Of COURSE! Because what better way to combat the virus under super-mega maximum highest alert than to ask people to travel together, dine together, and explore crowded places together?

Suga - time for you to Go To

24 ( +24 / -0 )

Go To Campaign have to continue because they already took the bribes.. i mean "donations" and "entertainment".

I mean the government can just ignore the taxpayers and voters, because they will vote the same people in no matter what happens, people from certain political families are simply deemed to have the "right" to rule.

Suga said in parliament Japan should be on "maximum alert."

Opinion of an expert:

Toshio Nakagawa, head of the Japan Medical Association (...) "It is no mistake that the scheme acted as a catalyst."

Suga:

*"We have been reviewing the program by listening to the opinions of experts and businesses involved. We will continue to operate it appropriately."*

What a circus!

Nothing to add.

Perfect, let’s keep this non sense go to campaign.

We are in the middle of a pandemic and this is a perfect recipe to spread the disease around the population.

Many westerners have the image of Japanese as the Vulcans in Star Trek, less emotional (in some senses true) and logical (false).

The Go To Covid campaign continues despite Japan being on Maximum Alert.

We will continue to operate it appropriately.

I wish the media in this country would call people out on such empty statements as this. What on earth does he mean? How can a tourism scheme be operated appropriately by the government in the middle of a health pandemic? Is the government tracking the health and movements of everyone ‘taking part’ in these schemes? Are they making sure that all travelers are not asymptomatic and not just ‘urging’ hotels to take temperatures on check in.

‘We will operate it appropriately’ is a ridiculous statement of nothingness.

we don't really give a toss about public health until our approval rating goes under 50%

Parties don't run Japan, political families do, as they run their regions for generations. You just need the correct heritage to win.

And approval rating doesn't matter in Japan, they can have 0% approval rating and still win the election in a landslide because a large swath of population simply believes that certain families are rightful rulers.

Japan politicians respond to donor companies/powerful families because they actually respond to government actions. They don't respond to the general population or taxpayers because no matter what the government do, the population have never punished them.

It doesn't matter what the experts say

This whole dining out and travel now a game of Russian roulette.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

A day after the country logged a new record of 2,385 daily coronavirus infections, Suga said in parliament Japan should be on "maximum alert."

But he suggested he has no plans to scrap the Go To Travel program, saying, "We have been reviewing the program by listening to the opinions of experts and businesses involved. We will continue to operate it appropriately."

Additional translation: This taxpayer funds to corporate wealth subsidy transfer called GoTo disguised as a economic stimulus in the pandemic has proven to be quite lucrative for connected companies and their political lackeys so it will continue despite the health danger to the populace.

I'm going to typos! Travel and dining out now are like Russian roulette.

Suga says Go To Travel will continue despite virus resurgence

A day after the country logged a new record of 2,385 daily coronavirus infections, Suga said in parliament Japan should be on "maximum alert. Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said Friday the government will continue its Go To Travel domestic tourism promotion campaign despite growing worries about a resurgence of the coronavirus in Japan.

Hey look, a contradiction. Those are pretty hard to find in Japan................(rolls eyes)

We have been reviewing the program by listening to the opinions of experts and businesses involved.

Great. So Suga asked businesses if they wanted to stay open?

How many of them said "NO! We want to close! We don't need money?"

Zero.

That's like asking a group of kids, do you want to have school's open? Or would you rather take a vacation?

How many kids are going to say they want to go to school?

Zero.

Great job Suga, as usual. You and Koike should go form a team and..............never mind.

What nanny state?

Japan government is actively trying to promote activities to spread the virus.

You have countries which are actively controlling the spread, countries which are doing nothing, then you have Japan which is actively promoting spread.

If they are doing nothing no one would be complaining. The national government is actively trying to increase the number of infections by encouraging and subsidizing mass gatherings, indoor activities, and any activities which would increase spread. Notice how the national government is still actively pushing for end of year parties.

Japan is on Maximum Alert. The Go to Travel Campaign will continue. So be on maxim alert while you travel.

The chances of dying are close to zero

That very much depends on your age.

I have real doubts that this program is in the best interests of public health.

It is possible to travel in Japan, and not contribute to the spread of the virus. Drive your own car. Thoroughly disinfect the room upon arrival. Eat in your room. Bathe in your room. Use stairs, or if on too high a floor, take elevators alone. Obviously, wear a mask, wash hands, use sanitizer that is usually placed at entrances, etc. But, that should go without saying.

OTOH, dining indoors in public restaurants, cafes, izikaya, etc is just plain stupid. I definitely think the Go To Eat campaign is far more dangerous than GTT. If they made it take-out or delivery only, it would make more sense.

First, it was "the Tokyo Olympics must go on", but Covid ultimately put the kibosh on that pipe dream. Now it's the economy über alles, innit?

Never mind the bollocks! It's not the economy, stupid! It's a pandemic and, as in time of war, the economy must bite the bullet especially when poor planning and mistakes in taking the necessary preventative measures have been egregious. Further policy errors will inevitably result in even greater economic losses and suffering. As the winter approaches the window to get things right is swiftly closing and failure will mean our only options to control the spread of infection then must run to the draconian.

Thank you Suga!

They are making the right decision here. I know that JT folks will oppose this opinion but that is OK.

Life goes on with this virus.

-7 ( +2 / -9 )

Awesome, I can't wait for my next trip under the campaign.

The chance of catching COVID is small if you take sensible precautions.

The chances of dying are close to zero.

Facts.
