Santas distribute gifts in Tohoku

Families in the Tohoku disaster zone have been getting some Christmas cheer from 100 Santas since Friday.

The 100 Santas -- both men and women -- answered an ad online and came from all over Japan, Sankei Shimbun reported. They arrived in Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture, on Friday, and will continue to distribute gifts to children in evacuee shelters and temporary housing in Iwate, Miyaghi and Fukushima on Saturday and Sunday.

The Santas plan to distribute over 20,000 presents in the region.

Why on Earth shouldn't they be Santas?

For these kids, Santa symbolizes happiness and free giving.

In any case, the image of Santa has much more to do with Coca Cola than religion.

At this time of year, I think it's a great idea.

Bless them boys and girls! What a wonderful gesture by the volunteers, thank-you ladies and gents for bringing joy to our mob in Tohoku .

One Santa came by hot air balloon. One little girl said she was surprised to see Santa come by balloon. I wonder if Santa told her the reindeer were sick, or if he fired them, or what...

It is easy to say that these are a bunch of Christians dressed up as Santas and they are ready to convert anybody and everybody, who knows, maybe they are but I am sure these kids up in TOHOKU could care less, and they need all the love, attention, santas they can get, if you have not lost your home, family members, jobs etc..like these people, then I think you really have no right to put down these santas and their help to the victims of March 11th, so MERRY CHRISTMAS!! Ho! Ho! Ho! Coca Cola?? I had some today, too cold for this season!

If you saw the complete and utter joy on the faces of the children you wouldn't ask that question. Or felt the raw emotion of the elderly lady as she struggled to convey her appreciations. Or accepted the hospitality of residents of the of the residents who insisted that the Santana come in for a hot coffee because it was a cold day.

You wouldn't need to ask that question. In fact I'm stunned how anyone could ask that.

Well done to all the volunteers.Any reason to do good and spread a little more happiness is all positive.Kids are just happy to get a present, and know that someone still cares.

Kids should be out of there!

They are being irradiated………

Evacuation is the present they all need.....

some people have too much emptiness to think of all the reasons to hate something. It's worse than radioactivity

Why not Santa he said. Santa is actually not much of a religious figure in reality so I think it's ok. It wouldn't make it any difference if Shinchan, Anpaman orKamen Rider visited them. Happy Holidays!

@MaboDofuIsSpicy... Santa or not Santa dressed doesn't matter. The important gesture there was the giving. I wonder why it seemed you hated Santa. There is nothing stupid with them in Santa's gears since for ages, Santa's image is connected with christmas and so with the christmas trees and the likes. You should be happy some 100 people giving presentos to earthquake/tsunami affected people. I am sure there are lots of kids who've enjoyed the presence of Santa dressed volunteers giving them gifts and joy, unlike you venting about Santa.

Good on them for bringing some happiness to people in difficult circumstances.
