Search resumes for missing 3-year-old boy in Fukui

About 100 police and firefighters resumed their search Monday morning for a three-year-old boy who has been missing in Echizen, Fukui Prefecture, since Saturday.

The boy, Ren Tanaka, is approximately 100 cm tall, of thin build, and was wearing a green hooded jumper at the time of his disappearance, Fuji TV reported.

Ren was last seen at around 2 p.m. on Saturday when his father, Ryoji, left him in the car in the parking lot of his office building. He was away from the car for about 10 minutes. When he came back, his son was gone.

Tanaka told police his son had been sitting in the front passenger seat with his seat belt fastened, but that he did not lock the car doors.

The area where the boy went missing is located near a river, and due to rain on Saturday, the water level had risen. Although nobody has reported seeing the boy and surrounding street security cameras show no footage of Ren’s whereabouts, he may have gotten out of the car and walked to the river where he fell in.

Police have also not ruled out the possibility that someone may have taken the boy from the car.

The guy has made a terrible mistake.

What you have to realize, is that JT posters are perfect parents, and never had to face any real-world issues that real-world parents have ever had to face. It's hard when you're posting how things work for everyone else in humanity other than JT posters, since you are trying to relate how the world works to a bunch of perfect individuals who have never screwed up.

You got a whole lot of Sympathy for the father, but what about Sympathy for the kid

What's wrong with having both?

9 ( +10 / -1 )

Stuff like this just makes me want to cry.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

whatever your thoughts on the father are...He must be in a world of pain right now. Pain only someone who has kids would truly know.

The what, if's and buts are swimming around his head right now.

Wouldn't wish this on anyone. We all make mistakes. This is his.

Cut the guy some slack guys.

I also hope this has a happy ending.

I can understand the father's state of mind. He wasn't off to play pachinko or go shopping - he was dashing to his office. Perhaps he was in a rush, and bringing his son would have eaten into the time. He certainly should have locked the car doors, but his actions in my view do not qualify as monstrous.

It is simply a tragedy. I pray the boy is safe.

That man must be in a terrible state, not knowing what's happened to his boy. He made a mistake, it wasn't malicious.

In my days as a child, in my country, leaving your kid in an unlocked car was commonplace. That was then, when it was believed to be safe. Japan sometimes reminds me of that life, a world and a lifetime away.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Why oh why would you leave a young child in a car with the doors unlocked, even for 10 minutes? I hope there is a good ending to this.

above

Like you have never done something and then regretted it after?

Must be great being so perfect.

Hope you never have to feel the pain this guy is in. Do you think he doesn't know??

Like I said...I hope you don't.

6 ( +12 / -6 )

Some serious issues you guys have!

The guy has made a terrible mistake. I'd bet if he was a friend of any of you here, you'd be on here defending him.

But No...just some guy you don't know and you want to vent your anger on him because your life sucks.

I'm not saying he shouldn't face the law if the worst comes to being. But sticking it into a guy you don't know on here!

How big of you.

6 ( +11 / -5 )

I worry more about my son now (He is 22 going on 13 :) than I ever did when he was a wee lad.

I swear that I would, in a heartbeat, take any punishment or jail time he was given if he ever stepped out of line...I would take any pain from him, in a heartbeat if he ever became sick. If I could, I would take all my good days and swap them for his bad days...in a heartbeat.

That's the love I have for my son.

And if I were ever to lose him...I think I would find it very difficult to find my way back.

Once again. I hope no foul play here. awaiting an update.

Another innocent victim of a bad parenting decision

5 ( +11 / -6 )

What parent in their right mind leaves a child alone for 10 minutes in a car ???

It happens all the time in Japan. Parents have just a short errand, the kid is sleeping, so they think it's ok.

I guess they have to learn the hard way.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

No smithinjapan.

What you fail to realize is that mistakes happen. Big and small. I’m sat here reading comments from folk who very clearly don’t understand the word and it’s various usage and degree of severity.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

I keep reading here on JT about how people in Japan leave their kids unattended in cars but I used to see this in the States, too. It's not an only in Japan phenomena.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

So sad...pray he is found alive, but it's not looking good.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Time to move on from the mistakes thing.

How about giving us your view on the matter and what we can learn and how it can be prevented in the future.

Without laying the boot in on some guy who has to live with his stupidity.

and yes. He was stupid. And I’m guessing he thinks so too.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Children should never be allowed in the front of cars. When I about 4 or 5 I was playing in the car, took it out of gear and rolled down the drive and crashed into a ditch. Got the wooden spoon big time. I hope he is OK, the child a month or two ago managed to survive a few days. Feel sorry for the mother, hope good ending.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

For the love of god! DON'T leave your kids alone, even if it's for a few minutes. I really hope they find the kid soon.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

How many unfortunate incidents does it take for parents to realize that children need to be strictly supervised at all times.

I highly doubt this guy even watches the news. If the boy can't say his own name yet, he shouldn't be left alone in a car, locked or unlocked. All you need is common sense to figure that out.

I have a little boy turning 3 soon, and want him with me all the time. Regardless of whether it was safe or not, I just wouldn't feel right leaving him alone.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Hope the boy is alive. Stranger Things have happened.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Well I certainly have suspicions about the father. No video around showing the boy. Hope the police check him out and don’t just believe his story

What parent in their right mind leaves a child alone for 10 minutes in a car ???

