Skeletal remains found in apartment in Osaka Prefecture

The son of a condominium owner contacted police on Sunday after skeletal remains were discovered in a one-room apartment in Kadoma City.

The skeletonized body was found at around 1 p.m., Sankei Shimbun reported. Police said it appears that several years have passed since the individual died.

According to police reports, a man in his 70s had been living in the apartment. However, the tenant had fallen behind in his rent from April 2017 and had not been heard from in a long time.

The remains were found on a tatami mat in a Japanese-style room. The door was locked and there were no signs of the apartment having been ransacked.

No one bothered to check if a 70 year old is alright for several years!!?? Not relatives nor the apartment owner nor the social services, that's amazing!

Unpaid rent for almost 5 years? That's a weirdly understanding apartment owner. Surely he had a key to the room that he owned?

OK so many things wrong with this article and needing clarification, it is almost not worth printing.

Is it even possible to not pay rent since 2017?

After my divorce and my son was in hospital for months at a time I fell behind in my rent by 2 months on 2 occasions and got a legal notice to pay up, move out or eviction proceedings would start. ( I was able to pay) but no one waits nearly 5 years.

Something doesn't add up and proper reporting would investigate.

Eek, that sounds so sad

I recommend checking their alibis from 2017 in details.

"Where were you in 2017?"

"When exactly in 2017?"

"At the time your tenant died"

"But I don't know when he died"

"Ha - no alibi - you're under arrest!"

A mouse dies inside the wall and the smell is horrible for a few weeks. I should imagine a dead person would render the entire building putrid. These cases always puzzle me; how would people not have noticed/reported the smell?

Obviously the landlord did not employ a realtor to manage his tenants. They're quick to inform you if you fall behind in rent or any issues regarding your abode. Hard to believe five years of not getting rent money and not arousing curiosity.

What about the stench from the decomposing body?He must have been pretty isolated!

So much Love and compassion.

No one smelled anything, or thought it was peculiar that there was 50 kilograms of mail piled outside his apartment, or wondered why there were so many flies hanging out outside his door? Surely besides not paying rent, he hadn't paid NHK either! That alone would have those pests trying to find a way in to collect, even from a cadaver. There's more to this than meets the eye.

In westernized Japan after the war, old Japanese family system fell. Parents work hard and spend a lot of money to raise and send their children to colleges. Children get married and build their own houses in remote places and do not return to take care of their parents. When either of the parents die, he or she becomes helpless.

Skeletal ?

For the body to become skeletal in 4 years the mice and rats must have helped.

Hasn't paid rent in 4 years and nobody visited the tenant ?

Poor old guy.

Has anyone thought the reason being the family never called to collect the deceased man rent was perhaps he paid in advance, or perhaps he had automatic payments to the landlord. Perhaps up until recently when the son was called to check because perhaps the rent stopped this was the only reason to check why the rent stopped.

But still, ‘worth riches’ in ‘speculation’, *eh*? ***@Antiquesavings 7:02pm: ***

Both you & @SvenAsai 7:34pm have relevant points: “Something doesn't add up…

No mention of any family for the deceased so, perhaps someone in the know wanted any evidence of a possible crime 4-5 years ago to go stale. Or, ‘the kid’ was being set up as a ‘fall guy’. (Yes, reads like a ‘pulp novel’ but that’s the point of the comments section: speculation.

They surely quickly realized all those payments falling behind. Or do you know any Japanese or especially a landlord who doesn’t care at all about quickly incoming money? My guess is that they just have waited until the evidence from some violence or a killing has disappeared and now even let the public pay the cleaning , refurbishment and burying of the victim. I recommend checking their alibis from 2017 in details.

Odd way to start the story unless it’s relevant somehow?: “The son of a condominium contractor…” - Unless he was a ‘boy’ or minor, would assume he was also an ‘employee’ of the condominium contractor as well. (His relation to the owner is relevant how?)

Perhaps “Son, welcome to the family buisiness.” Your first job is to go and collect ‘past due rents? (Suspect someone higher up the managerial chain knew he may find some deplorable conditions (the tenant had last been heard from in 2017.)
