This is because it is impossible to predict how much it will cost over 40 years. No mention of what they intend to do with the hundreds of thousands of tons of contaminated water stored around the plant either. Tell me again how nuclear power is cheap and safe. Part of the problem is the contractors they are using have Tepco over a barrel. It is such a specialized field that no-one else will do the work, so Tepco will always shell out, paying top dollar for everything. Much of what they have to do there is experimental too. Not much room to even consider reducing unnecessary expense. The ice wall comes to mind.

When they it’s an estimate, try thinking 3x. Also, most reactors are past their 30 year limit, extended by abe to 40+years, so they will need to be decommissioned. I would not like to have tax paying children in future japan.

= approx 600,000,000 Y per day ! (600 million)

= approx 25,000,000 Y per hour ! (25 million)

5-8 layers of employment agencies isolate TEPCO from the workers exposed to radiation and other hazards. Each takes a large cut, so that the budgeted 200,000 Yen per day that TEPCO pay ends up as 8-12,000/ day in the pockets of the workers, if they are lucky; minus food , board and other expenses.

The research costs are a gravy-train for Toshiba, Hitachi and the other members of the nuclear village, as they 'research' ways to decommission reactors safely, their new business.

Where is the money coming from to pay for all this then ? More digital money created with a keystroke ? Lots of smoke and mirrors here folks

Then TEPCO would be responsible for the care and monitoring of these employees, some of whom are currently recruited through criminal organisations, and they do not want to do that. Using layers of employers gives them plausible denial.

The nuclear utilities in Japan have a long history of recruiting reactor and power plant cleaners and maintenance workers for the dirty, demanding and dangerous work from the disenfranchised underclasses; day workers from Sanyo, the unemployed and unemployable, as well as those who have to pay off debts. Just check out a UK documentary called Nuclear Ginza, from 1995, about the workers at the 14 or more KEPCO NPPs located around Wakasa Bay.
