Big quake but little shaking.

I'm in Ota-ku and I felt it. I think it lasted a bit longer than the usual little tremors.

Scary stuff.

breaking news at the end of the day?! Word knew much earlier than JT readers.

some14some: "breaking news at the end of the day?! Word knew much earlier than JT readers."

Very true... this was known more than 7 hours ago by the people who felt it and worried about subsequent tsunami, and there has been much more detailed news elsewhere, but hey... guess it's a Sunday.

It was one of the strongest weve had for a while here in Tokyo. Mum is visiting from home too, and it was her first experience of a quake - she dived under the dining table and I came in from the bathroom to find her perched under it, feet tucked up, peeping out like a roosting owl! Bless her, she did all the right things the internet says to do, but I just couldnt help laughing! Pah! Barely a shindo 3!

Yeah, it was a lengthy one, no-one here(western Tokyo) worried though besides the length.

BBC and CNN had it up even before the tsunami working was confirmed.

working = warning.

Miamum.

Hope your mum is fine. 1st quake can take you a bit.

"Residents in coastal areas were warned to evacuate"

There are still residents in coastal areas of Tohoku? I wouldn't be within 5 kilometers of the Tohoku coast after what happened March 11.

miamum: Good experience for mum, awful as earthquakes can be. I would NEVER say such a thing if it were worse, but I still remember my first earthquake and nearly every single one after and I think it's a good reminder in terms of humility. For those who come from nations where there are few to none, again, so long as it's not something devastating it's an interesting experience.

Horrible as it was, your mum won't forget it. There's nothing we can do when it comes to earthquakes... even being 'prepared' requires you to be exactly the right spot at the right time. They are about the scariest reminder that we are not in control that I can think of, but once in a while that reminder is needed. I hope your mom is not traumatized, and seeing you realized it was not 'such a big deal'.

I talked to my mum this morning right after it happened. She was trying to be nonchalant wondering if this will 'all be over' by her next visit. I tried to gently explain 'it will never be all over'. It's frightening for sure if you are not used to it, and sometimes very frightening even if you are.

Hope your mum is OK now, miamum!

My folks luckily are not too worried as much of central/southern europe also lies along fault-lines(hence the alps and our hot-springs) and we experienced a few big ones.

Miamum tell your mum we are there for her.

I'm hoping we're not seeing a pattern here. A few days ago, there was another huge one in New Zealand (luckily much less damaging), and we've had a couple of what would be (in a normal year) sizeable ones here. I can't help thinking back to February 22nd and March 9th.

I do hope I'm wrong.

People should be more concerned about the TEMPCO plants in fuk u shima instead. All the people I know are glued to the webcam on reactor 4.

Pretty lengthy shaking this morning. Felt it quite nicely at 12th floor. Very short but noticeable vertical P wave and then about a minute or two of rolling horizontal S wave....

@Tiger, that would on the reactor four building, housing the over filled storage pool with decades of rods that should have been off site and kept elsewhere, the storage pool that's just desperate to collapse, right? Yeah. I know what you mean.

Japanese officials predicted the quake could generate tsunami of up to 20 inches (50 centimeters), but the initial waves were only about 4 inches (10 centimeters).

Why is this reported in inches and miles then brackets in KM. Nothing to do with the USA so why report in their old out dated system.... Isnt the whole world metric now.. and what I dont understand is why is the US still on this old system.... Anyway back to the earthquake.. glad there was not much damage in Japan.... they don't need that now.....

I agree:

NZ Feb 22- 6.3 JP March 11- 9.0 (17 days)

then:

NZ Jun 13- 5.2 JP Jun 23- 6.7 ( 11 days)

Luckily, I didn't feel that quake here in Chiba (but I guess it was because I was outside). Was surprised to see the tsunami warning on NHK when I came back home. Feel bad for the Tohoku region.

I am searching for good surf in Florida right now. Sorry I missed the quaker.

From what I read, all ok.

Be careful, noticing patterns. I said the same thing a couple weeks ago. Some hoser jumped all over me for being correct. There is a connection between New Zealand and Japan. It's called the Ring of Fire.

You have be careful not to appear too smart here on JT. Some readers will disagree with you for it.

I AGREE WITH YOU!!! There is a pattern.

I agree with netninja and the others who say there is a pattern. It seems pretty obvious to me. I just hope they all quieten down soon.

How the hell did you all feel it in Tokyo? I am currently in Sendai and at best, some light shaking and swaying.

The people here are traumatized, though. Some ojiisans ran out immediately when the ground shook. Fiance dismissed it as a 4.8 or so until we saw CNN.com
