The Japanese translation of a recent book by Glenn Greenwald covering his involvement in the events surrounding Edward Snowden’s release of thousands of classified U.S. government documents hit stores on Wednesday. As a result, an excerpt from the book was released to the Japanese media, whetting readers’ appetites by mentioning the role Japan played in his decision to turn himself into what some consider an enemy of his state.
On the surface, Japan’s role was fairly incidental. However, the slightly new info helped to reignite an older dispute over the nation’s lack of any sort of substantial anti-espionage laws.
In the book, Snowden tells Greenwald that he was stationed in Japan while working for a contractor of the National Security Agency of the U.S. from 2009 to 2011. Here he received intensive training to become a high level cyber-operative to steal information from civilians and other countries’ militaries.
It was in Japan that Snowden claims he witnessed real-time video of people who were about to be killed by drones. He later explains in the book that having to conceal matters such as this began to weigh on his conscience until he felt he could no longer keep it inside.
It’s hardly a mind-blowing revelation. Very soon after the leaks went public, fingers of the international community began to point at Japan for its involvement. Still, this got readers of the news again mulling over the old issue of the “Secret Protection Bill” which has been a point of contention among citizens for quite some time.
Proponents of anti-espionage laws say that Japan has become a “spy heaven” because there is no law issuing significant punishments for those found collecting data against other nations. Many commenters admit this is no surprise writing, “Japan is the perfect place for the U.S. to train spies. Nothing happens if you get caught here.”
Those opposed prefer the current state of transparency in government and claim that because of Article 9 of the Constitution, which declares Japan a pacifist country, there is no need for national secrets of any interest to spies.
On a lighter note, this news has also led to some playful xenophobia among netizens who wondered if other foreigners in Japan might be spies:
“Dave Spector [American TV personality and producer in Japan] is a CIA agent.”
“Bobby Ologun [Nigerian MMA fighter and often cutely befuddled TV personality] is also a spy.”
“Harry Potter… Yup.”
“There’s rumor that a the brother of a guy on the street selling accessories is in Mossad.”
“That’s right. I saw some foreigners riding bikes and talking about Jesus the other day. They had to have been spies in training.”
And amidst all this, the irony wasn’t lost on many readers that the land with the most legendary spies of all – ninja – had nothing in the way of a super secret intelligence agency any more.

The romours are all true! yep!
wtfjapan
comon we all know that most gajin in Japan are all spies, the laws in Japan protect them. Stealing Annime secrets from Japanese companies and selling them overseas is very profitable
nath
Bobby Ologun, helping to modernize Japanese stereotypes of black people, not.
Alex Einz
Spector... ffs really ?
Torontoman
Spector!! Why isn't this big news?
kyushubill
Spector??? Mino Monta on the hand has spy written all over him. He has those shifty eyes.
LFRAgain
bilderberg is right. Bobby Ologun has done absolutely no favors for black people and how they are perceived in Japan. Even more so than Bob Sapp (MMA fighter/entertainer/token scary black man) before him, Ologun devotes virtually all of his on-air time to perpetuating an unapologetic Japanese stereotype that black men are all large, stupid brutes, despite the fact he is a actually quite intelligent and proficient in Japanese.
Pretending to be something he is not? Isn't that the definition of a spy? (I'm kidding, of course, but I still don't like how he's built his career in Japan at the expense of other black people)

Enough is enough. It's bull-shit. How much Snowden and Greenwald make money from stealing secrete files from NSA? The thief is thief and never be hero in decent community.
Traitor is traitor. Snowden will be sorry for his naive decision to steal nation secrete files from NSA and handed to Russia. I hope he will be end up in Russia's prison in Siberia for life. Russia won't be let him go easily.
slumdog
This rumor is false. It is the guy on the street selling accessories that is in Mossad, not his brother.
Sidekick
I hope he will be end up in Russia's prison in Siberia.
Laughable. Thank God, Russia isn't a 50 plus whatever else state of the USA. I think he is working for Russian national secret service and writing books and articles about his previous work for NSA.
ReformedBasher
Met Spector once. Didn't seem like a friendly fellow, maybe I was wrong.
But he isn't a spy, as far as I know. It was a joke.
nath
Wow, wasn't aware Snowden was so fluent in Japanese.
I think to read into this story that Snowden was spying on Japanese is really stretching it. But what do I know.

