must be very few nagging women in Shiga

Dango bong,

“must be very few nagging women in Shiga”

On the contrary, it might be that there are more women “nagging” the men to cut out/down on the smoking and salt, and men who listen to them in Shiga.

“The smoking rate is low in Shiga, and local residents are known for taking less salt," a ministry official said.”

Like most things, it's quality, not quantity.

I'll take a (relatively...lol ) short healthy life. Than a long one dogged with aches and pains.

Healthy lifestyle is the key for both quality and quantity of life.

Japanese smoke more than westerners but live longer, I do not see the correlation between smoking and shorter life span

Good thing you're not a scientist then!

@Dango bong, come on mate, you know that makes no sense!

It is not like there is only one factor involved. Maybe due to other lifestyle factors, including diet and exercise, Japanese people are destined to live much longer and then the smoking reduces that difference but not enough to overturn it completely?

If more people in Japan quit, maybe the lifespan gap would be even larger?

Why would you just rule that out as a possibility and declare there is no link?

(P.S. disgusting habit, especially in restaurants where it shows a complete lack of manners)

I do not see the correlation between smoking and shorter life span, studies in the US have shown that smokers die around 12yrs younger than non-smokers. smokers life expectancy in the US is around 67yrs, so basically you've got a couple years after retirement before you kick the bucket.

I don't think he does know that.

Okinawa no longer have the longest life expectancy in Japan?  No doubt as a result of bad American fast food influence and U.S. military presence negatively stressing Okinawa life.  No wonder Onaga wants the U.S. out of Okinawa.
