A very sad event and God Bless all who serve. It just seems that there are more events like these than in the past. Is fatigue or more training a factor?

It is sad enough when we lose Marines in war time. We need to look into why these accidents are happening.

Thank You to all who serve to protect us and Thanks to our ally, Japan, who responded so quickly.

Rough day, hopefully they can find these Marines and bring them home.

I share your sentiments. Very classy post

We depend on these men for our nations security.

They died heroes for the USA and Japan. Respect and peace to their families and loved ones.

Did Trump not thank the Japanese SDF then?

Did Trump not thank the Japanese SDF then?

Of course he didn't...But this American will.

"The SDF sent 10 aircraft and the Japan Coast Guard dispatched six patrol ships"

Thank You to the SDF and Japan Coast Gaurd!!!!

In flight refueling sounds like a nightmare in normal daytime circumstances (despite those slick stock videos that get used by news shows). But doing it at 2 a.m. wearing night vision goggles? I think there is a biological impediment to what work people can push themselves to perform at irregular times of night.

The SDF should get thanks since they are doing much of the search work. Do the Marines have their own boats out scouring the ocean for wreckage?

Why would that be downvoted?

@Loki520, just going by this article, it's hard to gauge if the US Navy led the search and rescue effort. Japan's Coast Guard is the one doing routine ocean patrols off their own coast (in this case Shikoku/ Kochi), so logically they showed up first to start recovering survivors. I'd like to learn what kind of ships or planes have the best chance of locating underwater airplane wrecks though.

Strange that the article makes no mention at all of the American forces who are involved in the search, as if they were just sitting on their laurels depending on the Japanese forces.

So very sad indeed.

I am hoping and praying my brethren are recovered one way or the other.

@crazyjoe. We need to look into why these accidents are happening. Indeed, you are so right. There are many factors why this is happening I can only imagine. But I will be the first to admit. I am no expert and do not know why this happened and so sad it did. However, the F/A-18 or the Hornet is an ageing aircraft. It must be a struggle to keep these birds in the air. My biggest concern is the USMC and the contractors working on these aging aircraft have everything they need to fly them safety and adequately. Well I will keep the speculation at bay as it is not the time for that out of respect. Thank you and appreciation for the SDF the U.S. Navy, USMC, local police, local mariners and any other agency aiding in the search and recovery phase.

This was a sad and tragic accident. I am praying for these missing five Marines and their families.

Please God let them be recovered one way or the other.

@TorafusuTorasan

The Military prepare for all occasions, night ops do occur, and you need to be trained/practised in these situations.

Inflight refuelling is dangerous, and you can review a lot of u-tube material upon the matter. An interesting issue is the relative speeds of the planes concerned, Jets tend to become less stable at the lower speeds of propellor aircraft and when sitting behind them, even moreso. Goodness knows what the weather conditions were at the time, but I guess what happened was sadly an event of bad luck. The commanding officer who scheduled the exercise will have his decision reviewed, but without such activities, how can a Military force be prepared ?

I feel sorry for the Families involved - their Kin, died for their Country regardless beit in Combat or otherwise. That should not be discounted by anyone.
