i think no one can predict earthquake. by the time it hits its impossible to escape it. its a useless effort. but maybe they can confirm just how bad the situation is and then what? advise all japanese to move overseas?

Are they including radiation detectors? Even though that's not geology, it seems that they would want to know about that.

Perhaps they might find evidence of a nuke deep down in the trench. Don't laugh, it could be more plausable than you think.

A rare opportunity for the geologists. It still amazes me that it's no big deal to send a remote controlled submersible down more than 7,000 meters.

I think it will be interesting to see what happened. It will give some idea of what might happen if (when) another part of the fault fractures. If this had been a couple of hundred kilometers south the result could have been even worse.

i predict the results of the findings will be something such as "according to the findings, our robots did not hear any tremours, the seabed is settled to an extend that the probability of another earthquake is one in a million. This means there will definitely be no further earthquakes in the foreseeable future; people can go back to fukushima and all the nuclear plants can now be switched on".
