, most of us have insufficient vitD and would benefit from supplementation or careful dietary considerations. Many believe low vitamin D levels are a major determinant of the timing of the yearly flu season and the current covid19 "waves".

Going out in the sun is a good way to naturally increase our vitD levels, thus protecting us from covid.

I know you like throwing around the term "scientific consensus", but here is a list of studies that support the benefits of vitD: https://c19vitamind.com/

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

In the past, recommended vitD levels were very low, basically to avoid rickets. But we now understand that vitD has many other very important roles and its optimal level is much higher than what was once thought, although many are slow to accept this

That includes Japan, and since you propose that the Japanese population is protected from high death rates because they have "adequate" levels that means you accept those extremely low levels by international standards are actually enough.

According you your own suppositions there is no point in supplementing vitamin D to Japanese because the segment of the population where it is found the lowest is already protected. You have proved yourself wrong.

I know you like throwing around the term "scientific consensus", but here is a list of studies that support the benefits of vitD: https://c19vitamind.com/

Half of those studies do exactly what I told you, recommend sufficiency, without proof of any benefit with levels above it, the other half are just non peer reviewed manuscripts, which makes them equivalent to PDFs that some people write (not even been authenticated by any editorial services).

Do you know what do you need to show what is the scientific consensus? links to official positions of scientific and medical professional organizations, and again not recommending the correction of dietary insufficiency but an effect of levels above that.

Not being able to find them would clearly indicate your belief is not the scientific consensus.

People in Tokyo enjoy cherry blossoms despite virus warning

So now this virus, which previously became dangerous after 8pm until it changed its mind to 9pm now hangs out around cherry blossoms.

When will people finally get tired of this nonsense.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

didou

For you guys who can not or do not want to enjoy the real cherry blossom, there are a lot of online Hanamis a this year. Enjoying the whole country Hanami from the sofa

....while being deprived of sunshine, movement, and fresh air, and probably munch junk food. You do realize that degrading peoples health by keeping them indoors is one of the best aids to help this virus, or is that new to you?

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

You do realize that degrading peoples health by keeping them indoors is one of the best aids to help this virus

How exactly? people can have a healthy and productive live indoors without problems, and they will be less exposed to the virus. That is not an aid for it, more like the opposite.

But never mind that, there are a lot of activities that can be done ouside without increasing the risk, so you make a false dichotomy. The only thing that should be avoided is to congregate in close proximity with people of other households while speaking loudly, singing, eating, drinking. If people had no trouble avoiding this while visiting the sakura parks there would be no need to close them, but obviously they have, so they will have to choose any of the endless other activities they can perform safely outside.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

....while being deprived of sunshine, movement, and fresh air, and probably munch junk food. You do realize that degrading peoples health by keeping them indoors is one of the best aids to help this virus, or is that new to you?

Exactly. Pharma knows that and they want you to live in fear....em...."caution" while even masking indoors, masking while driving, masking while showering, masking while swimming. Don't hug your kids, don't hug your spouse because they might have it. In fact don't live in the same household.

The virus is everywhere and sticks to the petals of cherry blossoms. Tonight on NHK they will discuss "sakura variant" that just surprisely jumped from humans to sakura trees during the hanami season from people being outside taking way too many photos and embracing the changing of the seasons. Soon you will need to social distance with cherry blossoms. 6 feet.....um no...CDC just changed it to 3 feet.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Exactly. Pharma knows that and they want you to live in fear....em...."caution"

You make the same mistake, thinking that having a rational attitude that can easily reduce risk somehow means having an unhealthy life, this is false. And your exaggeration is just a strawman because you know you have no argument against the real measures that are recommended that are easy, simple and very effective.

The ones that live in fear are more the science deniers and antivaxxers that without even a single proof want everybody to eternally fear safe and effective vaccines because maybe in the future some nebulous problem may be found, and irrationally want everybody just to risk the actual dangers of the COVID infection.

A big hint of this attitude is that when confronted with the evidence that their irrational positions can be proved false with science antivaxxers will not defend their points, just copy-paste them again.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

You do realize that degrading peoples health by keeping them indoors is one of the best aids to help this virus, or is that new to you?

This is false.

And nobody is being forced to stay in. Rather, take precautions and maybe keep a distance and hold back on the picnics.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Toasted Heretic

You do realize that degrading peoples health by keeping them indoors is one of the best aids to help this virus, or is that new to you?

This is false.

This is not false. Staying indoors instead of getting movement, fresh air and sunshine is as unhealthy as you can get. And the less healthy you are, the more dangerous this (and other) virus is to you.

Say again you disagree??