I hope I am wrong but if that many people looked for this child and didn’t find him he may have been washed away by the raising water.

How many unfortunate incidents does it take for parents to realize that children need to be strictly supervised at all times.

his father, Ryoji, left him in the car in the parking lot of his office building.

Time and time again! Don't leave your frigging alone kids in a car!

@maybeperhapssyes - Wouldn't wish this on anyone. We all make mistakes. This is his. Cut the guy some slack guys.

Mistakes? A mistake is putting on one gray sock and one black one. This is not a mistake! This is careless irresponsibility and has lead to the disappearance of his son. Leaving kids alone in a car is a very serious criminal offense in other countries. A car is for transport. It's not a mobile babysitter!

1 ( +7 / -6 )

As a father (how many on here are? I'm guessing the ones making the most noise aren't) I am just as angry about this as anyone on here. But I know how quick and tricky young kids can be!

My lad is 22 and still making some doozies.

It only takes one second for anything to go wrong...less than that.

Who here has super hero power that is quicker than the blink of an eye?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

As a parent I feel for the guy too. He will have no peace internally and not have a leg to stand on before his wife, the mother of his child. So sad for the little boy, and for the whole family.

And I bet it was not 'just 10 minutes', but longer, and he said that to try and cover for some of his guilt and shame...

Another kid lost like this in Japan turned up not two months ago. Praying for the best. Whatever the result, this will recur in his father's dreams.

maybeperhapsyes and Strangerland

Allow me to get your backs on this.

Let me share a story with you that happened to me this summer.

I took my wife and 2 year old son to visit and meet my family and relatives in Vancouver. Almost all my fam live there now.

The morning after we arrived, there was a carribean festival where we all went as a family. My wife and son were hungry, so we went to a stand to buy some food. I don't know how it happened, but it was literally 10 seconds when one of the booth people screamed at me that my boy was running away toward the street. The booth itself was located at the corner of the park and on the street corner.

My wife and I chased after him and found a lovely Angel with long blonde hair and lots of packages in her arms with a panic-stricken look on her face playing Goalie with my son who was trying to run into the street.

It only took a few seconds for him to dart away from us, but it could have ended with his death. We thanked her of course. I really wanted to hug her out of gratitude that she had literally literally saved my son's life. I will never forget her beautiful face as long as I live.

It really only takes a single mistake and we are all human.

Listen to the two posters I named above. There is nothing worse than the loss of a child. I do not want to single anyone out, but those of you who harp on the father, like maybeperhapsyes said, cut him some slack.

Yes- what he did was wrong and dumb. But even if his child is found safe, the days which he has had to spend in absolute hell (and trust me as a parent it is) not knowing where his child is is going to be more than enough as BOTH a punishment and a lessson in responsibility

1 ( +3 / -2 )

I hope the little guy is recovered. DO NOT LEAVE KIDS ALONE IN THE CAR EVER AT A YOUNG AGE. VERY VERY RISKY AND DUMB!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@maybeperhapsyes

I disagree to call that a "mistake" for the simple fact that this is a common thing here. In 8 years living in Japan, I saw parents leave their child in the car dozens of time.

People don't make a mistake, or forget about their child, they actually think it's ok.

This is not an isolated incident either. How many kids died because they were left in the car during a hot day while the parent went to play pachinko ?

I'm not a parent, nobody's perfect, and I can't imagine what the father is going through. But it still seems to me as obvious as "don't let kids run with scissors".

This could have been avoided very easily, and the solution was still as simple as taking his child in his arms.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

You'd have expected that the Police would have looked for fingerprints upon the car door handles.. right ? (Though the Suspect could have been wearing gloves). And, I would imagine that they have also considered the Father as a Suspect and... discounted it.

Office Building Car parking lot - should be pretty empty, not exactly the place where a Kid Snatcher would expect to find a Kid. So, the wandering off theory looks plausible. But to where ? Where would a 3 year old Kid go if left alone. Hopefully, not the River.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I hope there was no foul play here, unfortunately more than not that's the way it turns out.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

As a father (how many on here are? I'm guessing the ones making the most noise aren't)

Exactly

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

"Cut the guy some slack guys"? We are talking about the life of an innocent child, not a broken coffee mug. Should we ask the little boy to cut his dad some slack? "Sorry you were washed away and drowned, or maybe kidnapped and murdered, but cut your dad some slack, he was in a hurry"

-2 ( +6 / -8 )

Isn't Fukui a convenient and hence historically favourite location for NK abductions? Just saying ...

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

@maybeperhapsyes - whatever your thoughts on the father are...He must be in a world of pain right now.

Yeah, he's feeling pain now. The pain of guilt for being an irresponsible father!

-3 ( +6 / -9 )

With all these tests for school and work in Japan, you'd think they would also have tests to become a parent. I'm sure at least half the population would fail. Have they ruled out foul play by the father?

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

@maybe - my life is just fine thank you. You got a whole lot of Sympathy for the father, but what about Sympathy for the kid whose father's stupid decision ended him.
