Seasonal operators such as ryokans, hotels, minshuku, travel and leisure companies, boating and diving operators, restaurants, souvenirs shops, anything to do with sightseeing, and their related businesses and suppliers will also take a big hit, and their loss of income is probably even harder to prove. They rely on the 'big three' holidays to see them through the year - Golden Week, O-Bon, and New Year, and possibly Silver Week. Who will assist or compensate them?

People travelling in Golden week especially from the big cities will spread the disease even further and deeper into every corner of the rest of the country. Failure of the government to at least recommend, if not enforce, no travel in Golden Week at this time will compound a bad situation immeasurably! It is beyond comprehension that they seem happy for this to happen. Where I am the majority of cases are tracked back to people who visited Tokyo or Osaka areas. Just imagine what an influx of people from those places will do to very town, village and city in Japan!

How about sliding gw to fall?

Give the tourism industry and people a pick upon

So - Some proof that warnings are being adhered too - and instead of applauding it, the normal suspects just make fun of it. If the numbers had been good I wonder what your reactions would have been. Over to you smith.

Do the hustle

It’s interesting how my previous comment of banning domestic travel received such a negative response. All non-essential travel has been banned in Australia and is contributing to the decreasing numbers of new cases greatly.

That's most likely because you didn't qualify your original post with that very important phrase, "non-essential".

I dont see why Golden Week isnt just moved to the fall.

Just keep working right through Golden Week as nothing will be open and cant go anywhere anyway. So really no reason to stop working now. Just have holidays in the fall once everything calms down.

Anyone from abe's cabinet going on a survey junket? Oh, I know, Akie wants to go to a women's conference on COVID 19 in the resorts of the south of France.

Good job those who still booked are totally immune to COVID-19, and definitely wont be taking it back to their rural hometowns.

Japan is extremely densely populated and any means to control the spread of the virus must be taken. The ‘it won’t happen here’ attitude is going to be Japan’s downfall. People have got to stay at home or Japan will never get on top of this virus.

Seat reservations for JR trains in Golden Week holiday at record low

JR expect will record high for this year golden week?

JR shouldn't be worried government and BoJ will bailout this company if there would be any problems with a cash flow. Definitely there is no need to reduce amount of trains let them run half empty!

P.S Blacklabel it was 75% full and why YOU didn't stay at home?

@Satedays: Its typical Japan Today posters. When the news is good - it gets met with derision. When the bus or train is full, scathing comments get made - but THEY are also on the said train or bus (I'm looking at you smith). I for one - haven't been on public transport for well over a month now. Nothing wrong with a pushbike for a while.

The impoverished and fearful populace don’t want to risk taking that virus back to their hometowns ...

As low as it is, I'll bet it's still too high.

If this thing recedes enough or ends, maybe they can merge Golden Week and Silver Week to one long holiday.

That’s great, hopefully the numbers go down lower or they ban travel altogether.

While the rest of the world is worrying about losing people, J-Gov and Corp-Japan are worried about losing money.

And pass it on to their grandparents

Good to know. I'm hoping for some heap tickets and lots of empty seats.

The shinkansen should only be used for emergency personnel and passengers who are covid-19 negative if this is an emergency lockdown right?

Oh, you aren't going to wait until there are more covid-19 positive cases than there are negative in the population so you can make money are you?

Domestic travel should be banned.

My local bus was again 75% full. No one of the dozen people under 75 except me. But cancel Golden Week and close those pesky izakaya but only after 8.
