Outside of Shonan and a few beaches in Chiba, most beaches in Japan don't have any lifeguards.

I'm assuming they're taking them off duty because they don't want to force lifeguards to put themselves at risk of getting Covid19 during rescues especially if mouth-to-mouth is required.

don't see the connection between umi-no-ie and the lifeguard/first aid facilities, the first are business, the others public services, aren't they?. in any case, if Shōnan is like it is here in Onjuku, there are only lifeguards on duty for 6 weeks, and from 9 till 5, and mostly they're just hanging together and paying not much attention to the ocean. all pretty chūtohannpa, half-measures.

Can somebody clarify? Does Beach closure mean that people can't go there at all, or does it just mean there won't be temporary beach bars there this summer?

You can still use the beach - just means no change rooms, or bars.

No lifeguards? There's a word in the dictionary for this: Illogical. Never thought the government dealt with logic anyway so...

Trying to think positive here but in their place there needs to be a warning posted along the lines of "GO IN THE WATER WITH YOUR KIDS". There should be one of them on beaches with lifeguards anyway.

I'm on the Japan Sea side, but I've seen many parents turn up at the beach who remain fully dressed and clearly have no intention of going in themselves. Some of them just sit in shade tents, so they can't even see what is happening in the water. I guess there is a big crossover with parents who think hoikuens are there to tire their kids out so they don't have to deal with them.

I was under the impression that the whole beach hut thing was a Yakuza business, so no loss if they are closed.

How many times must we keep up with this panic.

There are thousands of beaches around the world with no lifeguards and yet people still go swim there all the time, don't be a crappy swimmer and have some common sense. Personal responsibility is a real thing in most of the world, so time to learn it here too.

Actually it'll be nice this summer with no lifeguards around, clearing the water to do their hourly checks, making everyone get out for 5 minutes at 5pm to absolve themselves of liability.... all the usual bulls***t we have to endure to go to the beach in Japan... oh, maybe no rent-a-cops at Zushi to tell us no beer on the beach... actually this may be a good thing overall.

If idiots are willing to risk their own lives to.swim.when their are signs posted that there are no lifeguards, then why is that the government's problem? So it's the government's job now to protect idiots from acting like...idiots? How about some personal responsibility here? Japan is already a nanny state. Should it be even more of one?

The beaches will not be off limits to visitors

Lived and worked in Japan off and on since 1981. Wife and children are Japanese. My comment about the surfers was that the waves were miniscule compared to real surfing waves in other parts of the world.

In the summer, I enjoy going to the beach for frosty mugs of nama biru, views of Mt Fuji, and watching the local fauna.

And is it a sure thing already?

“People won’t be getting the virus in the summer but they will be getting heatstroke!”

Mask-induced no doubt

"There are no waves so what is going on with surfing here. Lived in Norcal where we get 30 foot waves. This is a joke when it comes to surfing on 2 foot waves."

Yeah you're right. How dare young people have fun in Japan..........

Only Covid-19 deaths matter. If you drown at the beach, you can count yourself lucky that you weren't down for 2 weeks with Covid-19.

More logic, no life guards means the beaches will be safer in the foolish minds of the idiots who make stupid decisions in these local municipalities , makes perfect sense doesnt it !!

Some how i often wonder how did these morons even get be wearing shoes, I mean come on, who ties their laces for them ?

Really smart...not! No lifeguards? That will last until someone drowns or is seriously injured!

Oh, that photo! No surf and hundreds will owing around in the mush. That’s not surfing. It’s just showboating.

Let's see... a nation where in summer you have a daily report of water-related deaths every single one preventable), reports of what may be a record hot summer (and with people insisting on masks, record high heatstroke deaths), the first wave of a pandemic not passed in a nation that doesn't test, and mere lip-service social distancing, and now they want to remove life-guards to boot. Nah, I don't see any potential problems at all, but we will get a lot of "Who could have known?" excuses.

Hasn’t the SOE been lifted?

Having no supervision at beaches will mean more drownings, particularly of the young.

It is a nonsense decision!
