Proof that Japanese people were adhering to shelter in place and social distancing rules, good for them

This past Golden Week was a pleasure to travel in. I took three Shinkansen train rides and each one had probably less than fifty passengers total. I wish it was like this all the time!

@No Business: So short sighted - like those who wish for the airline industry to implode over years of alleged 'overcharging'. Yes - we like it when its quiet, and it is quiet for the right reasons now. If it stays like this though you realize that services will diminish and fares will rocket.

I am all for the current status quo and its good to see that numbers for travel over GW were this much down - but its not something we wish wish for in the future.

To be expected. The Bullet trains should’ve been shut down for GW anyway and compensated

@Expat

the new normal can't be the same as the old normal

I'm not going to allow fear mongers and sensationalist journalists create a "new normal" for me. What about restaurants, for example? Do you think a ramen shop that had ten tables to suit 20 customers is going to make it with only 5 tables because of some stupid "social distancing" rule? Of course they can't. Think of the repercussions just for the restaurant industry!

This whole corona virus thing has been hyped way out of proportion.

Killing an economy and causing loss of work, homelessness, physical abuse, depression and suicide over a disease with a mortality rate no bigger than the seasonal flu is absolutely unacceptable.

a disease with a mortality rate no bigger than the seasonal flu

How many times does this ignorant nonsense have to be corrected? Covid 19 is deadlier than flu, check the monthly death figures in the many affected countries and compare to previous averages. Furthermore, does the flu necessitate temporary hospitals, ICU units and morgues being built? No.

You bet your butt they're going to change if people change their attitudes about social distancing. What's a restaurant with 20 seats when nobody wants to sit close to eat other? Great that you don't mind sitting in a crowd but after this Coronavirus you bet some people will have a difference of mind on how they want to eat at restaurants.

yeah yeah they said nothing will ever be the same when AIDS and SARS hit and yet everything went back to normal.

Lets all look to the USA virus strategy failure where nothing was done for months and nail shops are now allowed to open. It is so stupid to put a public health crisis as opposed to economics. 3000 people dying a day in the USA, which will happen in June, affects the economy and how people behave. It is a false dichotomy and a stupid one as well.

Let not look to the USA, considering this is an article about shinkansen usage in Japan during the past Golden Week.

Lets all look to the USA

yeah yeah they said nothing will ever be the same when AIDS

People became more conscious about using condoms

SARS hit and yet everything went back to normal.

Like SARS, Covid-19 will be back to normal too once people don't unnecessarily die anymore

But until then, it's not back to normal

Probably when there's a vaccine