@LFRAgain,
Bobby is just acting like the Japanese want him to act. I remember when he first came on the scene and was being managed by Sean. He played the buffoon role quite well, and Japanese loved it. He has since matured a bit, but I never understood why he naturalized. I sometimes wonder now if he regrets it. I see him on many shows, just as a sideshow.
kaimycahl
LMAFAO the only freaking spy was Snitch Snowden and once he is of no use to Trussia they will get rid of him like a wet piece of toilet paper going down a $hit drain. Now these IDIOTS Snowden and Greenwald is basically saying every foreigner in Japan is a spy, Greenwald and Snowden like every other person knows when they want to make money go to Japan he knows he needs money to survive in Trussia so just like any other foreign entertainer when they want to go on the road they take their act to Japan first. Why its and easy sell and Barnum and Bailey Circus is well and alive and Snowden and Greenwald just took the show to Japan to sell their BS
driftnet
You seem to be a mite confused as to who the thief. Snowden is no thief because you cannot steal from a thief what he has stolen from you.
Snowden is a hero because he exposed the thieves. But yes I know,. Modern people live in such comfort that they consider Robin Hood to be a two bit thief. But as soon as times get hard directly to the evil actions of our governments, all the sudden tunes will change.
nath
If that is so then he would be a traitor by definition and would be in contradiction of his own reasons for going public in the first place. I bet if he could do this all over again he would be back at his cozy little desk in Hawaii soaken-up the rays at the beach on his days off.
Sidekick
Now these IDIOTS Snowden and Greenwald...he needs money to survive in Trussia
By comparison to say, some average hillbilly, Snowden spells words correctly and without direct insults to anyone. Besides, an 'idiot' could not carry out lots of files with highly-classified information and deliver to Russia. If he works for Russian secret service now, he gets enough money to live in comfortable conditions.
If that is so then he would be a traitor by definition
For the US side only. The rest of the world considers him a hero. He disclosed to people of the world a true history of dirty operations of NSA. Spying for everyone in the world while covering arse by verbal bubbles of 'national security' isn't a good thing.
bass4funk
Exactly, the guys will always say, they are taking a paycheck, but the Japanese have absolutely NO respect for these guys, the things they make these Black guys do is so demeaning watching the people laugh at them as if they are total buffoons. They would never ask Tom Cruise, DiCaprio or other Whites to do these atrocious acts on TV and yes, Ologun does feed that stereotype that Blacks are scary, murderous, raping monsters. Because these TV execs and many here don't want to see or hear from intelligent Black men, that would be too boring. Funny thing is, if the Western media would portray Japanese in such a manner, there would be an outcry of racism. Bobby a spy? A spy for what? Snowden is a complete idiot, now for sure there is no doubt he is milking this to get a fat check.
LFRAgain
Enough is enough, indeed. The above statement is, ahem, "bull-shit." That so many here and around the world would condemn Snowden for revealing that the NSA WAS BREAKING THE LAW speaks volumes about the myopic, self-indulgent, selfish cesspool modern society has withered away to.
Contrary to the popular college frat-boy refrain that, "rules are meant to be broken," the truth of the matter is that rules matter. Rules convey consistency. Rules convey stability. Both consistency and stability are cornerstones of a healthy, functioning social and economic system. And few rules are more deserving of respect and adherent that those that protect the average citizen from privacy abuses at the hands of a larger authority or government.
You folks have pathetically short memories when it comes to the state of the world before things like civil rights, privacy laws, and the democratic process came into being. Or you just have never cracked open a history book. It really wasn't all that long ago that governments would throw a person in prison or worse for something so trivial as merely voicing an opinion. And we seem to be sliding inexorably back towards that same dark existence.
You toss around words like "democracy, " "privacy" and "right" with a casual indifference that scarcely conceals the actual ignorance inherent in the flag-waving "patriotism" (cough!) when Snowden becomes the topic of conversation.
You toss these words around in an attempt to appear enlightened to the listener, when in reality, you know of and care very little for the very underpinnings of these concepts, or the significant number of people who gave their lives just so you could stand there tapping away are you keyboards looking, well, stupid.
Idiots. One and all. Complete and utter idiots. You don't deserve the protections conferred by the variety of civil rights laws hammered out with blood, sweat, and tears by infinitely smarter people that you in nations across history and around the globe. You don't deserve the inherent security these laws bring to society by curbing governmental abuse of power. You don't deserve the social and economic stability that privacy laws promote. You don't deserve any of it.

: a person who is not loyal to his or her own country, friends, etc. : a person who betrays a country or group of people by helping or supporting an enemy
His nationality is still American and the fact the his passport was revoked and he has temporary asylum in Russia doesn't take away from the undeniable fact that if Mr. Snowden is providing information to foreign governments, while in Hong Kong, the Chinese and now Russian, it constitutes an act of treason!
The rest of the world may think he's a hero but he doesn't have a World citizenship, he's an American and subject to American law and you can agree or disagree but those are undeniable FACTS people. If A Japanese, Australian, Canadian or New Zealand citizen exposed government secrets to governments that could pose a threat you would call him a traitor. But when this is done in the US the person is a hero because the big bully deserves it attitude. Wise up people because what the NSA does is no different than the governments listed above and every other government and you are naive if you think otherwise. Snowden became a traitor the moment he handed over the data he had to China and every other government there after and should be tried for the crime of treason.

