Remember - all is to be cleaned-up in time for the 2020 Olympics.

It is the first time that Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc (TEPCO) and the state-backed Nuclear Damage Compensation and Decommissioning Facilitation Corp, or NDF, have provided an estimate of annual costs for cleaning up the Fukushima Daiichi complex

This is because it is impossible to predict how much it will cost over 40 years. No mention of what they intend to do with the hundreds of thousands of tons of contaminated water stored around the plant either. Tell me again how nuclear power is cheap and safe. This report should be in the crime section.

No mention of what they intend to do with the hundreds of thousands of tons of contaminated water stored around the plant either.

"That's because they intend to release all of it into the ocean and though they say it will be perfectly "safe", most of us believe otherwise."

Part of the problem is the contractors they are using have Tepco over a barrel. It is such a specialized field that no-one else will do the work, so Tepco will always shell out, paying top dollar for everything. Much of what they have to do there is experimental too. Not much room to even consider reducing unnecessary expense. The ice wall comes to mind.

When they it’s an estimate, try thinking 3x. Also, most reactors are past their 30 year limit, extended by abe to 40+years, so they will need to be decommissioned. I would not like to have tax paying children in future japan.

B-b-b-b-b-b-b-but I thought all the nuclear power shills said it was cheap, safe, and environmentally friendly!

Could someone please check my calculations ?

It doesn't sound right to me.

Y220 bil annually

= approx 600,000,000 Y per day ! (600 million)

= approx 25,000,000 Y per hour ! (25 million)

5-8 layers of employment agencies isolate TEPCO from the workers exposed to radiation and other hazards. Each takes a large cut, so that the budgeted 200,000 Yen per day that TEPCO pay ends up as 8-12,000/ day in the pockets of the workers, if they are lucky; minus food , board and other expenses.

The research costs are a gravy-train for Toshiba, Hitachi and the other members of the nuclear village, as they 'research' ways to decommission reactors safely, their new business.

Where is the money coming from to pay for all this then ? More digital money created with a keystroke ? Lots of smoke and mirrors here folks

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yep, keep on privatizing profits and socializing losses Tepco

@RedMango

I had to check the figures myself because they seem so insane, but you're spot on.

$5.6 million dollars per day it's costing. That's a spanking new Lamborghini every hour. I'm in the wrong business.

Lord help us if the Nankai Trough throws a wobbly in the next decade, the country will be finished.

And the whole bill should be paid by TEPCO for the lack of fore-sight by putting all the back up generators in the same room.

Sigh...

So, there seems to be quite a brains trust here, How far "downwind" would be considered safe for surfers to not notice any adverse long term health issues?

You know, it would be a hell of a lot cheaper if they didn't pay 10 layers on different contractors and subcontractors, and just organised to do it from one company.

The billions and trillions, who is able to judge size any more.

( flow into the Pacific Ocean from the crippled No. 1 plant at a rate of around 2 billion becquerels a day, a study has found. The amount of leaking cesium 137 has decreased from some 30 billion becquerels in 2013,) The other JT reporting.

Anyone can explain how many of the 40s-50s bombs that adds up to?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Tepco will be nationalized and we tax payers will foot the bill.

@spoony - You know, it would be a hell of a lot cheaper if they didn't pay 10 layers on different contractors and subcontractors, and just organised to do it from one company.

Then TEPCO would be responsible for the care and monitoring of these employees, some of whom are currently recruited through criminal organisations, and they do not want to do that. Using layers of employers gives them plausible denial.

The nuclear utilities in Japan have a long history of recruiting reactor and power plant cleaners and maintenance workers for the dirty, demanding and dangerous work from the disenfranchised underclasses; day workers from Sanyo, the unemployed and unemployable, as well as those who have to pay off debts. Just check out a UK documentary called Nuclear Ginza, from 1995, about the workers at the 14 or more KEPCO NPPs located around Wakasa Bay.

Want reads cheap chaep, long gone. Now clean clean, if you please

Japan's nuclear lobbyist group still repeat deception that "nuclear plants is reasonable".

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I’d argue that there aren’t any safe places to store nuclear waste in Japan.

And the UK now sources over 30% of its power from renewables and is improving every year.

The government here

has reduced the subsidies for solar power and it is no longer worth it to invest in that type of power for some investors.....

When finish this make Japan drowning in debt..
