One of the few Japanese comedians who actually made me laugh. His High School English teacher sketch still makes me laugh. I love his sushi chef, as well. His Baka Daimyo, not so much. :-)

But still there is a huge photo of Takeshi Kitano in Shibuya even though he is also respectable.

Always liked Shimura Ken, his death last year was a big shock. Since JT didn't bother to post a photo of the statue I'm going to see it myself.

His skit on a high school English pronunciation class is a classic. Though a little too close to reality.

Definitely worth making a statue of this guy!

They should take Pan-kun to the statue and see if he does a backflip.

One of the greats!! Started watching him in the early 80s. RIP.

He was hilarious. RIP Ken.

He was one of the few watchable features of japanese tv.

A photo would have been helpful.....

Ken Shimura helped me get into Japanese culture and language. Was shocked when I heard he passed - I didn’t even know he had covid. Loved his Kato and Ken bit where he worked the overnight shift at a combini and kept moving the clock up so he could get more sleep.

Ken had previously been hospitalised for pneumonia in August 2016. At the time he was a heavy smoker who smoked three packets of cigarettes a day. Despite his appearance of energy, he was supposedly suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Comedy is completely subjective but in his young days he was absolutely hilarious. Age and decades of smoking simply left him extremely vulnerable to the pandemic.

His passing was a utterly shocking surprise and what should have been a ‘wake up call’ for Japan.

(btw: a photo of the statue with the article would have been nice.)

Rest In Peace Shimura Ken. You still can make us laugh.

R.I.P. Ken, thanks for all the laughs.