@LFRAgain-san, I've seen Bobby on a cooking show showing off amazing culinary skills, and Bob Sapp is discussed as a smart, savvy investor with more than $10 million in assets. So I don't agree with you that they are harming our impression of blacks.
LFRAgain
"Our" impression? Um, Pete, we aren't Japanese. :-)
I've seen Bobby display his culinary talents as well. Which makes it all the more frustrating. A random sampling of the general Japanese population about their impression of Bobby Ologun will most assuredly not result in, "Oh, yes. That fellow with the talent for cooking." What you'll usually get an impersonation of some variation of his exaggeratedly slow and silly signature self-intro, "Boku wa Bobby desu."
As for Bob Sapp's investment savvy, it's relatively common knowledge that one of the driving forces behind him coming to Japan after his NFL career imploded was that he was broke, having lost over US$800,000 in earnings to a . . . wait for it . . . investment swindle. Certainly, Mr. Sapp has learned a lot since 1998, and he's busted his butt to carve a niche for himself in the MMA world. But he's not known in Japan (or anywhere else, for that matter) for his investment acumen. He's best known as "The Beast."
kyushubill
All of you breaking Bobby's chops, have any of you ever watched Downtown's show "Lincoln". Matsumoto and Hamada and the rest do some really bizarre stuff and they are Japanese. I mean they do really over the top stuff that makes what Bobby does seem like a PhD dissertation.
With that, I had the pleasure to meet Bobby last year in Fukuoka. He is a very nice, warm, intelligent man who simply enjoys making people laugh. I hate to break bubbles but the Japanese folk I talk to see Bobby as a gentle giant and know he is acting. Believe it or not many Japanese people can distinguish TV fantasy from reality. They respect the fact Bobby is fluent in Japanese and even won the Kanji contest many times on a variety show beating native Japanese. They also respect the fact Bobby naturalized because they know the difficulty to do so and the hoops needed to jump through.
bass4funk
Have you seen bobby on tv? Your comment is ridiculous
No, you denying the obvious is, however. There are unfortunately many Japanese that are afraid of Blacks and have a negative impression about them compared to Whites, even though Japanese laugh at Bobby, ask many Japanese how they would feel if their kids would marry them and then let me know, I assure you many would be would not feel comfortable with it. I have heard many crazy and stupid stories of how many Blacks were treated. Just answer me this simple question. How many White models do you see on TV, print, commercials? How many Blacks do you see? Need I say more?
driftnet
Mr. Perfect, the day you have the U.S. government accusing you of treason even though its the government that is treasonous, is the day you flee and find refuge in the first country that will take you and do whatever is necessary to survive free.
Snowden's act of exposing the real traitors to the country is an act so patriotic, I give him a free pass to save his skin. Those criticizing him never stuck their own necks out so far for the United States of America. And to those who might cry "war duty", America has not needed any wars fought in a long, long time, so that plea is rejected.
Sidekick
Idiots. One and all. Complete and utter idiots. You don't deserve the protection conferred by variety of civil rights laws hammered down with blood, sweat and tears by infinitely smarter people that you in nations across history and around the globe.
How pathetic ! Just one question : who are you to judge people ?
bass4funk
How do you know who or which person "stuck out their neck?" If that were really true, then why didn't he lawyer up, give himself up and followed the proper channels of what a true whistler blower is, which he is actually NOT. He betrayed his country. Why didn't he go to a neutral country like Switzerland? Why China and Russia??? What on Earth would posses this idiot to go to our enemy? The is anything but a hero and not even close to it. The label TRAITOR would be more befitting to this pathetic tool. I just pray he stays in Russia and is NEVER allowed back into the U.S. good riddance!
nath

Driftnet, I served in the United States Army as an infantryman, 11C from 1988 through 1991 two years of which I was stationed at Fort Lee Barracks in Mainz, West Germany, during the Cold War and a half of that time patrolling the Fulda Gap, look it up. So I put in 4 years for my country, as a grunt and voluntarily I might add, so I think I'm somewhat entitled to my opinion. How about you Driftnet? How have you stuck your neck out and what gives you the right to belittle others you disagree with?
Sidekick
Why didn't he go to a neutral country like Switzerland ? Why China and Russia ? What on Earth would posess this idiot to go to our enemy ?
ROTFL. Were Snowden a real idiot, he would definitely choose Switzerland or other 'neutral' country, loyal to the USA.
nath
And if he were a hero he would have not fled his country and faced the accusations and argued his case and accepted the outcome, whatever that may be. If he were a hero he wouldn't have fled to countries that would do harm to his own country with the information he provides them such as China and Russia with a list far and wide between to escape the consequences of his so righteous actions. A hero would have have stood there and said, here I am and I will fight you to the bitter end.
Snowden is NO hero, he's simply a scumbag fugitive and will forever have to look over his shoulder for fear of being snatched and returned to America to face trial. But I prefer he stay on the run and he lives to be a 100 and continue to hide in darkness and in fear like the rat he is.
toshiko
Non fiction books have been selling more than fictions. He will earn plenty because some people buy his books.
