No emergency healthcare assistant and no toilet?

Will passengers get some free extra lunch or dinner?

It is exactly this type of thinking and entitlement that's ruining the world. Accidents happen. Sometimes, we as people, just need to accept that certain situations are out of human control and accept the consequences. Everyone knows that there are risks to be expected when flying; the same as checking into a hotel, going to a restaurant, even going to a movie theater. You can't prepare for everything, so, NO, you don't get a free lunch or dinner every time, however, you can be thankful you survived(if you or any of your loved ones were on that plane and if so, thank goodness the pilot held himself together long enough to land the plane safely). We could have been reading about 41 DEAD passengers, instead.

Without doing potty you can't accomplish anything in this world.

According to the flight data, they got about as far as southern Kyushu. Probably enough time for a dodgy dinner to percolate. Best to turn around if they're close enough to home base to avoid putting too much load on the other pilot in case some other emergency happens.

Here's the trace.

What, you think there's only one pilot on commercial flights? Staggering.

better be safe than sorry.

right move.

hope guy will get well and its not related to some more obvious reason.....

@Reckless: There was 2 pilots. It's not a long enough flight to need 3 these days.

How about the assistant pilot?

If they were already over western Japan, I'm surprised they didn't land at Fukuoka or Naha.

It would been have been a 787 on what is a relatively short route (7 hours) so, just the pilot and co-pilot. You don't fly a plane with one healthy pilot unless there is NO option If the flight was less than halfway, then it would return. Its none of our business what was wrong with the pilot but its safe to assume it wasn't just a runny tummy to warrant a return to base. 7 hours is more than enough for an appendix to burst without therapeutic intervention just as an example.

What? Air Japan does not have a copilot in the cockpit? Let the captain go to the restroom. The copilot can fly and land the plane at its destination.

It happened to me once (as a passenger), a late 2 hours flight in Europe (after a 10 hours flight from Japan), after about one hour the plane turned back because the pilot became ill. Landing on a deserted airport in the middle of the night with a toddler, my parents waiting for us at another airport, it was a nightmare. But better safe than sorry

Wasn't this how the movie Airplane started?

Smart move, everything else can wait stomach pains get top priority.

Better safe than sorry and luckily, the plane was still in Japan. Get better soon.

This was absolutely the right call - it happens to everyone once in a while - and it's much better to be on the ground wishing you were flying than to be flying wishing you were on the ground.

Stomach problems?

Where’s the diagnosis?
