Strong quake rocks northeast Japan

The march 11 quake was magnitude 9.0+, if I remember correctly. Seismologists have warned that the aftershocks will continue for months, maybe even years after. This is probably not going to be the last, too.

I live in Tsukuba and I didn't sense it.

Nobody seems to be able to predict when a big quake will come. You just have to try and make sure that you are prepared. We in Tokyo were so lucky March the 11th. I now realise how lucky and blessed I am to have this life. Enjoy every day and....be prepared.

This time, it was good to see that the pre-earthquake warning system did work. But you really don't have much time.

I was in Yamagata - felt nothing.

I live in Tochigi, felt it but I was sleeping lol.. but it woke me up, that's for sure..

@ Nicky! I was in the house with my 3. It's an old wooden two story structure. Was the most terrifying thing I've ever experienced. An organ upstairs moved with the shaking into the middle of the room. Patio locks broke upstairs. Water even splashed out of the toilet. A real mess but myself and the kids were badly shaken and intact. Made me realize what is important in this life.

Are these still considered aftershocks from the March earthquake???

So things are still pretty bad there then? Kind of makes you wonder what TEPCO qualifies as 'normal'. Anyway, I feel sorry for the people of the area. I imagine they are more used to it than anyone on the planet could get with such things, but seriously.... they MUST sometimes wonder if the next one's the one.

I have my I Phone here in Tokyo, Kodaira with Yure Kuru, the software application set for 4 and above to go and and give me a 5 second warning if an earthquake is coming, my wife and kids felt nothing, but then again we were driving around Tokyo at this time but at least I could see the message that at 7 05 pm that we had had an earthquake but as I said, felt nothing and did not see anything damaged in the stores, nor back at my home but as smith says, yes, I am sure many people feeling quakes must wonder if this is another big one again like back in March 11th.

The worse thing about a quake, when it starts there's no way of knowing how strong it will nor how long it will last.

This is SO true. After 3/11, there were many rumours circulating around Tokyo that this was going to trigger "the big one", that it was going to happen within the next 3 months, etc etc. And every time one starts now you just wonder......

it doesnt help that this is how the 3/11 one was - it started kind of "normal" and then suddenly all hell broke loose. I wasnt home at the time but I cant imagine how it must have been up here - when I got home furniture had toppled, glass was smashed everywhere. We have felt some pretty strong ones here since and been at home, and they didnt even knock a candle over, so I cant even imagine what the 3/11 one would have been like had I been at home.

Im not a scientist either, but if you are saying that smaller earthquakes can be a predictor of big ones, then we are all pretty much screwed!

The March 9th one they consider a foreshock. Of course they only knew it was once the big one hit!

I got the yurekuru message on my phone last night saying a Shindo 6+ was about to happen in Fukushima so expected to feel something substantial in Tokyo, but only knew it had happened by the light swaying slightly. From the news footage it was a pretty minor shake even at the epicentre. The poster zichi seems to like any excuse to foretell doom and gloom though!

Yes Samantha, Nicky, Foxie and everybody, our lives are so important, all we can do is enjoy this life to the fullest, help those in need, because this time Tohoku got kicked in the head by the March 11th of 2011, and we never know if it will be us next here in Tokyo also getting kicked in the head, face, teeth sort of speak by good old Mother Nature, lets take the punches and roll with it like in judo, learn to live with Mother Nature, respect her, sure fear but not to let this fear control our lives, people all over the world live in worse conditions even without big earthquakes like Haiti, Iran, China etc..but they get up from the rubble and get back up on their feet, so must we here in Japan, with the stupid exception of that pesky nuclear power plant up in Fukushima, but we all must be stronger and learn from these experiences. IMHO.

I hope the earthquake this morning at 3:26am in Okinawa was not a foreshock. Strong but very brief.

March 9th earthquake wasn't that strong but it did shake my government building for 30 seconds.

I was on the 11th floor in my university in Tokyo - raised a few eyebrows there.
