Snow cap seen on Mount Fuji for first time this season

17 Comments

A snow cap was seen on Mount Fuji on Thursday morning for the first time this season.

The snow cap was observed on the peak of 3,776-meter-high mountain 31 days later than last year, according to officials in Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture.

The Japan Meteorological Agency, which has an observatory about 40 kilometers away from the foot of Mount Fuji, reported flecks of snow on the summit three days ago on Oct 26, which was 23 days later than average. However, the snow flecks quickly disappeared after temperatures rose following the weekend typhoon.

Indeed, nice shot. Why does it make me feel this was taken at Kiyomizudera though?

Mt Fuji never gets boring. And I'm always surprised at the places you go when you suddenly see Mt Fuji looming large and looking so close.

Fuji-san is always beautiful. The photographer has got golden opportunity and he didn't miss that opportunity. The picture is really beautiful. I'll look Fuji-san from Kita-Toda Station every morning. I can see the Fuji-san when the weather is good. I hope to visit Fuji-san again when we come back to visit our family.

Absolutely stunning pic. Wish they could have gotten the top of the rod on the pagoda in the frame, but other than that...

@Bshabu (Today  07:09 pm JST)

Thanks for the info, but looking at Google Maps I couldn't find any tower, like the one in the photo's foreground, at Fuji Asama Shrine.

Could it be the Fuji Yoshida Chureito (忠霊塔 富士吉田) which is close to both Arakurayama Sengen Park (新倉山浅間公園) and Arakura Fuji Sengen Jinja (新倉富士浅間神社).

It's a little confusing, it seems that the name of the local god "Fuji Asama" (富士浅間) can also be read as "Fuji Sengen".

Nice photo anyway .....

WolfpackOct. 26  10:25 pm JST Now that the pleasantries are out of the way - anyone here up for turning this magnificent snapshot of nature into another tedious “end of the world “ debate on the ever nearing global warming catastrophe?

Snow at around the 10,000' level on a 12,000' + mountain near the end of October means nothing. There should be snow there already. The question is how much accumulation Fuji gets these days compared to 10 or 20 years ago? Kilimanjaro's once "permanent" ice cap has mostly melted away in the last 20 years.

Pretty.

Beautiful picture. Mt Fuji isn’t quite Mt Fuji without her white snow cap.
